Page 2 The Camel’s Calf : Publication of Hella Shrine, Dallas, Texas Just a little note from your Potentate....

Nobles and Ladies we have been busy in April but it was all fun and fellowship. Even though our picnic was cancelled due to the weather we had other things to do. Our Stated Meeting numbers are growing. It was good to see our members returning to Hella Shrine. We will be having a “Special Election” for Oriental Guide at our May Stated Meeting. Casey Bostain is stepping down as of 19 May 2021. Because of his growing work commitment and other things going on in his life, he as decided that he could not continue his Divan journey. Per Shrine Law we can have a “Special Election” as long as notification was given at least 7 days in advance. If you did not participate in our Potentate’s Golf Tournament you missed a great time. I want to thank the Ladies that volunteered at check in. And of course they stayed till the end when we gave out our “great” prizes. I want to say that Noble Lance Goff did another great job of running our tournament. He was able to get 64 players for this event. Thank you Noble High Priest and Prophet Steve Lang for assisting Lance. Everyone had a great time and said they would return. And a special thanks to past 1st Lady Diane Moore for putting the raffle prizes together for the tournament. As usual she did a great job which made us more money on the raffle than expected. Mark your calendars for a great time at Paragon Casino in April next year. As of today Our Chief Rabban Nick Fehrenbach has penciled this event in on the 23rd and 24th of April. Once again we will leave at 7:00 am on Sunday morning and return by 7:00 pm Monday evening. There were 27 of us that made the trip this year. We all had a blast. We had a lot of people returning for the jaunt and we had some that made the trip for the first time. Speaking of Casino Trips the Potentate’s trip this year is a trip to beautiful Las Vegas, NV. We will be staying at the Paris Hotel on the fabulous Las Vegas Strip form 9 August to 13 August. I know this will be a lot of fun. Please look at the flyer in this Camel’s Calf to get all the information and or talk to 1st Lady Dianne or myself. Nobles if you decide to make yourself available for the Divan line please think about this long and hard. It is a 5 year commitment for you and your Lady. Not to complete this commitment is detrimental to Hella Shrine. We need Leadership that we can count on. We know that sometimes things happen that prevents someone from finishing this commitment. That is just part of life. But realize this is not an easy task. The commitment gets more difficult as you progress up the line till you are Potentate. But we do have a lot of fun and you will end up with lot’s of memories. You are making a commitment to the Nobility of Hella Shrine that you want to be one of their Leaders. It takes 5 years of work to accomplish this. I hope everyone can be at Hella Shrine for our Ceremonial on 15th of May. We need all units and Shrine Clubs to set up tables for our New Nobles to visit. We start at 0800 for check in. Donuts and coffee will be provided. Plus after the 1st section we will have lunch followed by the Ceremony. After the Arch Ceremony we will have the Fezing Ceremony. Please come out and show your support for these New Nobles and their Ladies.

Fraternally, Mike Hall Potentate March Greetings from First Lady Dianne! Looks like the Great State of Texas is finally beginning to open up! There are no more masks man- dates in the State, but I know that most of us still wear one in public places out of respect for others. Hopefully as the year progresses, things will open up more and begin to return to normal. April was a semi-slow month for the Hella Divan! The Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 3rd, was well attended, though I have to say it was cold and windy up on the hill. However, the cold and wind didn’t seem to bother the kids who went after the hundreds of eggs…with gusto…that our wonderful Clowns and their wives filled and scattered. Glad I wasn’t a parent of one of those kids…imagine the sugar high after eating all that Easter candy! The Hella Stated Meeting on the 15th was an open meeting and many were in attendance. Our world famous Hella Clowns performed for all of us and, as usual, their performances were GREAT! Those guys sure know how to entertain…kiddos, old folks and all of those in between. Way to go guys! Our Spring Picnic Party scheduled for April 17th was canceled due to the uncertainty of the Texas weather. I don’t remember it raining as predicted, but it was definitely colder than usual for this time of year, so it was probably a good thing it was canceled. Hopefully it will be rescheduled for later in the summer when it is just a bit warmer. Lance Goff, along with Steve Lang, did a FANTASTIC job on the Potentate’s Golf Tournament on Saturday, April 24th, at Wood- bridge Golf Club. It was a perfect day for golfing, or so I’m told since I’m not a golfer…not too hot or too cold and the wind wasn’t too bad. However, it did rain the night before so it was cart path only…meaning those playing just got more exercise. LOL! All the golfers seemed to have a good time regardless. Diane Moore did an EXCELLENT job with the raffle, but then again, she always does and lots of money was raised.

Until next month, I hope all of you remain safe and, as always, I look forward to seeing each and every one of your smiling faces.

What a great time to be a Hella Shriner. We still have to be mindful of the pan- demic and use common sense, but with more people getting vaccinated, we are ap- proaching heard immunity. That means we can get back to the fun and fellowship that is the Shrine. We have a full form ceremonial coming up on May 15th with the Arch Ceremony! So, invite your friends and lodge brothers to join the Shrine and become a part of the fun and fellowship. Even if you can’t convince your friends to join, come to the ceremonial and welcome the new Nobles. We should have a relatively large class of candidates and we need to welcome them into our Temple. Also in May we have two parades at the end of the month. It’s time to dust off the go carts, polish the motorcycles and start having fun again entertaining the crowds at the Ennis Polka Fest Parade and the Deni- son Memorial Day Parade. Remember, we do not have Stated Meetings in the summer, so the May Stated Meeting will be the last tiled meeting until September. Come on out and find out what is going on around the Temple and learn about the activities we have planned for the summer. Speaking of fun activities for the summer, we have two Kids Fest in June. We are having two shows, one in Sherman on Friday, June 18th, and then in Texarkana on Saturday, June 19th. These shows are essen- tially a mini indoor circus without the animals. For more details on the acts, look for the flyer in this issue of the Camels Calf. This is also a great opportunity for the Nobles who live in Sherman and Texarkana areas to get active in Hella’s fundraising activities. Tickets to the shows are only $10.00 and all of the proceeds from ticket sales go to Hella. If you would like some tickets to sell to your friends, family, lodge brothers etc. just let me know and I will get them to you.

Nick Fehrenbach Chief Rabban

EXTRA - EXTRA - EXTRA - EXTRA A special election will be held for the position of “Oriental Guide” at the next Hella Temple Stated Meeting on May 20, 2021. In order to place your vote you will need to have your current Member dues card.

Page 4 The Camel’s Calf : Publication of Hella Shrine, Dallas, Texas High Priest and Prophet Nobles! I am SO excited to have to plan for TSA and Imperial! It’s so awesome for Dee and I to get to talk to our counterparts about what we’ll be doing at the two events! I hope you ALL can come to at least one, or both, of them! Hella will show out at both, just like we always do! On the “ front,” we have some great events coming up at Hella in the next few months. In May, we have the Bucket Drive the 7th and 8th. We can always use help collecting as well as helping at Hella. We have the Chili Cook-Off at the Directors Staff barn the 22nd and 23rd. Come down and support the event and maybe you can judge too! We FINNALY have some parades to go to! The Ennis parade is the 29th, and the Dennison parade is on the 31st! Come take part and promote Hella! Get with Marshall Everett Warner or Illustrious Sir Mike Hall if you want to participate. In June, we have TSA the 2nd thru the 5th in San Antonio. Come help show the Hella pride! The 101 Jalapeno Contest is on the 12th. That is ALWAYS a great time! Come enjoy some jalapeno appetizers, stuffed jalapenos, even jalapeno desserts! In July we will go to Houston for Imperial the 3rd thru the 8th. Along with the competitions, there will be a corn- hole tournament! Come take part and MAYBE get to play in the finals on the stage before a concert! I already have my partner! Get you one too and get registered! On the 31st, we’ll have the annual Hella Classic in Greenville. Come out and support this event and Hella! Ricky Randall does SO MUCH to make this event huge every year! Come out to these events and support Hella and support the Hospitals as well! We’ll be looking for you!

Yours in the Fraternity, Steve Lang

May 6, 2021 National Day of Prayer

In the early days of the colonies, times of prayer and fasting were set aside. In 1775, the Continental Congress asked the colonies to pray for wisdom in forming a nation. Since that time it has been as been part of America’s history. During the Korean War, Rever- end Billy Graham issued a challenge for a yearly, set-aside National Day of Prayer. He stated: “What a thrilling, glorious thing it would be to see the leaders of our country to- day kneeling before Almighty God in prayer. It wasn’t until April 17, 1952, that a bill would be initiated by Mr. Conrad Hilton of Hilton Hotels and Senator Frank Carlson of Kansas and was passed (Public Law 82-324) that the President of the United States was to set aside an appropriate day each year, other than Sunday, as a National Day of Prayer. The law was amended to make the first Thursday in May the National Day of Prayer each year. The 2021 National Day of Prayer theme is “Lord, pour out your liberty.” The past year has seen a lot of our liberties eroded due to the pandemic that has spread all over the land. Churches were told not to have services, schools were closed, and businesses were shut down, just to name a few. Thankfully we are getting back to whatever the new normal is and churches have been opening up, schools have students in class, and you can once again go out to eat. The past year has shown us just how precious our liberties are. I hope you pray every day, but on May 6th take some extra time to pray for this great country we live in. If you can attend an event near you in which many will come together to pray. Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 2 Corinthians 3:17 (NKJV)

March Winds bring April Showers, April Showers bring May Flowers. What do May Flowers bring?....Pilgrims! However, May hopes to bring many new Nobles at the upcoming Spring Ceremo- nial scheduled for May 15th. At the time this goes to the Camel’s Calf, we have 20 new masons signing up to become Hella Nobles. And not a minute too soon. The 2021 budget was planned to be able to fund the first quarter with the 2021 dues from the existing Nobles and donations etc. We have met that task! We now have, at the end of March, the most money in our account than we have had at the same time period for the past four years combined. Our operating costs continue and so we must look to other sources to fund our Temple. The remaining part of the 2021 year is to be funded primarily from monies received from rentals. How- ever, additional funds come from our fund raising efforts and through the creation of new Nobles. Our Poten- tate’s Golf Tournament, which is a Hella Temple Fundraiser, is a good example of that. From the Saturday, April 24th, tournament, we’re expected show a profit of $7,500.00 or better. Well done lads and lassies! Thanks to all who helped. Especially Second Ceremonial Master Lance Goff and High Priest and Prophet Steve Lang for their efforts along with the rest of the Divan and their Ladies who helped. In addition to the 64 golfers, all the holes had at least two sponsors. With this article you can see the sign Milady Colleen and I sponsored at Hole 6 (the #6 in line guy). The other aspect to funding Hella is the creation of new Nobles. They are our future. The more Nobles we create, the less impact the Black Camel has upon us. I look forward to the ceremonial, along with others, to meet these new Nobles. As we are about to go Dark for the summer and are about to elect a new Oriental Guide, your Divan and your Nobles will still be at work as we go to San Antonio for TSA and then onto Houston for Imperial. Good luck to all the units in their competitions at both TSA and Imperial. It’s Great to be a Mason!! It’s Great to be a Shriner!! I will continue to post Hella’s financial situation on the outside of the during the summer in that the Divan continues to have monthly Finance meeting along with our Divan meeting. REMINDER, you must be current in your 2021 dues in order to participate in any TSA functions you plan to compete in. Let’s have fun in 2021!! Until we meet again, stay healthy, stay safe, get a nice tan over the Summer and….stay Shriner Strong!!

Hella needs your help, please get involved at your Blue Lodges and visit other lodges when pos- sible. I have petitions available via email upon request.

If you need a list of those lodges within a 40-mile radius of the Temple, let me know, I’ll send an email ASAP.

We need your assistance! I’ll speak to the overall plan during our Membership meetings… please come and participate!!

All Nobles must continue to exhibit an Ambassador role when communicating our purpose and activities to all Master Masons within the appendant bodies that we attend. This is VERY important!

We are HELLA, and we serve the greatest purpose in support of our Shriners Hospitals for Children and your Temple.

Please stand up and be counted when called upon to lead or participate.

Page 8 The Camel’s Calf : Publication of Hella Shrine, Dallas, Texas Suggested Blue Lodge Program Shriners International, also commonly known as The Shriners or formerly known as the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, (AAONMS) is a Masonic society established in 1870 and is headquartered in Tampa, Florida. Shriners International describes itself as a fraternity based on fun, fellowship, and the Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief, and truth.

In The Beginning… In 1870 a group of Masons gathered frequently for lunch in New York City. Among the regulars were Walter M. Fleming, M.D. and William J. “Billy” Florence, an actor. The group frequently talked about starting a new fraternity for Masons – one centered on fun and fellowship, more than ritual. Fleming and Florence took this idea seriously enough to do some- thing about it. Billy Florence had been on tour in France, and had been invited to a party given by an Arabian diplomat. The exotic style, flavors and music of the Arabian-themed party inspired him to suggest this as a theme for the new fraternity. Walter Fleming, a de- voted fraternity brother, built on Florence’s ideas and used his knowledge of fraternal ritual to transform the Arabian theme into the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine (A.A.O.N.M.S.). By June 1922 the cornerstone had been laid for the first Shriners Hospitals for Children® in Shreveport, La. The first patient to be admitted in 1922 was a little girl with a clubfoot, who had learned to walk on the top of her foot rather than the sole. In 1926 the Hella Shrine Hospital for Crippled Children in Dallas, Texas, became the Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital and the oversight and support was assumed by the Scottish Rite Bodies. Never does a Shriner stand so tall as when he stoops to help a child. Through the remarkable foresight, commitment and fundraising skills of the Shriners International (Headquarters in Tampa) nearly one million children have been treated at one of the 21 Shriners Hospitals for Children across the United States, and in Canada and Mexico. There are 196 Temples worldwide and approximately 350k members. Shriners International is a fraternity based on fun, fellowship and the Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief and truth. We strive to continue support and provide care for our Hospitals for Children with a worldwide network, no matter the families ability to pay. Shriners International is among the greatest Philanthropy’s on the planet! Shriners Hospitals for Children has 21 health systems within the United States!

Hella Hospital Fund Raisers include (not limited to): • IHOP Day - members staff the restaurants within our jurisdiction and take donations for the purpose of supporting our kids, while IHOP offers all free pancakes on this one-day event. • Bucket Drive - Annual Collection Brigades, staff designated street locations to collect money for our hospitals (Fez on the corner, branding at its best!) Usually a two-day event. Shifts are available, any time increments from 30 min to 8 hours. • Hella Classic Dirt Track Race - Usually taking place at the Greenville Super Bowl Speedway. This event usually raises 20- 30k dollars for our kids. Toys and Bicycles are drawn by tickets obtained at the box office and handed out by Nobles of the Shrine. It’s always a great family activity! • Clubs and Units around the jurisdiction of Hella will conduct annual fund raisers as well, and contribute to the Hospitals, Hospital Transportation, etc. • We raised more than 75k dollars in 2020 through these events!

Fun and Fellowship activities include (not limited to): • Potentates Ball - Formal party, well decorated with live music, dancing, dinner and open bar! • New Year’s Party - Decorated Ball Room, live music, dancing, and dinner, Champagne and Black-Eyed peas at mid night! • Super Bowl Party! • Jalapeno Cook-Off! • Easter Egg Hunt! • Hella Golf Tournament! • Sanctioned BBQ Contest! • Corn Hole Tournaments! • Halloween Party • Christmas Party! • City Parade participation, at least 3 times per year (every night of the State Fair of Texas)

There are many Hella Units available to entertain your special interest: Clown Unit Directors Staff Brew Club Greeters 101’s Oriental Band Just to name a few, there are many others… come and explore the options!

Hella Shrine is in NO WAY trying to attract your attention away from your Blue Lodge commitment, but instead offer additional fraternal options that include your family. You’ll meet many new friends, and be involved in as much or as little as you wish. There is NO required participation. Stated Meeting is on the third Thursday of each month, except June-August (DARK)

The Camel’s Calf : Publication of Hella Shrine, Dallas, Texas Page 27 Dear Fellow Nobles, Being a Shriner has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I love our Fraternity and all the opportunities it affords me: To be part of a selfless, compassionate brotherhood; to improve the world and our home communities; and to make incredible differences in the lives of children. And through it all, to have fun! Sharing these experiences with other good men is why we work so hard to increase our membership numbers. So I’m especially pleased to let you know that the all-new, revamped BeAShrinerNow.com website has launched, making it easier than ever for all of us to bring new members into our fraternity. Our Shriners International marketing and membership teams have worked hard to make this tool attractive, ef- fective and very easy to use. In addition, we’ve aimed to train at least one Noble from each Temple on the ins and outs of the new website, so if you have questions, there should be someone in your Temple who can help. Together as brothers, we improve lives and communities, and we enjoy having fun together all the while. I can’t wait to start using this amazing new website to help us spread the word and bring even more men of good character into our Fraternity.

Yours in the faith,

James R. “Jim” Smith Imperial Potentate

Today, we assist in raising money for the transportation fund and help bring awareness for the hospitals through active participation in parades. However, we still look to the skies as a unit as we continue to fly our own aircraft. Comprised of pilots and those interested in flying or avia- tion, an open invitation is extended to who wish to join us to complete our mission. Annual dues are $25.00. THINK MEMBERSHIP

Page 38 The Camel’s Calf : Publication of Hella Shrine, Dallas, Texas TOGETHER WE CAN grow our fraternity and philanthropy

A friend? A family member? A co-worker? Membership Growth If every current Shriner resolves to recruit or restore “Just One” noble to Hella Temple, the brotherhood’s ranks will swell tremendously!

The Camel’s Calf : Publication of Hella Shrine, Dallas, Texas Page 39

Are you committed to membership? The three “R”s of membership development are recruitment, retention, and restoration. As Shriners, we all have accountability to our fraternity. It becomes our responsibility to educate others about Shriners International, create more Shriners, recruit more Freemasons, and refer more patients to Shriners Hospital for Children. These concepts are critical to the future success of our organizations. Shriners International has developed a new approach to membership development changing the membership paradigm with the introduction of a new referral program. With this new referral functionality, current nobles can now directly refer names of friends, family members and acquaintances who they feel would make good Shriners. We’re Counting on you!

REFER A GOOD MAN TODAY!

Page 40 The Camel’s Calf : Publication of Hella Shrine, Dallas, Texas Dear Noble Sirs, At the Imperial Session, we saw the unveiling of new Imperial Potentate Jeff Sowder’s “Just One” campaign to increase Shriner membership. A simple but powerful idea drives this initiative: If every current Shriner commits to recruiting or restoring “just one” noble to his temple, the ranks of our brotherhood will swell tremendously. In order to build enthusiasm for the Just One initiative and keep it going, we are instituting a multi-level program for recognizing and rewarding top-line signers in the creation/restoration process for their successful efforts bringing in new members or restoring suspended members. These are: • Level 1 – Upon creation or restoration of one member, the top-line signer will receive a postcard and Just One pin from Imperial Potentate Jeff Sowder. • Level 2 – Upon bringing in two members, the top-line signer will be listed in the Shriner Magazine. • Level 3 – With three new creations or restorations, the top-line signer will receive a certificate of appreciation and a letter of commendation from Imperial Sir Sowder. • Level 4 – After five creations or restorations, the top-line signer will receive a personal phone call from the Imperial Potentate. • Level 5 – Top-line signers responsible for 10 additional Shriner brothers will receive a special invitation to attend a Just One VIP reception with the Imperial Divan at the 2020 Imperial Session. Along with these points of recognition, your temple will probably also want to honor your brothers who embrace the challenge of helping grow local membership. As a record-keeping aid, “Just One” prospect cards were presented at Imperial Session, and will be made available to temples to share with their members. If your temple has members using the cards, you will either need to assign someone to collect them and enter the information into the WebFez MDS, or have the member enter the information himself. (https:// webfez.shrinenet.org/nextstep). If you have any questions about the Just One program, please contact the Membership Office at Shriners Internation- al by email at [email protected] or call (813) 281-0300.
