Und mit dieser Aussage hat der Sänger von The Gaslight Anthem recht. Aufgenommen mit dem Producer-Superstar Butch Walker (Taylor Swift, Frank Turner, Keith Urban), geben astreine Hymnen oder auch treibende, ansteckende Songs die Richtung vor: Fallon vereint auf seinem Solo-Debüt ganz unterschiedliche US- Traditionen, wenn er Country und Folk mit der Energie von Hardcore und Punk kombiniert und selbst vor klassischem Rock & Roll nicht Halt macht. Mit dieser Platte unterstreicht er abermals, über was für ein unvergleichliches Gespür er als Songwriter und Geschichtenerzähler verfügt. In seinen Liedern verbindet er eindringliche Metaphern und präzises, packendes Storytelling mit eingängigen Melodien und einem emotionalen Tiefgang. Das Beste daran: Fallon musste auf niemand Rücksicht nehmen, konnte Musik und Texte alleine für sich schreiben und mit der Bassistin Catherine Popper (mit der auch bei Molly and the Zombies spielt), Alex Rosamilia von The Gaslight Anthem, dem Schlagzeuger Mark Stepro und Gitarrist (und wie erwähnt Produzent) Butch Walker einspielen. Im April war Brian Fallon schon mit seinen neuen Stücken bei uns, jetzt hat er den zweiten Teil der Tour zusammen mit seiner Band The Crowes im Spätherbst bestätigt. St Vincent Puts Lupo’s In A Trance Photo Credit: Kendra Whitcomb On March 8, at Lupo’s Heartbreak Hotel, there was something incredible going on. Annie Clark, better known under the moniker St. Vincent, made her presence felt by bringing the noise and leaving everyone in awe. Jenny Hval opened the show with a memorable performance. It was the perfect way to close out the weekend with authority. With a lot of reverb and a trip-hop synth sound, Jenny Hval came on stage to open things up and got all sorts of weird. You had these solid beats setting a groovy tone, but her abstract style had the audience captivated. On stage was a screen that had images like a girl looking as if she was nearly kissing a coil, and there were performance artists — two ladies acting like they were put under a spell while Hval was performing. At one point there was even a dangling banana. It was unique to say the least, but the music was actually pretty rad and Hval has a beautiful voice that serves as an anchor for her craft. With the curtains closed and a robotic voice introducing the show, Clark and the rest of St. Vincent started it off with a noise pop number, “Bring Me Your Loves,” that had me hooked from the start. I was impressed by how much funk and groove they have. While performing “Cruel,” St. Vincent put on an amazing light show while getting crushingly electronic and groovy as hell. I’ll confess, it got me bobbing my head and shaking my hips a bit.

The Gaslight Anthem Rock Lupo’s To Smithereens Photo credit: Sierra Sant’Anna It’s not every day you get to see a bunch of punks from New Jersey come to Lupo’s Heartbreak Hotel and rock the joint, but The Gaslight Anthem did that on Fri, Feb 27. They were joined on tour with fellow New Jersians The Scandals & Canadians Northcote to create a high-octane experience audiences wouldn’t soon forget. A packed house was kicking the weekend off right with a bunch of rock ‘n’ roll, and everyone was excited to see what would ensue. The Scandals have some local ties. Bassist Sean Patrick Carney is a Providence native, so you could have called this show his coming home party. Reminiscent of Hot Water Music & The Bouncing Souls, The Scandals exhibited a riff-heavy sound that set the night right. A blistering set included the songs “Losing Teeth”, “Lucky 7’s” and “Sold On Merit.” Northcote came up next, and they had an interesting mix of pop punk and alternative rock. They tried getting the crowd into it from the get-go, but you couldn’t really feel the energy flowing throughout the room despite their efforts. Northcote was okay, but they just seemed too generic for me to really enjoy them. I appreciated frontman Matt Goud’s heart-on-his-sleeve attitude throughout their set. Other than that, musically Northcote just seemed average when compared to everything else that was going on that night. A portion of the set had Goud performing a couple ballads solo on acoustic guitar, which I actually liked.

It began in 2014 with the release of Boxers, a fevered and smart rock ‘n’ roll record about the working class, produced by Kevin Salem. May 2017 will see the follow-through with Hustle Up Starlings, a heart-on-the-sleeve collection of silvery anthems that further illustrate Ryan’s reinvigorated love of language, noise and cinema. Produced by Brian Fallon from The Gaslight Anthem, Starlings shimmers with an immediate and captivating focus. The 10-song set clocks in at 40 minutes with no prevarication or bluster, just a celebratory noise alight with hearts and history, broken-in voices and poetry. Matthew Ryan grew up in Chester, Pennsylvania just south of Philly, and spent his teens in Newark, Delaware. In his early 20s, he moved to Nashville, where he was ﬁrst signed to A&M Records, releasing May Day (1997) and East Autumn Grin (2000) before falling prey to the titanic label mergers of the early aughts. What followed was more or less an album a year by any and all means possible until 2012’s In The Dusk of Everything. After moving to Western Pennsylvania in 2011, Ryan quietly decided that he’d had enough. Dusk would be his last album. “Music had become too lonely,” he said. But soon after that declaration, a sudden friendship with the frontman from The Gaslight Anthem, Brian Fallon, reignited something in Ryan.

Bereits im Vorfeld durften sich Fans über einige Kostproben freuen, nun folgt zum Titeltrack der Platte ein neues Video. Für einige The Gaslight Anthem-Fans war die Ankündigen einer Soloplatte von Brian Fallon sicherlich ein Trostpflaster, nachdem die Band bekanntgab, dass sie bis auf unbestimmte zeit pausieren werde. Mit ihren Alben „Handwritten“ und „Get Hurt“ eroberte die US-Band die Charts und hätte sicher an diese Erfolge angeknüpft, doch nun soll die Sache erst einmal ruhen. Der 35-jährige Frontmann Brian Fallon nutzte dagegen die Chance, um etwas ganz eigenes zu kreieren: "Ich bin überglücklich, diese Soloplatte machen zu können", so Fallon. The real protagonist of much of the stories was the collective subconscious of a country that was on a quest for a new identity. A sense of moral confusion permeated the sounds and the lyrics of the bands that harked back to the musical traditions of the USA. The moral center of mass had shifted, and it wasn't clear where. The languid alt-country of Washington's Canyon on their debut Canyon (2001) was emblematic of the existential lack of focus. New York's National (2) spun the allegorical tales of The National (2001) in a stately country-pop style. Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers (2003), a soap opera of ordinary misfits tinged with Lou Reed-ian expressionism and Leonard Cohen-ian existentialism, upped the ante, as did the atmospheric and solemn Boxer (2007). New York's Hold Steady, formed by Lifter Puller's vocalist Craig Finn and guitarist Tad Kubler, concocted an old-fashioned, infectious mix of hard- rock, roots-rock and power-pop, drenched in semi-biogaphical themes of ordinary blue-collar life, on Almost Killed Me (2004), Separation Sunday (2005), which is basically a rock opera, and Boys And Girls In America (2006), which contained epic tales of frustrated suburban kids anchored to solid hooks and riffs.
