Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

news #34 MUNGOLIAN JETSET - MUNGODELICS Hot on the heels of 2011`s "Schlungs", the Jetsetters have kept those buttons busily pushed, and are already here with their next chapter installment, featuring 8 new nuggets entitled "Mungodelics". The album is essentially a psychodramatic sequel to the highly acclaimed "We Gave It All Away, Now We Are Taking It Back" album of 2009, as it is musically a blend of originals and remakes made into originals, as well as solo performances and external collaborations from the band`s musical core members, Knut Saevik and Paul "Strangefruit" Nyhus. All in all, "Mungodelics" musically summons everything that is hazy, dazy, underearthly and crazy. This is the Mungolian Jetset taking you on a ride through the seasons, and shifts of the days and nights, from the Cantina to the Ewok forest, via ritualistic dancing at Kilmin Taboour and stellar swimming in the galactic Goa. Eagle II (born November 14, 1980), better known by his stage name Open Mike Eagle, is an American hip hop artist. In 2010, after being active in the hip-hop scene as part of the collective Project Blowed, he released his debut solo album: Unapologetic Art Rap. With the title of this album, Open Mike Eagle established the self proclaimed subgenre of ‘art rap’, which he would go on to embrace on many of his later albums. In a write-up on ‘art rap’ for Bandcamp Daily titled "A Walk Through the Avant-Garde World of 'Art Rap' Music”, Max Bell argues that the term ‘art rap’ is a reactionary phrase that responds directly to the subgenre of ‘art rock’, and implies that the existing set of sonic or lyrical conventions for hip-hop do not suffice for the message ‘art rappers’ tend to communicate.

Son Lux is the grand genre-less dream of Los Angeles composer Ryan Lott brought to roiling, vivid life with the help of two New Yorkers, guitarist Rafiq Bhatia and drummer Ian Chang. Each is a writer, producer, and performer with omnivorous taste and a penchant for wild improvisation—a band whose mix of electronic pop, unusual soul, and outright experimentalism feels more inviting than ever on the project's fifth album, Brighter Wounds. The songs therein leave behind Son Lux's typically universal themes for deeply personal fare. While making Brighter Wounds, Lott became a father to a baby boy and lost a best friend to cancer. • Sadness with a Dash of Beats: an Interview with Emika
Sadness With A Dash Of Beats: An Interview With Emika In a world which celebrates uniformity and mediocrity it is refreshing to find someone actively striving to create something interesting and new. In art, moulds are meant to be broken and stereotypes cast to the ground. One artist who understands this is Berlin resident Emika. Born Ema Jolly, and raised in Milton Keynes, Emika has utilized her classical training in piano and composition to form the foundation for a body of work which has taken in pop, classical, electronica, ambient and more. Never one to settle for the status quo, her music could resemble the gothic pop of Fever Ray one minute, the futuristic electro of Drexciya the next. By JOHN BITTLES Sadness With A Dash Of Beats: An Interview With Emika I first came across Emika’s music back in 2011 with her wonderful self-titled debut LP which evoked a post- everything world of noir pop and fractured R&B. Since then the artist has gone on to furrow her own singular, yet eclectic path. Amongst a succession of stirring releases, we have had the hazy techno pop brilliance of DVA, gorgeous piano ballads (Klavirni), 80s style synth pop (Drei), orchestra led melancholy (Melanfonie) and lots more. Late last year saw the release of Falling In Love With Sadness, an honest, revelatory record which spoke as much to the brain as the heart. Released on World Mental Health Day the album was full of moments of sonic wonder and was one of 2018’s overlooked gems. Last month Emika led a project to revisit the songs from Falling In Love With Sadness with a thoughtful and accomplished remixes EP.
