EDITORIAL MUSIC WEEK

BERLIN MUSIC WEEK, 3.–7. SEPT. 2014

Dear guests,

Welcome to the 5th Berlin Music Week! We’re looking forward to sharing with you this new and constantly evolving event, which has become an indispensable part of the Berlin music scene.

We would like to thank you for wanting to be part of it and for taking an interest in our work, which has been made possible by our fantastic team within and abroad. We can guarantee that you won’t just have a huge amount of fun, you’re sure to also take away lasting impressions and inspiration for your future work.

In the true spirit of this city, we’ve taken the soundtrack of the movie “everything was better in the old days” and tossed it in the bin. Instead, we set out to look for – forgive the megalomania, it’s part of it all – the future of music. We found what we were looking for in the hundreds of artists who applied for the Berlin Music Week. They will be hitting our stages at the award shows, the showcase festival First We Take Berlin, and the Berlin Fes- tival, as well as on trucks, rooftops or in the streets for the new First We Take the Streets.

We also found the future of music in another kind of band –the startup companies that are bringing change and innovation to the music industry, opening up new possibilities. After last year’s successful premiere, we will be presenting the Music Start Up Corner 2014 featuring the best international business ideas. The Music Hack Day is going to cre- ate the kind of momentum that can be found somewhere between ingenuity and secret science. The new major players of the music industry will be part of it, as they share our aspiration to “hack out” new ideas during the Berlin Music Week.

The future is also in the hands of the recorded industry, which has played a prominent and increasingly international role during the Indie Days at the Berlin Music Week. De- spite the financial challenges faced in the last few years, the industry remains a motor of innovation, helping to encourage young artists, develop talent and create digital market- ing channels. This is partly how our slogan “Music Released” came about – after all, mu- sic has been, and continues to be, released. Plus, music is breaking away from its physical constraints, with all of the risks and opportunities that this process involves.

This 5th Berlin Music Week is actually going to be the last of its kind. The project is to be handed over to the Musicboard Berlin for a new beginning. While it’s easy to start feeling a sense of regret when it comes to difficult decisions like this one, it’s important to remember that every end is a new beginning. We would like to wish the Berlin Music Week all the very best for the future, and wish you, our guests, a terrific time in Berlin!

4 EDITORIAL VUT INDIE DAYS

VUT INDIE DAYS

The VUT INDIE DAYS have already established themselves as Germany´s essential event for recorded music. For three days, Postbahnhof Berlin will become a meeting place for the entire independent music industry offering great opportunities to connect with Ger- man and international independent companies. The VUT Indie Days are for the second time part of Berlin Music Week and encompass a broad range of events: Committees and plenums will be meeting internally under the heading PARLIAMENT on 3 September. The panels and presentations as part of the WORD! conference will cover relevant topics and current challenges for independents. Keynotes by internationally renowned speakers of the independent music industry are also part of the program as well as interactive parts like the matching sessions and workshops, which will bring together music companies. Additionally, VUT members will be part of the PRODUCT MARKET of Berlin Music Week and will present their products in the B2B section of Postbahnhof. The events are symbioti- cally linked with those of the other partners of Berlin Music Week; their planning was closely coordinated and all activities on 4 and 5 September 2014 in Postbahnhof are open without restrictions to all delegates.

Last but certainly not least: After the successful premiere of the VIA! VUT INDIE AWARDS last year, VUT will once again celebrate independent artists and companies. On the evening of 5 September, the VIA! VUT INDIE AWARDS will be awarded in six categories based on qual- ity and not on sales figures. Last year Otto Normal (Best Newcomer), Modeselektor (Best Experiment), DJ Koze (Best Album), City Slang (Best Label) and Kid Kopphausen (Best Act) won an award. If you want to know this year´s winners, just come to the award show!

Merlin clearly represents the most valuable basket of recorded music rights outside of the three major labels, reflecting a share in excess of 10% of the global and US digital music markets, with much higher shares in markets where English is not the first language, reflecting the importance of independent investment in domestic rep- ertoire around the globe.

D O 4 . 9 . THU 9/4 ENGLISH 11:45–12:45 FRITZ LOUNGE DEFINING THE ULTIMATE HOME MUSIC EXPERIENCE BY SONOS

We live in a post-consumer electronics world. When you invest in a product, you are mak- ing a transaction towards an experience, not an object in itself. Music lovers are saturated with choice, making finding new music a challenge. Meanwhile, artists must navigate an increasingly complex media landscape to reach new audiences. How can we reduce the barriers between music lovers and music; artists and their audience? How can we create new and deeper connections to music through better products and services? How might data influence the music industry and music listeners? What new types of user experi- ences do we need to create and facilitate better connections between artists and fans? From the artist perspective, it would be interesting to explore questions as what do they think people wants from music nowadays and the role of musicians in the community. How is technology contributing to give artists creative freedom? Are artists today more in control of their own music and distribution? How are new media and music services re-shaping their relationships with fans?

D O 4 . 9 . THU 9/4 GERMAN & ENGLISH SPOKEN 12:00–13:00 C2 WHEN TEENAGE MUSIC FANS ARE YOUR AUDIENCE

Many teenagers use different channels and media than adults to listen to music and par- ticipate in pop culture. How do music and media user statistics actually look like when you single out the 11 – 19 year olds? And what specifics do music and video producers take into consideration when creating for a very young target group? What kind of media do they use, how do they address young people, what are their channels of interaction with fans? What do they know about listening preferences, mainstream and subcultures, tastes and attitudes of young people today? What kind of problems can arise and how to deal with them? This panel discusses experiences of working with teenage audiences – from the perspectives of political education, video shows, and music – and with the outcomes of a recent study on music user behaviour among teenagers.

The huge amount of new music and the unlimited availability across all formats may cause music to be devalued by its own existence. We will show you how heavily curated quality music drives the passion for music and increases the willingness to pay. Let’s take a look back to the golden age of record stores, and the position of the clerk behind the desk. What was lost in the transition between physical and digital music, and what has been achieved?

Inspired by last years track “Give Life Back To Music” by Daft Punk, Sveinung Rindal from WiMP will divine the future of listening – not in the sense of background sounds or the constant stream of music in shopping centers, but more in the traditional way of lis- tening to high quality records through modern equipment. As the consumption of music rises, it is interesting to see how HiFi music streaming differentiates from low-quality superficial noise.

LEGAL UPDATE 2014 – URHEBERRECHT, QUO VADIS?

D O 4 . 9 . THU 9/4 GERMAN 14:05–14:15 FRITZ LOUNGE IS CONTENT REALLY KING? – DIGITAL CHALLENGES AND THE FIXATION ON NUMBERS

For labels and especially musicians the rise of Digital and Social Media has brought up some great new chances for creating, sharing, distributing and selling their music. In theory, a band from a small town in Bavaria could now grow a fanbase in Brazil. Sounds easy, if there wasn’t this big “BUT”. Undoubtedly labels and musicians are facing both new chances but also new challenges alike. Defining new ways of marketing, being cre- ative, staying up-to-date about platforms – basically they need to wear more hats than ever before. And over all this looms a fixation on numbers. In Social Media it’s common word that content is king. So why are we so fixated on numbers like fans, followers and likes?

When it comes to the words “fair” and “transparent” there is always an ample scope for interpretation. Still, the players of the digital music value chain haven’t found a consen- sus what “fair” and “transparent” means when it comes to the artists’ remuneration. The panel will discuss how to put both constructs in more concrete terms and how creator’s needs can be met while understanding those of the other players. DOMUS, the German umbrella association for music creatives, will issue suggestions for a more effective imple- mentation of the German Copyright Act, “Urheberrechtskorb 2”. We can expect an inter- esting and controversial discussion.

D O 4 . 9 . THU 9/4 ENGLISH SPOKEN 15:15–16:15 FRITZ 1 HOW TO BEST SUPPORT ARTISTS NOWADAYS? – ARTIST SUPPORT I

In the past years, pop culture has received increased attention by public culture fund- ing bodies. Many musicians today search for funding opportunities (public and private money) to finance their next album or tour, rather than relying entirely on the market. In some cases, e.g. Zoolabs or RBMA, private money flows into training or publicity for upcoming artists.

In this panel, we bring together three innovative thinkers on artist support to share their visions and experiences on how best to go about helping musicians in the current eco- nomic and cultural settings. Is it about building and supporting infrastructures or pro- viding equipment, do artists need training and mentoring, or should we establish musi- cian residencies (as in the fine arts)? How do we allow for artists’ time to create great pop music – low cost of living, increased entrepreneurial skills, a monthly stipend, or access to networks of collaborators? And do different forms of support make sense at different times in an artist’s career? How can future artist support programmes be structured, and which gaps need to be addressed?

ONE YEAR ON, IS THE NEW WORLD ANY BRAVER?

One year on, is the new world any braver? Has the digital market delivered on its prom- ise to level the playing field, empower cultural and creative SMEs and provide access to culture in all its diversity while adequately remunerating creators and their commercial partners? One year after speakers first exchanged views on the panel ‘This new world ain’t brave at all’ at the 2013 VUT Indie Days, this panel will take stock of where the on- line market for culture stands in Europe and where the opportunities and the challenges lie for cultural and creative actors. This topic is very timely as the control of internet gi- ants on the cultural and creative markets becomes ever tighter.

How can a real level playing field be achieved? Have online giants become so powerful that they are out of regulators’ reach? Is the new world looking bright or rather gloomy? More than 20 years after the Riot Grrrl movement the music industry still lacks diversity. What has changed since then and what has not? Taking the role of women as an example, the panelists will discuss the status quo as well as possible strategies to create a more diverse music industry. What are the consequences for cultural diversity, if for example the majority of artists is white, male and has a university degree? And what are the im- plications for music businesses and their success? Do we really need measures to increase diversity or are they redundant? Bringing together people from different areas of the music industry to exchange their views and experiences, the panel will also address the challenges for women in the music business and how both, men and women, can change the situation on the creative as well as on the business side.

THE 13 MOST INSIDIOUS, PERVASIVE LIES OF THE MODERN MUSIC INDUSTRY

If you’re happy with the way the music industry turned out, then maybe you’re living in a fantasy land. Because all of the wonderful possibilities we thought would happen never quite materialized, and many of the myths we believe in are simply untrue. There’s more music than ever before , and more musicians making that music, but the class of power-players is just as small or smaller than it was in the past . And, from the perspec- tive of the artist, the money is smaller as well, with survival a full-time pursuit for even the ‘successful’ artists among us. But even the most powerful companies – like Spotify – are struggling as well, and fighting for scraps against the most powerful behemoth of them all, YouTube. So how did we get here, and why do we still believe in fairy tales and unicorns? In this brutally honest keynote, Digital Music News publisher Paul Resnikoff dismantles some of the most pernicious myths of the modern music industry, and dis- cusses why we insist on believing them. Get ready for a refreshingly honest and highly- interactive discussion.

The music videos in this presentation give an introduction to the topic of the impact of digital tools on the music market in African countries, and provide examples for the dis- cussion to follow. As an introduction to our discussion, this short selection of music videos highlights how digital tools are reshaping the music business throughout Africa.

DISCUSSION Digital technologies are facilitating music production and distribution. At the same time only a minority of people in African countries have access to internet and digital media. How does the ongoing digitalization change the African music market? Which role do digital and social networks play in reaching local and global audiences? These questions will be discussed by Yoel Kenan from the digital music platform Africori (South Africa), Benjamin Lebrave from the label Akwaaba Music (Ghana), Georg Milz from Outhere Records (Germany) and the music journalist Phiona Okumi from AfriPOP.

Countless hours are spent at making music in recording studios all over the world. Artists and producers invest their talent, soul and time in making the best product possible. A whole generation ended up hearing only parts of that experience because we had to, in the early days of Internet (when we spelled it with a capital I), shave away enough of the music to fit it through the pipes. When you cut away enough music, at one point your foot stops tapping. You want to get off the dance floor and your goosebumps disappear. Is quality audio only for old men? With vinyl back on the agenda and full quality stream- ing – is audio quality and music listening back on the agenda for the MP3-generation?

FAST FORWARD – NORWEGIAN EXPERIENCES WITH THE DIGITALIZATION OF THE MUSIC MARKET

In 2012, digital downloads and streaming services surpassed for the first time physical revenues in the Norwegian music market. The usage of music streaming is widespread in Norway, with about 65% of revenues in the recorded music industry being generated by streaming. In other words, streaming is now the main way of music consumption for the average Norwegian. At the same time, overall sales in recorded music have risen from 2012 to 2013 by 11%, mainly through the increase in streaming numbers. – source

What are the lessons learnt from the digitalization of the music market in Norway? What were the key factors behind spread of digital music, and are those experiences transferra- ble to other countries? Are the monetization models any different than elsewhere? What would Norwegian protagonists in digital music recommend for others, in other countries, who are on their way, but not quite there? Is this a model of the future for others, or is this case particular to Norwegian circumstances?

ARTIST SUBSCRIPTIONS: THE FUTURE MUSIC BUSINESS MODEL WHICH IS ALREADY HERE

One of the most effective “direct to fan” business models has always been an “artist sub- scription” – a music act or a record label setting up a membership program for their most loyal followers. A subscription platform allows fans to access exclusive content, reach out directly to an artist, and gain a unique experience, all by paying a monthly fee. Today, with new technologies, tools, and – even more importantly – fans used to subscribing to online services, this concept is getting more practical and real than ever before.

It’s one of the most demanding and time-consuming, but also the most profitable ways of a direct-to-fan monetisation. A recent Deadmau5 Live project is one of numerous ex- amples of artists jumping on board.

You don’t have to have a fanbase of the Deadmau5 scale to build your own membership program though, the concept is applicable not just to A-list celebrities. Any band or a musician, even with a modest following, can try it out. On this panel, Andrew Apanov will explain how to set up an Artist Subscription platform with little investments, and how to make it successful.

HOW TECHNOLOGY IS CHANGING THE LIVE MUSIC INDUSTRY

The influence of social discovery and sharing has finally reached the live music indus- try, where combined with innovations in mobile technology and the omnipresent power of data it leads to undreamt of possibilities for one of the most important sectors of the music industry.

In her keynote address, Elsita Meyer-Brandt will explore the main changes faced as a result of this revolution by individual players along the value chain, starting with the artist and moving on to the promoter and the venue operator. She will also look at the way classic artist management is likely to be affected, with the empowerment of artists by new technology already a hot topic in the USA.

INDIE GOES HI-TECH: THE END OF ANALOGUE WARMTH AND COSY NOSTALGIA

For decades and particularly since the millennium, indie music has been known for its old-fashioned, friendly, low-tech aesthetic. But in recent years, there have been signs of a paradigm shift commensurate with indie’s move online and the harsh realities of post-re- cession life. As the traditional indie aesthetic gets more and more tired, used to advertise phones and gentrify cities, a new force is stirring underground – what I call ‘hi-tech.’ The hi-tech aesthetic is composed of a number of loosely related styles, scenes and fashions, from the dead-eyed corporate mood music of vaporwave through to the crazed cuteness of the PC Music label, and several cold, alien new strains of . It represents a new generation of musicians and fans who are not content with traditionalism and are explor- ing the fragile line between futurist dystopias and futurist utopias.

Discussing and presenting examples of this new aesthetic, Adam will look at artists such as Oneohtrix Point Never, Laurel Halo, James Ferraro, Arca and FKA Twigs as well as dozens of emerging artists, together with the ways in which listeners navigate and par- ticipate in their new online world through Facebook, Soundcloud and Bandcamp.

DIFFERENTIATORS FOR THE STREAMING BUSINESS

All music streaming services obtain their contents from more or less the same source: the catalogues of major and independent music labels. But what will be the future differentia- tors in this highly competitive market? What makes a service “unique“ or is pricing the only means of gaining market share?

We will discuss strategies and present new products that might have the potential to make the difference.

THE VALUE OF ONLINE

At every music conference and in every music industry discussion, both within prac- tice as well as in academia, it is commonly acknowledged that “the game has changed”. Downloading, video and music streaming, social media and crowdfunding have opened up new alleys to the music industry. What is lacking from most of these discussions is how to measure the online presence and how to convert this presence into an economic value. This is the focus of current research conducted by the Inholland University of Ap- plied Sciences, in collaboration with BUMA Cultuur, the Dutch music export organiza- tion (also the organizer of events such as Eurosonic Noorderslag and Amsterdam Dance Event). The aim of this study is to come up with a method to measure the value of online for pop musicians. We will present recent findings from our study and would like to open the discussion with the audience on this topic and their own experiences.

SURVIVING STREAMING: HOW INSIGHT INTO LISTENING PATTERNS AND THE STREAMING MODEL PROVIDE MAPS FOR THE FUTURE

Currently, Norway is among the most advanced streaming markets in the world, with around 3 of 4 Norwegians using music streaming services. The research project Clouds & Concerts at the University of Oslo has studied how people use streaming service WiMP Music since 2010. This talk presents key results that can help artists and labels better understand and survive in the new era of access-based music. It addresses questions ev- ery artist and label should ask about how to make and release music based on how people actually listen. And last, but not least, the talk discusses key challenges with the way revenue is shared with artists in the current ‘pro rata model’ used by the major streaming services, and shows how alternative ways of distributing subscription fees and ad rev- enues could provide a more sustainable streaming model for the future.

MOST WANTED: MUSIC

The Berlin Music Commission is again hosting the “Most Wanted: Music” in 2014, as part of the word conference programme of the Berlin Music Week.

This year it’s about identifying and evaluating the potential for crossovers between music and other parts of the creative industry.

The BMC will be presenting a range of first-rate speakers, including fashion designer Kilian Kerner; photographer Olaf Heine; Dirk Reichardt from Barefoot Music, who is responsible for selecting the entire music and song collection for German top producer Til Schweiger’s film productions; plus, with the support of the Media Board Berlin-Bran- denburg, Christoph Krachten from Mediakraft Networks, the leading online TV station in Central Europe, which provides best practices examples, or so-called “Creative Case Studies” and follows musical developments.

The hugely popular Music Supervisor Sessions will be taking place once again in coop- eration with NARIP. This year it will be a “German Edition” featuring Milena Fessman (Cinesong) and Gerrit Winterstein (White Horse Music/Jung von matt) – two stars of the German sync business.

In addition, Berlin Music Week visitors will have a chance to ask the questions that have been on the tip of their tongue in the so-called “Music Industry Circuit Training” ses- sions, 5 minute sessions featuring up to ten music industry experts from record labels, publishers, and the fields of promotion, booking, copyright and so on. The whole thing will be offered at two levels – basic level and CEO level.

On September 5, the Berlin Music Commission will be hosting their popular welcome and showcase evening in FluxBau. Once again, the evening will feature selected artists from the current edition of the much-esteemed “listen to berlin” compilation. Parasite Single, Phia, DJ Ipek and a secret guest will be performing for Berlin Music Week guests and delegates. The event is part of First We Take Berlin, the Berlin Music Week’s showcase festival, and will be held in cooperation with FluxFM.

Music Start Up Corner will introduce the next generation of digital music newcomers on 5 September 2014. Focus of the second edition of the elevator pitch format will be on young interactive music companies emerging from international startup hubs such as Tel Aviv, London, Oslo and Stockholm. The Music Start Up Corner 2014 is hosted by Berlin Music Week, the music innovation hub Mashup Norway and Projekt Zukunft, an initiative of Berlin’s Senate Department for Economics, Technology and Research.

Music Start Up Corner 2014 is the official hub of Startup Safary, Berlin’s first day of open doors for startups that helps job seekers and employers find the best fits between each other.

MORE THAN 30 APPLICATIONS, 10 FINALISTS Over the summer international startups did have the opportunity to send in their ideas, products and services in order to apply for participation. More than 30 interna- tional and local applications reached our jury who choose their ten favorite up- and newcomers. The finalists have the chance to present themselves to an audience of ex- perts, potential partners and investors in elevator pitches at Berlins own Postbahnhof.

“Berlin’s specific interaction between the tech and music industry is reflected by the pro- gramme of Berlin Music Week: Young and innovative tech companies with a close link to the music-ecosystem are in the focus of the Music Start Up Corner,” says Eric Eitel, chairman all2gethernow e.V. and curator of Interactive Music, Tech & Startups at Ber- lin Music Week. “After focussing on the German scene last year this year’s participants also come from international music tech hubs like London, Stockholm or San Francisco.”

The ten international finalists are SpinnUp (Sweden), cPulse (France), nagual sounds (Germany), Reactify (UK), Soundytics (Luxembourg), feelthebeat (Germany), Zoo Labs (California), Klang (Germany), Disco Fingers (Norway) and Threaks GmbH (Germany).

THE FINALISTS

SPINNUP Spinnup is an online digital music distribution service from Universal Music that launched early 2013 in Sweden. It offers unsigned artists the opportunity to publish their music worldwide.

CPULSE The idea for cPulse, the worldwide first case with LEDs for Android 4.4 Smartphones, came from France and combines music and light. Users are able to create “lighting tracks” for their favorite songs or let the system create them by matching the light effects automatically to the music – e.g. at the dance floor.

NAGUAL SOUNDS Nagual Sounds from Berlin is developing Nagual Dance – a software which translates body movement, captured by a 3D camera, into music – in real time. So every dance per- formance will become an interactive music experience.

REACTIFY Reactify from London is a pioneer in music production and specialized in interactive mu- sic production and composing, e.g. with sound installations or apps. Reactify’s work is on the bleeding edge of what is possible in the realm of music composition and distribution.

SOUNDYTICS With the technique of Soundytics from Luxembourg users can choose the right music for the current situation – e.g. driving, doing sports or the nightlife. These playlists cannot only be filtered by genre but also by mood, tempo, subgenre, tonality or instruments.

FEELTHEBEAT Feelthebeat was developed in Berlin and is a wearable metronome which vibrates to the beat of the music. It can be connected to a smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth. With the feelthebeat app the metronome’s settings like beats per minute or the rhythm can be adjusted.

ZOO LABS At Zoo Labs artists and musicians are meeting entrepreneurs to learn from them – and vice versa. The Music Tech Incubator in California offers the opportunity to record new music, participate in workshops or develop long lasting business strategies together.

95 SPECIALS: MUSIC START UP CORNER

KLANG The Berlin based company Klang is behind the interactive 3d in-ear audio technology for headphones and wants to replace the stereo sound this way. This shall help for example bands when they’re performing live on stage.

THREAKS The Hamburg based startup Threaks is specialized in the development of non-linear mu- sic video games. The game Beatbuddy has its own soundtrack for every level and players who master moving and attacking to the rhythm will have a distinct upper hand.

VIA! VUT INDIE AWARDS 2014

After a successful premiere last year, the VIA! VUT INDIE AWARDS – prizes for independent greatness – will once again be awarded at Postbahnhof. Just like last year, there are six categories: Best Act, Best Album, Best Label, Best Newcomer, Best Experiment and Special Prize. The latter was judged by the VUT board, while the VUT members decided who is to be awarded Best Newcomer. The award-winners in the four remaining categories were chosen by an ex- pert jury containing 100 music experts and music professionals. The trophies will not be awarded in a “classic” award ceremony, but at a party with well-known entertainers at the turntables like Dimitri Hegemann, DJ Supermarkt, Mo Loschelder and DJ DSL, as well as videos of Editude Pictures. Christof Ellinghaus (City Slang) will be taking you through the evening as the event moderator. We are obliged to keep the names of the award-winners top secret until 5 September, but the following nominees have been shortlisted:

106 SPECIALS: FIRST WE TAKE THE STREETS

PREMIERE: FIRST WE TAKE THE STREETS

With the new and free festival format First We Take The Streets, Berlin Music Week shows, on September 4 and 5, where the best, most accidental, quirkiest and often most surprising concerts and artists are to be found: namely, on the street. Participation is open to all artists who can take on the challenge of the street and don’t shy away from direct eye contact with the audience.

On September 4 and 5, between Berlin Music Week’s conference and festival centre, the Postbahnhof, and East Side Gallery, everything will turn around musicians living in Berlin, street musicians and sound artists. Between 3pm and 8pm, large mats will lay ready on the streets to be used for concerts in lieu of traditional stages. All are welcome, from beatboxers to singer-songwriters, including electronic loop artists. First We Take The Streets is the new link between Berlin Music Week’s daytime programme, held at the Postbahnhof, where the local and international music industry meets, and First We Take Berlin, the evening club festival at which the hottest newcomers give it their all at just 20 clubs from around the Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg districts.

WELCOME TO THE O2 WORLD SPREE BAR The o2 World Spree Bar is the pivotal point of the new festival. The main stage of First We Take The Streets is situated here and, along with good music, it offers late-summer refreshment for music fans, music professionals and tourists. Visitors to the o2 World Spree Bar can, moreover, enjoy a free Solarboat-Shuttle to Fluxbau, which is located directly opposite on the other side of the Spree, and where a few musical highlights await.

HELLO, MIGHTY OAKS As curators for the main stage of First We Take The Streets, the Mighty Oaks, who start- ed out as street musicians in the capital and are now being talked about internationally, are local heroes and a real coup for the festival. You can be sure that this collaboration with the Mighty Oaks will build some musical bridges over to the excellent evening pro- gramme of First We Take Berlin. A few surprises may also be reckoned with!

Under the auspices of the fifth Berlin Music Week, this new and free-of-charge festival format celebrates its premiere. The event was conceived and brought to life by Kulturpro- jekte Berlin, as producer of Berlin Music Week, in cooperation with o2 World, sponsors of the showcase festival First We Take Berlin, along with Flux FM, with the aim of provid- ing a unique platform for new, aspiring musicians and artists.

107 SPECIALS: NEW MUSIC AWARD 2014

NEW MUSIC AWARD 2014

Fresh Sounds from all over Germany: This year too, the New Music Award, a prize for the best young German musician(s), will be the illustrious con- clusion to Berlin Music Week. A jury will choose a successor to Munich band Exclusive, who triumphed last year. Nine exciting acts, selected in recent weeks by ARD’s youth radio broadcasters, are in the running. The artists chosen will compete against each other in a big finale. On the 7th of September they’ll get a chance to win over an audience and the jury with their performance, playing live in Berlin‘s Admiralspalast.

FROM INDIE-POP TO ELECTRO-RAP, FROM AUGSBURG TO JEVER: WE’VE GOT IT ALL! Ranging from acoustic blues-rock and funky indie-pop through to electro-rap, the many facets of Germany‘s current music landscape will be showcased on a single day, with musicians coming from places as far apart as Augsburg and Jever. ANNENMAYKANTEREIT is a band of former buskers characterised by profound texts and a melancholy sound. TOM THALER & BASIL and DREHMOMENT represent a very different genre, namely hip-hop, each of them in a very different way. ERRDEKA, who impressed everyone at the First We Take Ber- lin festival last year, also has a style rooted in rap. Singer LARY will present her “Future German Wave” sound in the battle for the award, and also on show will be indie-pop to dance to by THIS VOID, PEWPEW with their shrill synth-sound, pensive pop from HEINRICH and indie-disco-rap from FAAKMARWIN.

AS WELL AS THE AWARD, WINNERS WILL RECEIVE A VOUCHER WORTH 10,000 EUROS A jury made up of representatives from the participating broadcasters and music indus- try experts will decide who gets to take the award home in the finale. As well as a brilliant award, the winner(s) will be given a voucher to buy music equipment worth 10,000 Euros.

WANTED – A SUCCESSOR TO BONAPARTE, KRAFTKLUB & EXCLUSIVE The New Music Award is one of Germany’s most important prizes for young musicians and bands and is a co-production involving all ARD‘s youth radio broadcasters. It seeks to discover aspiring artists and promote them nationally. The participating broadcasters are Bremen Vier (Radio Bremen), DASDING (SWR), 1LIVE (WDR), Fritz (rbb), MDR SPUTNIK, N-JOY (NDR), PULS (BR), 103.7 UnserDing (SR) and YOU FM (hr). This award is a groundbreaking stepping stone for newcomers to the music world, offering artists access to a large audience through the support provided by the nine ARD youth radio broadcasters and the inclusion of the competition in Berlin Music Week. New Music Award winners in previous years have included Bonaparte from Berlin, Kraftklub from Chemnitz and OK Kid (formerly Jona:S) from Gießen.

In 2014 the New Music Award will again be sponsored by the Initiative Musik gemeinnüt- zige Projektgesellschaft mbH with project funding provided by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media, Professor Monika Grütters, based on a resolution passed by the German parliament (Bundestag).
