This election clearly used religious and ethnic populism strategy that divided Jakarta citizens into two groups: A Muslim Governor’s supporters Vs. Incumbent`s supporters. The root of the Muslim governor’s supporters was the rejection of some Islamic organizations against the rise of Chinese-Christian Incumbent Governor – Basuki Tjahaja Purnama or “Ahok”. This sentiment found a momentum when Ahok was accused of blasphemy against Islam that provoked Muslims furious. Moreover, Anies Baswedan became a successful candidate utilizing the sentiments and used mosques to echo the resistance against non- muslim Governor candidate. Keywords: Blasphemy, Democracy, Jakarta Gubernatorial election, Populism Introduction "In the past, we pribumi (a term that Sandiaga Uno were the victories of the could be loosely defined as “native Native Muslims against others. Indonesians”) were oppressed and It also confirmed the strategy of defeated; now we are independent, now Baswedan during the Jakarta Governor is the time for us to be masters in our own Election campaign. In a video circulating country.” (Anies Baswedan, Governor of at an internal meeting of Baswedan Jakarta Inauguration`s Speech, 16 October supporters, Fatah as his Political 2017). -
The Islam Defence Action: a Challenge of Islamic Movement to Democratic Transition in the Post 2014 Indonesia
ISSN : 1411-0199 Wacana Vol. 20, No. 2 (2017) E-ISSN : 2338-1884 The Islam Defence Action: A Challenge of Islamic Movement to Democratic Transition in the Post 2014 Indonesia 1 2 3 4 Ari Ganjar Herdiansah *, Dian Arifiyati Putri , Latip Ashari , Rini Maduratmi 1234Department of Political Science, Padjadjaran University Abstract The Islam Defense Action in Jakarta during November to December 2016 was the largest protest movement that ever been held in Indonesia and brought national concerns over political instability. Hundred of thousands to millions of people overwhelmed the streets protesting the alleged blasphemy on Islam by Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, a candidate for the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election that has a close connection to President Joko Widodo. This article analyzes the outbreak of the protest movement as a depiction of the strategic influence of Islamic groups in the midst of political upheaval threat. The protest movement showed a struggle to defend their values, but on the other hand, its political impact cannot be disclaimed. Above all of the phenomena, Islam Defense Action implies that religious sentiment still interacts with the politics and challenging the role of Islamic civil society to democratic transition in the post-2014 Indonesia. Keywords: political Islam, civil society, democracy, protest action, political stability INTRODUCTION* Moon Party (Partai Bulan Bintang, PBB). Sandiaga Uno Di Partai Gerindra Dan Partai Keadilan Sejahtera (PKS) Dalam Pilgub DKI Jakarta Tahun 2017
Rekrutmen Politik dalam Proses Penentuan Keputusan Pencalonan Anis Baswedan – Sandiaga Uno di Partai Gerindra dan Partai Keadilan Sejahtera (PKS) dalam Pilgub DKI Jakarta Tahun 2017 Rofiqi Alumnus Pascasarjana Universitas Indonesia e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT This research is drawn upon Anies Baswedan candidacy for Jakarta gubernatorial election which was supported by Gerinda and PKS even though he was a Jokowi proponent back in the 2014 presidential election. Despite the contradiction, Anies Baswedan was still appointed in the Jakarta gubernatorial candidacy. This research will be focusing on how the process of political recruitment behind Anies Baswedan- Sandiaga Uno’s appointment was conducted. Using political recruitment theory by Rush and Althoff, and elite theory by Nazaruddin Syamsuddin and Mosca, this research argues that their candidacy was done enclosed. Which mean, they did not get to deal with an internal selection of Gerinda, nor the wide selection (pemira) by PKS. Therefore, this research suggests that the Anies-Sandi gubernatorial candidacy was arranged by the elite trio: Jusuf Kalla, Prabowo Subianto and Shohibul Iman. Keywords: Anies Baswedan, Sandiaga Uno, Political Elite, Jakarta Gubernatorial Election 2017.

Aristocratic Elections in Yogyakarta Bayu Dardias Canberra | April 19 2014 | 9:37 AM
Aristocratic elections in Yogyakarta Bayu Dardias Canberra | April 19 2014 | 9:37 AM If I had to select a single candidate out of 6,607 House of Representatives candidates and 945 Regional Representatives Council (DPD) candidates who had a 99.9 percent probability of being reelected, I would certainly choose Queen Hemas, a DPD candidate from Yogyakarta. The queen of Yogyakarta has, undoubtedly, dominated DPD elections since their inception in 2004. She then secured more than 800,000 votes, more than all three legislators’ votes combined. In 2009, she won by a landslide with more than 80 percent of the valid 940,000 votes. In 2014, she has set a target of winning the support of no less than 1 million out of the 1.7 million in the voters’ list. What explains this phenomenon? Does aristocratic status matter to voters? How well did aristocratic candidates do in the 2014 election? The recent election in Yogyakarta may shed some light on the aristocratic performance in politics. In many parts of Indonesia, the aristocracy has a special place in people’s hearts. Many local aristocrats have successfully transformed people’s cultural support into political support since the fall of Soeharto. In Gianyar regency, Bali, for instance, the election has always pitted two royal houses, Puri Gianyar and Puri Ubud. In Ternate, North Maluku, both the sultan and his queen, Rita Susanti, received significant votes for the House and DPD seats. This tendency has always been strongest in Yogyakarta, which received special status in 2012. Unlike any other provinces, the Yogyakarta governor and vice governor are privileged positions for two royal houses, the sultanate of Yogyakarta and the Pakualaman principality. -
