Juli in Köln Brian Fallon, der alte Zimmermann aus New Jersey, hat in seinem Leben genug gesehen, um zu wissen, was er will: „Wir wollen nicht einfach nur eine Fußnote in der Musikgeschichte sein“, sagt der Sänger von The Gaslight Anthem. „We want to be The Ones, y’know?“ Das war vor zehn Jahren, als die Combo rund um Fallon gerade das bahnbrechende Album „The ‘59 Sound“ veröffentlicht hatte. • The Gaslight Anthem
The Gaslight Anthem The Gaslight Anthem. Kommen.

Roots Report: Take Me Out of the Ballgame Okee dokee folks … I am going to preface my column by stating that much to my father’s disappointment, I do not like baseball at all. Last week I received a mass e-mail that must have been sent to every musician in the state (they didn’t blind cc the e-mail) from the Pawtucket Red Sox. They asked performers to play before each one of their home games. Sounds like a good gig, doesn’t it? Well, it’s not. It pays peanuts. Actually, it doesn’t pay at all. They only offer a hot dog and general admission to the game that you perform for. You provide your own sound system and play for almost two hours. So, in essence, with set-up, you work about four hours for free, err … for a hot dog. In Motif‘s Oct ’14 issue, I wrote a bit about musicians performing for free. I guess the PawSox didn’t see that column. Before I go on, I have to admit that last year I agreed to go play this gig. Why, you may ask? As I mentioned before, my father is a HUGE baseball fan. He actually tried out for the Red Sox after he got out of the Air Force, but was told that he was too old. He ended up playing softball on Sundays for most of his life — until the artificial hip benched him! I wasn’t crazy about doing the gig. It was kind of sketchy, but they agreed to let me sing the National Anthem before the game.

I'd say thank you for reading, but really I say thank you for writing. In the end, I have just collected and saved what everybody else has to say about the Replacements. I started because I wanted to hear what everyone else had to say and what memories they had of that band that I loved, from everywhere. So for this 100th issue, I asked 1024 Replacements fans all the questions you´d ask if you met for ten minutes and talked about their favorite band. People who hear the Replacements and just hear the sound of a loose, raucous bar band don't get why this group and its songs are held in such reverence in such a unique way. No matter which album you listen to, there is the spirit, the great songs, the guitar anthems, the colorful personalities, the legend itself of the band that could simultaneously be brilliant and a shambles and whose songs could make you simultaneously laugh and cry. The Replacements are a great story in how they failed at whatever hopes for mainstream success they pursued in a self- sabotaging way, only to reunite two decades later for a little over 30 shows only to become larger than ever and finally achieve the national acclaim they never had.

St Vincent Puts Lupo’s In A Trance Photo Credit: Kendra Whitcomb On March 8, at Lupo’s Heartbreak Hotel, there was something incredible going on. Annie Clark, better known under the moniker St. Vincent, made her presence felt by bringing the noise and leaving everyone in awe. Jenny Hval opened the show with a memorable performance. It was the perfect way to close out the weekend with authority. With a lot of reverb and a trip-hop synth sound, Jenny Hval came on stage to open things up and got all sorts of weird. You had these solid beats setting a groovy tone, but her abstract style had the audience captivated. On stage was a screen that had images like a girl looking as if she was nearly kissing a coil, and there were performance artists — two ladies acting like they were put under a spell while Hval was performing. At one point there was even a dangling banana. It was unique to say the least, but the music was actually pretty rad and Hval has a beautiful voice that serves as an anchor for her craft. With the curtains closed and a robotic voice introducing the show, Clark and the rest of St. Vincent started it off with a noise pop number, “Bring Me Your Loves,” that had me hooked from the start. I was impressed by how much funk and groove they have. While performing “Cruel,” St. Vincent put on an amazing light show while getting crushingly electronic and groovy as hell. I’ll confess, it got me bobbing my head and shaking my hips a bit.
