Signature: Date: 31st March 2019 iii ABSTRACT This thesis investigates the role of social media in political communication in Post- Suharto Indonesia. Focusing on the case of the rise and fall of the former Chinese Christian Governor of Jakarta, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (better known by his Hakka nickname, Ahok), this thesis examines how social media both enables a more diverse and democratic public sphere in Indonesia by making visible non-traditional or outsider politicians, and at the same time reinforces the discourse of the existing power elite. This thesis employs a mixed-method design of textual analysis of social media, participant observations of Ahok’s political campaigning strategies, and content analysis of newspaper articles about Ahok from three campaign periods in 2012, 2014 and 2017. Through this triangulation of methods, this thesis shows that political communication is shaped by intricate interactions between political institutions, media and citizens. Indeed, it is evident that even as social media played a role in Ahok’s rise to power by providing a forum for him to communicate directly to his constituents beyond the constraints of the daily media, it also facilitated the misrepresentation and amplified the spread of the allegations that led to his downfall and arrest for blasphemy. Thus it is evident that social media, in of itself, is insufficient to challenge the dominance of mass media in shaping political opinions, attitudes, and setting agendas, which are still predominantly controlled by the power elite. Moreover, while it is apparent from the rise of political outsiders in the United States and Britain that social media increases the plurality and diversity of the public sphere, the case of Ahok demonstrates that when the function of electoral democracy is distorted by political populism, social media can also contribute to the reproduction of the conditions that perpetuate inequality and dominance. iv TABLE OF CONTENTS Thesis Declaration .................................................................................................... ii Abstract It became popular amongst art students in Yogyakarta, and formed a significant style of painting which generally is characterised by the use of casual juxtapositions of disparate ideas and subjects resulting in absurd, startling, and sometimes disturbing images. Without a doubt, Jakarta has increasingly become the major core of the agglomeration processes transforming it and its satellite cities into a Mega Urban Region (MUR). This paper traces historically the interactions between migration, ethnicities and local politics in Jakarta from the 1960s to the 2000s focusing on the latest development, in which the phenomenon ‘Ahok’, the nickname of Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, a Chinese-Christian from the small district of Belitung, has become an increasingly popular Governor of Jakarta. The paper argues that through the recent developments in Jakarta the politics have apparently been transformed into more civic, rather than ethnic politics. The nature of Jakarta as a proliferating migrant city transcends narrow cultural identities as well as conventional party politics into a more active citizenry through the widespread use of social media. Keywords: migration, ethnicity, local politics, new media Introduction had already started in the 17th century. New media of the user generated content type is the media with content created by the users of the new media themselves. Youtube is a new type of media, although the interactions offered are not as busy as other social media, but the use of Youtube is quite effective to boost the popularity of political communicators. During the last few years in Indonesia, Youtube has also been widely used by political communicators to upload videos containing political statements or attitudes on actual issue. It is often that Youtube is also used as a medium for political communicators to clarify when they feel that they have been described negatively by the mainstream mass media. LA PORTA The startling about-face of Indonesia’s second largest political party, Golkar, which is also the legacy political movement of deposed President Suharto, to bolt from a coalition with the front-runner Joko Widodo, or “Jokowi,” to team up with the controversial retired general Prabowo Subianto, raises the possibility that the forthcoming July 9 presidential election will be more than a public crowning of the populist Jokowi. Alphonse F. La Porta, former Golkar, Indonesia’s second largest vote-getter in the April 9 parliamentary election, made President of the US-Indonesia its decision on May 19 based on the calculus by party leaders that Golkar’s role in Society, explains that “With government would better be served by joining with a strong figure like Prabowo rather more forthcoming support from than Widodo, who is a neophyte to leadership on the national level. ISSN 2335-6677 #24 2014 RESEARCHERS AT SINGAPORE’S INSTITUTE OF SOUTHEAST ASIAN STUDIES SHARE THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF CURRENT EVENTS Singapore | 17 Apr 2014 Unpacking the Results of the 2014 Indonesian Legislative Election By Alexander R. Arifianto* EXECUTIVE SUMMARY • The recently concluded 2014 legislative elections in Indonesia produced several unexpected results, as the heavily favored PDIP party failed to reach its electoral targets, despite the popularity of its presidential candi- date, Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo (Jokowi). • PDIP’s failure to win more popular votes during these elections can be attributed to the lack of campaign advertisements promoting Jokowi as its presidential candidate, local-level campaign dynamics, possible vote- buying, and the internal rivalry between supporters of Jokowi and support- ers of party-chairwoman Megawati Sukarnoputri. • The success of the Islamic parties in increasing their vote share dur- ing these elections is not the result of their increased popularity among Indonesian voters. Instead, it is the result of their strategy to recoup the votes they had lost during the 2009 elections. * Alexander R. Arifianto is ISEAS Visiting Fellow; e-mail: [email protected] INTRODUCTION The recently concluded legislative election in Indonesia produced several unexpect- ed results. The first one was the underperforming results of the opposition party the Indonesian Democratic Party Struggle (Partai Demokrasi Indonesia Perjuangan, PDIP), which failed to capitalise on the popularity of its presidential candidate Joko Widodo (popularly known as Jokowi). The party is estimated to have won only 19 percent of the popular vote, far below the expected 25 to 30 percent that had been predicted by a number of Indonesian public opinion surveys.
