New York Dolls 1 Oktober På Berns! 2006-08-24 15:33 CEST New York Dolls 1 oktober på Berns! I år överraskade bandet med att återförenas och ge ut nya skivan One Day It Will Please Us to Remember Even This (Roadrunner/BAM), och i somras gav bandet sin första svenska konsert på festivalen Peace & Love i Borlänge. Uppföljaren Too Much Too Soon som kom 1974 gick samma öde till mötes och Mercury avbröt samarbetet. Och One Day It Will Please Us to Remember Even This står sig väl i jämförelse med de äldre albumen, trots att alla år mellan dem. Alla ni som inte hade chansen att se bandet i Borlänge i somras, får nu chansen igen, när bandet gör en konsert i Stockholm! BILJETTINFORMATION 300kr + serviceavgift. Alt-Nation: Three Shows, One Night, Good Luck Low Fidelity – Ready to POP(s) One of my favorite new spots in the city is POP. POP is an “emporium of popular culture” that just has the feel of strolling in and out of decades. I guess one could call it a thrift/antique shop, but to me it’s just a place with a lot of awesome shit. In addition to the shop, POP has a separate room for a gallery/performance space to host events like Low Fidelity. Low Fidelity will have all kinds of cool stuff happening with an exhibition of the works of Bobby Grossman, Doom Destiny collaboration with Shepard Fairey, and a performance by Mr. Buster Poindexter himself – David Johansen. Johansen, who should be in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame for fronting the seminal and hugely influential New York Dolls, is a reason to go. Johansen will be accompanied by Rhode Island Hall of Famer Mark Cutler on guitar in what promises to be a special treat of an evening. Don’t miss out on the night that Low Fidelity POP-ed in Providence. Low Fidelity takes place at POP on 219 W Park St. in Providence on October 7. Advance tickets are recommended and can be purchased here: stores.emporiumofpopularculture.com/low-fidelity- performance-by-david-johansen-exhibition-by-bobby-grossman-doom-destiny-collaboration-with-shepard- fairey. • NY ACKER Awards Is Taken from an Archaic Dutch Word Meaning a Noticeable Movement in a Stream
1 THE NYC ACKER AWARDS CREATOR & PRODUCER CLAYTON PATTERSON This is our 6th successful year of the ACKER Awards. The meaning of ACKER in the NY ACKER Awards is taken from an archaic Dutch word meaning a noticeable movement in a stream. The stream is the mainstream and the noticeable movement is the avant grade. By documenting my community, on an almost daily base, I have come to understand that gentrification is much more than the changing face of real estate and forced population migrations. The influence of gen- trification can be seen in where we live and work, how we shop, bank, communicate, travel, law enforcement, doctor visits, etc. We will look back and realize that the impact of gentrification on our society is as powerful a force as the industrial revolution was. I witness the demise and obliteration of just about all of the recogniz- able parts of my community, including so much of our history. I be- lieve if we do not save our own history, then who will. The NY ACKERS are one part of a much larger vision and ambition. A vision and ambition that is not about me but it is about community. Our community. Our history. The history of the Individuals, the Outsid- ers, the Outlaws, the Misfits, the Radicals, the Visionaries, the Dream- ers, the contributors, those who provided spaces and venues which allowed creativity to flourish, wrote about, talked about, inspired, mentored the creative spirit, and those who gave much, but have not been, for whatever reason, recognized by the mainstream.

  • Long, Tall Stacia - the Six-Foot Lady with the Two-Way Sex Life Penthouse 1974
Long, Tall Stacia - The Six-Foot Lady with the Two-Way Sex Life Penthouse 1974 What makes Hawkwind concerts rather different from those offered by the current crop of rock bands is the fact that they possess a 42-28-39 asset called Stacia. At the magic moment when the music really starts getting under your skin, Stacia makes her entrance - dancing, miming and generally interpreting the sounds in her own, very unique fashion; usually wearing little but greasepaint. With the above-mentioned statistics and standing six feet tall, Stacia is an impressive lady: as she so rightly says, "If I could get my waist down to 18 I'd have the same shape as Sabrina." Though she is now an indispensable member of Hawkwind, her onstage gyrations started very informally. "I saw the band in Exeter," she recalls, "and got invited to a rehearsal. Then I went with them to a concert in Redruth. We were all bombed out of our heads and I asked if I could dance onstage. So we found some greasepaint, I made up and on I went." Stacia joined Hawkwind full time in 1971 but she insists that she has had no formal dance training. "I was kicked out of ballet school when I was 10 because I was too tall. Besides, if you enjoy expressing yourself, training schools can ruin whatever talent you may have." Her dancing used to be "strictly acid freak stuff" but now Stacia - no surname forthcoming, incidentally- is making it her business to establish a rapport with her audience.

  • Robert Quine Page 1 of 1 6/14/2004
Page 1 of 1 Robert Quine (Filed: 14/06/2004) Robert Quine, who has died aged 61, was acknowledged to be one of the most original and formidably talented guitarists in rock music; a founder member of American punk band The Voidoids, he later worked with Lou Reed, Tom Waits, Lloyd Cole and Brian Eno. At first glance, Bob Quine appeared an unlikely punk. A nephew of the philosopher W V Quine, he was a tax lawyer until his mid-thirties, by which time he was already nearly bald. Even at the height of his success, he took to the stage in a well-ironed shirt and black sports jacket, his only concession to attitude being the wearing of sunglasses. Equally out of keeping with punk's ethos was his command of his instrument, from which he produced an intense, aggressive, dissonant sound. Lou Reed acclaimed him as "a magnificent guitar player . an innovative tyro of the vintage beast". His skills are best preserved on Blank Generation, the album he recorded with Richard Hell in 1977. Having renounced the law, he was then working in a Greenwich Village bookshop with Hell and Tom Verlaine, both members of the proto-punk group Television. Hell, having fallen out with Verlaine and later with Johnny Thunders of The Heartbreakers, which he had gone on to join, put together a new band with Quine, Ivan Julian and Marc Bell (later of The Ramones) - The Voidoids. Quine coaxed suitably angry sounds from his Stratocaster to frame Hell's nihilistic yet purposeful lyrics, and the LP - especially its title track - became an underground success.

  • THE BIRTH of HARD ROCK 1964-9 Charles Shaar Murray Hard Rock
THE BIRTH OF HARD ROCK 1964-9 Charles Shaar Murray Hard rock was born in spaces too small to contain it, birthed and midwifed by youths simultaneously exhilarated by the prospect of emergent new freedoms and frustrated by the slow pace of their development, and delivered with equipment which had never been designed for the tasks to which it was now applied. Hard rock was the sound of systems under stress, of energies raging against confnement and constriction, of forces which could not be contained, merely harnessed. It was defned only in retrospect, because at the time of its inception it did not even recognise itself. The musicians who played the frst ‘hard rock’ and the audiences who crowded into the small clubs and ballrooms of early 1960s Britain to hear them, thought they were playing something else entirely. In other words, hard rock was – like rock and roll itself – a historical accident. It began as an earnest attempt by British kids in the 1960s, most of whom were born in the 1940s and raised and acculturated in the 1950s, to play American music, drawing on blues, soul, R&B, jazz and frst-generation rock, but forced to reinvent both the music, and its world, in their own image, resulting in something entirely new. However, hard rock was neither an only child, nor born fully formed. It shared its playpen, and many of its toys, with siblings (some named at the time and others only in retrospect) like R&B, psychedelia, progressive rock, art-rock and folk-rock, and it emerged only gradually from the intoxicating stew of myriad infuences that formed the musical equivalent of primordial soup in the uniquely turbulent years of the second (technicolour!) half of the 1960s.

  • Paula Guerra
Paula Guerra Lou Reed: rock and roll is so genial in its conception that some people would be willing to die for it (…). Music gives a pulse that allows you to dream. It’s an entire generation walking to the sound of a Fender bass. It’s necessary that people be willing to die for music, that is all. People die no matter what, so why not music? Die for it. Isn’t it pretty? To want to die for beauty? (McNeil & McCain, 2006: 45). The 1960’s, from an music aesthetic and expression point of view, were marked by an intense creativity that spread throughout all artistic and cultural mediums. We associate this era with a revolutionary mark, be in cultural, moral or social terms, with the importance of figures such as Rimbaud, north American black blues, rock pioneers, beat generation, Henry Miller, Malraux, Baudelaire, Marcuse, Indian gurus, Marx, Trotsky, Mao Tse Tung… (Paraire, 1992: 75-77). In the USA, rock acquired an institutionalization close to that of the traditional star system, with the role of the English pop movement, in particular that of the Beatles, one of the most remarkable in this respect. It will not, then, be out of place to consider that rock music throughout the -------- 1 This text was first published in Portuguese with the following reference: Guerra, P., 2010. • Glam Rock by Barney Hoskyns 1
Glam Rock By Barney Hoskyns There's a new sensation A fabulous creation, A danceable solution To teenage revolution Roxy Music, 1973 1: All the Young Dudes: Dawn of the Teenage Rampage Glamour – a word first used in the 18th Century as a Scottish term connoting "magic" or "enchantment" – has always been a part of pop music. With his mascara and gold suits, Elvis Presley was pure glam. So was Little Richard, with his pencil moustache and towering pompadour hairstyle. The Rolling Stones of the mid-to- late Sixties, swathed in scarves and furs, were unquestionably glam; the group even dressed in drag to push their 1966 single "Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow?" But it wasn't until 1971 that "glam" as a term became the buzzword for a new teenage subculture that was reacting to the messianic, we-can-change-the-world rhetoric of late Sixties rock. When T. Rex's Marc Bolan sprinkled glitter under his eyes for a TV taping of the group’s "Hot Love," it signaled a revolt into provocative style, an implicit rejection of the music to which stoned older siblings had swayed during the previous decade. "My brother’s back at home with his Beatles and his Stones," Mott the Hoople's Ian Hunter drawled on the anthemic David Bowie song "All the Young Dudes," "we never got it off on that revolution stuff..." As such, glam was a manifestation of pop's cyclical nature, its hedonism and surface show-business fizz offering a pointed contrast to the sometimes po-faced earnestness of the Woodstock era.
