DEADLINE FOR THE JULY EDITION IS 6am on MONDAY 28th JUNE Input from you all would be gratefully received. At the end of the day, if you don’t contribute then there is no magazine. Talking of which, a lot of you believe that you cannot send items until the deadline time and date. A deadline has to be set but you can send your information/pictures/jokes anytime and it really helps me to put things together the earlier you send your items to me. So please feel free to submit any article. It’s your magazine and just so long as it is Legal, Decent and Appropriate in my eyes, it will be inserted of course.

All entries are currently free of charge. Please remember I can only accept word documents and NO PDF’s or Photocopies. Call me on 01538 304560 if you need any help. Observations of Change 4

‘Life Skills’

As some of you will know, I have been on my own for the past 15/16 months, and have had to learn new “skills”

We always had a mutual understanding at our house that there were “Blue Jobs” and “Pink Jobs”. For example, mowing the lawn – Blue Job, ironing – Pink Job. The only job that crossed over was cooking, I tended to do the majority mainly because I enjoy it and I am a bit more adventurous. The first job I tackled was changing the bed, not something I can remember ever doing, and I have made them but not changed one. So, I get the sheets and pillow cases and set to. I have a king size and I found myself going backwards and forwards, side to side trying to get the sheets level and straight. Then came the tucking in, but after a while the bed looked reasonable, putting the pillows in their cases was also a learning curve. Then I decided I had better wash the ones I had taken off. Now, some of you may have heard this story, about 25 years or so ago, I got banned from using the washing machine. This happened one Sunday, Mrs Gill had gone to work, and I decided to sweep the chimney. (Blue job) So I set about, dust sheets and brushes etc. and along with my son Richard helping got the job done and all tidied up. It was a nice day so I decided we would wash the dust sheets and get them dry. So, into the washer they went, down the side of the washing machine was a tatty looking pink box of washing powder and I assumed that would do for dust sheets. Washing machine started Richard and I sat down to watch the F1 grand prix. After the race had finished, I said to Richard, “go and put the kettle on, we will have a brew” Richard went to the kitchen and all I heard was Dad! Dad! You had better come here! I went through and was met by lather, soap suds or whatever, level with the worktops. We tried brushing, shovelling, buckets etc. and eventually got the lather outside onto the lawn. Mrs Gill returns from work, obviously sees this on the lawn, the kitchen floor was also sticky, and so she asks “what’s happened here then”? Couldn’t really make up a feasible story so I told her. It turns out the powder I had used was Lux or something for hand washing. I can still see her now; she stood in front of me arm outstretched index finger wagging and said “Don’t You Ever Use That Washing Machine Again” I did as I was told.

So back to washing my bedding, in the washer it went, along with the correct powder and some of that juice that softens? Then I had a problem, there are dials and knobs on the machine so I looked for one that said “Wash” No such thing! Lots of settings, Wool, Anti-Allergy, Lingerie, Delicate, Cotton 20deg, Cotton 40deg etc. Not 1 that just said “Wash” There was one that said Bedding/Towels so I used that. It seemed to work OK.

To be continued……. B.G Butterton

New & Local I am planning to run fun, introductory Gelli printing workshops in at my home studio.

They will be 2 and a half hours long, no previous experience required, just wear clothes you don’t mind getting paint on (e.g. sleeves that roll up, an old shirt or apron).

Cost will be £25 per person. They will be for two people only initially so that we can be socially distanced. Refreshments available.

All tools, papers, paints and any other materials will be provided. Dates and times of the workshops will be by mutual agreement during daylight hours.

You get to take home everything you produce and handouts from the workshop.

To have a chat about it or ask questions, please telephone: 01298 84802, or email [email protected]

Regular rapid coronavirus (COVID-19) tests if you do not have symptoms

You can get regular rapid tests if you do not have symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19). 01538 304232 Why youblacklioninn.co.uk should get tested regularly About 1 in 3 people with COVID-19 do not have symptoms but can still infect others. Getting tested regularly is the only way to know if you have the virus. If people test positive and self-isolate, it helps stop the virus spreading.

About rapid tests The test for people without symptoms of COVID-19 is called a rapid lateral flow test. This usually involves rubbing a long cotton bud (swab) over your tonsils (or where they would have been) and inside your nose.

The tests can give you a result in 30 minutes. They use a device similar to a pregnancy test and do not need to be sent to a lab.

You can do a rapid test at home or at a rapid lateral flow test site.

If you test positive, you and anyone you live with will need to self-isolate.

Who can get regular rapid tests? Anyone who does not have symptoms can now get regular rapid lateral flow tests to check for COVID-19.

NOTE: If you have symptoms of COVID-19, you need a different test called a PCR test. Get a PCR test if you have symptoms of COVID-19 on GOV.UK

How to get regular rapid tests Order tests online You can get a pack of 7 rapid tests sent to your home. If you do tests at home, you'll need to report your results online or on the phone.

Order rapid lateral flow home test kits on: https://www.gov.uk/order-coronavirus-rapid-lateral-flow-tests

Collect tests to do at home You can collect up to 2 packs of 7 rapid tests from a local pharmacy or test site. If you do tests at home, you'll need to report your results online or on the phone.

Go to a test site You can get tested at a rapid lateral flow test site. If you go to a test site: • you may need an appointment, so check before you go • a trained helper might be able to help you do the test • you'll get a text or email with the result when it's ready

Thanks go to volunteers, who have saved us a four-figure amount, we now have new bark chippings in the play area ready for the new swings that should be installed Friday 4th June. Hirings are beginning to come in. Fingers crossed we meet the requirements regarding Step 4 in June to enable events and parties to take place. A new fridge and freezer have been purchased for the Bar area. This will make running a bar a lot easier for weddings and party hirings.

The Committee would like to thank the community for their generous donations towards the Play area. To date two picnic benches have been installed and another delivery of wood chippings has been ordered to top up the play pits. Thanks also to June and Jeremy for masterminding the Bus Shelter where the donations are being made.

The AGM was held on Thursday 27th May. Due to work commitments, Katie Murray has resigned from the Committee. Hilary Bassett was elected Chairperson, Sheila McDermott- Secretary, Marjorie Renshaw, Minutes Secretary, Maggie Risby, Gwen Bagshaw, Dianne Wint.

Butterton Annual Village Wakes.

Following the AGM held on the 19th May 2021, it has been agreed that we will look to hold our traditional Village Wakes on the August Bank Holiday Monday. The committee are actively exploring all options for the day in line with ever changing regulations regarding Covid but for now please pop the date in your diary. It is intended that the church service, the retirement and crowning of a new queen will take place as a minimum hopefully followed by Wakes fun at the Village Hall.

In light of this we would love to accept applications for our 2021 Wakes Queen, please contact any member of the committee below for further information. We will include more regarding our hardworking retiring Queen’s activities in the next edition. As a reminder Queen Sophie is organising a tractor run on Sunday 11th July – more details to follow.

As you know the Wakes requires volunteers, donations of auction, programme sponsorship or raffle prizes to make the day successful and the more the merrier so please could I ask if you would be willing to volunteer – on or before the day or donate then please let any of the committee know.

I wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you to the previous chairperson and committee members & volunteers for all their hard work in making the previous Wakes a huge success in the past and I hope that the committee moving forward can continue with the tradition.

We will keep you updated with more details about the day as developments proceed. If you have any feedback or ideas the please do contact me, Kim Kirby on: 07816 840486.

Committee Members:

Kim Kirby: 07816 840486, Gwen Bagshaw: 01538 304358, Jan Lees: 01538 304673, Maggie Risby: 01538 304115, Darren Kirby: 07779 121210, Sarah Stone: 01538 304455 and Lesley Atkins: 01538 304219.

Retirements

Reg and Liz Meakin announced at Annual Parochial Church Meeting of Warslow with Elkstone Parish Council that they were standing down as Church Warden and Treasurer (Reg) and Secretary (Liz).

Reg and Liz have been involved with the PCC for about 30 years and have worked extremely hard behind the scenes and with fundraising events. It’s hard to imagine the Flower Festival without them and it wouldn't be the same without Reg’s tombola! They say they are still willing to support the church but don’t feel they are able to continue as officers.

Until this meeting Reg Meakin and Rachel Moorcroft were joint church wardens of both churches although Reg took responsibility for St John the Baptist, Elkstones and Rachel for St Lawrence, Warslow. The Meakins’ departure will obviously be a great loss to St Johns. No one at the meeting was willing to take any of the posts vacated by them so for the time being Rachel will be the sole Church Warden of both churches. The treasurer's job can be amalgamated with St Lawrence but historically the church's funds have been kept separate and the general feeling of Elkstones villagers is that we would like it kept this way.

Thanks to Reg and Liz’s hard work and the generosity of donors St Johns is in a healthy financial position and Reg reported in his treasurer's report that 2020/21 saw a surplus of funds.

So, if you would like to see St John the Baptist retain its distinctiveness as Elkstones Village Church please think about helping out and taking one of these roles. As you know St John’s is the centre of our small community. Attendance at regular services may be small but we can always guarantee to fill the church with villagers and friends from further afield on high days and holidays: Wakes; Harvest; and Christmas and it has also been used as a meeting place for the ladies’ S.E.W.I.N.G group.

Reg and Liz and, of course, the vicar will be more than willing to discuss the roles with you. You will need to be on the Electoral Role of the Parish of Warslow and Elkstones but that is a formality if you are baptised in the Anglican church.

We are sure you would all like to join us in thanking Reg and Liz for their hard work for St Johns over the last 30 years. More time to spend with grandchildren now Reg and Liz!

We send our very best wishes for a speedy recovery to Peter Grant who is recovering after a fall at home resulting in a broken hip. We are thinking of you Peter and Margaret.

Congratulations to Annie Gregory and James Dennis who got married in London on 24th May. We wish them every happiness for their future. ILAM

Confirmation Preparation and Service

The new Bishop of Stafford, the Rt. Revd. Matthew Parker is now in post. It is now possible for a Confirmation Service to take place. Please let Rev John know if you are interested in being confirmed.

Ilam School Foundation Governors Anyone in the Benefice who would be interested in becoming a Foundation School Governor at Ilam School please contact Rev John. Holy Cross We have a splendid addition the Churchyard at Holy Cross, a new memorial bench located in the southern part of the Churchyard, overlooking St Bertram’s Bridge. It is in memory of John Massey, who was born in Ilam and lived there in his younger years, erected in his memory by his family. Many readers of the newsletter will have fond memories of John when he was a cheese maker at Hartington Cheese factory.

Many thanks also, to Richard Wain for doing such a great job of fitting the bench.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Rob Gray, following his sudden and untimely death.

Ilam Parish Council Chairwoman: Caroline Sellers 01335 350368 Clerk: Paul Watson 01335 310321 [email protected] Website: www.ilam.org.uk.

The Council held its Annual General Meeting and Council Meeting on May 11th. ● Caroline Sellers was re-elected as Chairwoman and Lindsay Oulsnam as Vice-Chairwoman. ● The Chairwoman gave her annual report remarking that progress had been minimal due to Covid restrictions but some progress had been made in planting new bushes and flowers around the village and further parking restrictions have been agreed with the County Council. ● All accounts, receipts & payment summaries, internal audits, accounting statements and the coming year’s budget were viewed, verified and signed as required. They are now available to view on the Council website. ● District Councillor Wain will investigate if the District Council could contribute to the cost of resurfacing the Church Path, though it is unlikely. Meanwhile the County Council will be requested to help. ● National Trust has now taken over car park, though not the toilets, which are still owned by Peak Park. The Parish Council recommended that NT also take over the toilets so that everything is under the same management. NT will look at ways to reduce the traffic problem with visitors sometimes queuing all the way back to Thorpe. ● The County Council will be requested to provide better signage for the Ilam Hall car park. ● The possibility of buying a memorial seat for the village is being investigated. ● There was much debate about parking restrictions near Ilam School and a special meeting has been arranged to discuss the issue on June 8th at Dovedale House. ● Because there are street lights in the village there is automatically a 30mph speed limit. However, most drivers are unaware of this so the County Council will be requested to install 30mph limit signs. ● Peak Park is proposing to instigate parking charges at Blore Pastures car park. The Parish Council believe that this will only lead to more obstructive parking on the lanes around the village, particularly on Blore Pastures. They have therefore lodged a formal objection. ● There is an application to upgrade a footpath from Damgate towards Wetton to be a bridleway and to create a new bridleway past Upper Damgate Farm. The Parish Council has notified the County Council that it against the proposal. ● In addition to the one outside the school, a further dog poo bin has been requested at the other end of the village near the footpath to Dovedale. ● There is now a Public Space Protection Order in place that should help to protect our local environment so hopefully more support will be coming from the police, Peak Park and National Trust to enforce local by-laws. ● The next Council meeting will be held on 13th July at Dovedale House.

News from Ilam C of E (VA) School: 2021 School life at Ilam continues. The children have settled in well to the routines of school and have been enjoying different topics. Kingfisher Class have been studying Ancient Egypt and have been reading the story I was there… Tutankhamun’s Tomb. The book tells the story through the eyes of Ali the water carrier who came across the step in the ground which led to the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb and all its treasures. We also had a visit from Mr Egypt, an Egyptologist who brought lots of artefacts from Egypt. The favourite one, being a ring belonging to a Pharaoh.

Squirrel Class have been learning about travel and tourism. They have designed and made soap boxes from junk materials and are due to race them later this week!

In our Hedgehog Class, the children have been learning about the oceans and seas. Our youngest children have learnt about different sea creatures and have drawn pictures of them and written facts. They have also been learning to double numbers in Maths.

In Forest School, the children have been and collected some wild garlic from Ilam park. They have used it to make garlic butter and have eaten it on some bread which they toasted on a fire!

We are holding an open morning on Monday 7th June from 9.30am until 11.30am. Do come and visit us!

WARSLOW St. Lawrence

Vicar: Father John Baines 01298 83411

Wardens: Mrs. Rachel Moorcroft 01298 84568, Reg Meakin 01538 304295

Treasurer: Emma Gould 01298 687190.

A.P.C.M. We held our Annual Parochial Church Meeting on 9th May 2021, where The Trustees Report was given. We are saddened to note that Reg Meakin has retired from the role of Church Warden and Treasurer for Elkstones, a role that he has performed for in excess of 25 years, alongside his loyal wife Liz, who has also resigned as P.C.C. Secretary. These roles are undertaken voluntarily and often involve many hours of unseen work. We thank them for their efforts and dedication for so many years.

We thank John Gilman and Sarah Garde for their review of the Church Accounts – your help is much appreciated.

Regular Giving

As we have lost over a year’s income from fundraising and services the sustainability of our Church is, therefore, threatened for the future. On this note, we would value and appreciate, anyone who can make a regular donation to our Church by way of regular giving, all donations however, small will make a difference to our Church and help to keep the Church in our village, open for important moments in our lives. If you are a Tax Payer you can Gift Aid your donation, which means that the church will receive extra money at no extra cost to you. If this is something that you are interested in – please contact the Treasurer – Emma Gould on 01298 687190 or [email protected], all donations are treated in the strictest of confidence and will make such a difference. Thank you in anticipation.

Please contact the Vicar if you want to take part in Zoom Services.

If anyone wants to talk to somebody in confidence or just for a chat, because they are lonely or anxious, please contact a member of the church team. We all need each other, never more than now in these uncertain and challenging times.

I pray that through patience and obedience, we work together to get through this crippling situation and we learn that it is the basic things that are important and necessary in life – love and compassion for our fellow man. God bless all of you. E.G.

Flower Festival

We are hoping to hold a ‘Jam Jar Flower Festival’ where members of the local community produce an arrangement, in a jam jar, to commemorate or celebrate special events or people in our lives – it is hoped that this will be less labour intensive than our usual Flower Festival, for this year, and bring our community, old and new, together in celebration. More details to follow next time………………
