Caroline International och Glassnote Records Presents: SON LUX SCORES THE DISAPPEARANCE OF ELEANOR RIGBY OUT NOVEMBER 4th, 2014 New York, NY- Glassnote Entertainment Group is excited to introduce the newest addition to the independent label’s roster with the worldwide signing of New York City-based artist Son Lux. Son Lux is led by Ryan Lott. After his first record, At War With Walls and Mazes, NPR’s All Songs Considered declared him the “Best New Artist.” Son Lux has released two EPs and two LPs since, including 2011’s We Are Rising LP, ambitiously written and recorded in just 28 days. In 2013, Son Lux released Lanterns, to critical acclaim, which he most recently re-imagined as the Alternate Worlds EP. The Alternate Worlds EP reworks four songs from Lanterns and features Lorde. Son Lux, never one to keep to one project, as Pitchfork has keenly noticed, “works at the nexus of several rarely-overlapping Venn Diagrams.” As such, few artists have built a more impressive and varied array of collaborators; Pop icons Lorde, Beyoncé producer Boots and Richard Parry (Arcade Fire), indie darlings Sufjan Stevens (with whom he shares the side project Sisyphus) and Peter Silberman (The Antlers), composers Nico Muhly and Pulitzer Prize winner Caroline Shaw, rappers Serengeti, Busdriver and Beans (Antipop Consortium), and MacArthur Genius Grant recipient and Bluegrass legend Chris Thile are all among Son Lux’s recent collaborators. Son Lux has also made a name for himself composing music for film, theater and dance. Most recently, Son Lux has written and arranged the score for The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby, starring James McAvoy and Jessica Chastain, in theaters now. Of the score, Ryan Lott states, “Jessica Chastain’s character in the film is like glass; She is both rigid and extremely fragile. This inspired me to explore the sonic potential of tuned wine glasses, which became the primary source of sound and texture for the score.” The score will be available on November 4th via Glassnote Records/Caroline International Son Lux is working on a new album for release in 2015 and is about to kick off a full tour of Europe, including stops at the Pitchfork Music Festival in Paris on October 31st and the Iceland Airwaves Festival on November 8th, 2014. The lyrics for these pieces are all written by the author and performed with hip-hop group Stanley Odd. The songs have been recorded and commercially released by a number of independent record labels (Circular Records, Handsome Tramp Records and A Modern Way Recordings) with worldwide digital distribution licensed to Fine Tunes, and physical sales through Proper Music Distribution. Considering the poetics of Scottish hip-hop, the accompanying critical reflection is an autoethnographic study, focused on rap lyricism, identity and performance. The significance of the writing lies in how the pieces collectively explore notions of identity, ‘outsiderdom’, politics and society in a Scottish context. Further to this, the pieces are noteworthy in their interpretation of US hip-hop frameworks and structures, adapted and reworked through Scottish culture, dialect and perspective.

As a member of Son Lux he anchors the ensemble’s minimal arrangements — and he appears at MASS MoCA with his new trio on Saturday, February 10, at 8pm. In 2014, Rafiq Bhatia and drummer Ian Chang joined Ryan Lott’s trip-hop project Son Lux, creating a three-piece dynamo. Bhatia epitomized the Son Lux approach to music, mixing electronic pop, unusual soul, and outright experimentation into a heady, genre-less production — an approach that prompted NPR to describe the group as “the world’s most lethal band.” Son Lux has since toured extensively and released an LP, Bones, to critical acclaim, described by NPR as “phenomenal…blend[s] pulsating electronics and skittering start-stop beats with stark piano melodies, lavish string flourishes and flute trails, and Lott’s soulfully robotic voice.” Born in Hickory, North Carolina, Bhatia first began playing the guitar in high school. His interest in music largely stemmed from the rap he heard on the radio and his grandfather’s a cappella renditions of Ginans— or short hymns based on verses from the Quran.
