  • A Musicological and Theological Analysis of Sufjan Stevens's Song, "Christmas Unicorn"
ABSTRACT I'm a Christmas Unicorn: A musicological and theological analysis of Sufjan Stevens's song, "Christmas Unicorn" Janna Martindale Director: Jean Boyd, Ph.D. The purpose of this thesis is to introduce the reader to Sufjan Stevens’s 2012 fifty- eight track album Silver & Gold, and specifically the final song, “Christmas Unicorn,” a twelve and half minute anti-epic pop song that starts off in a folk style and builds to an electronic, symphonic climax. The album presents many styles of Christmas songs, including Bach chorales, hymns, original songs, “Jingle Bells,” and a Prince cover. I argue that this album is a post-modern presentation demonstrating all the different expressions of Christmas are valid, no matter how commercial or humble. “Christmas Unicorn” synthesizes all these styles through the metaphor of the unicorn, which is a medieval symbol of Christ in the Nativity and the Crucifixion. Stevens uses the symbol of the unicorn to represent Christ as well as all humans and all the different attributes of Christmas. • Album Review: Carrie & Lowell
Album review: Carrie & Lowell Sufjan Stevens seems sadder than usual. Although previous Stevens albums have covered topics from the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway to Illinois state holidays and from serial killers to night zombies, 2015’s Carrie & Lowell is a deeply personal album that focuses on his relationship with his mother, Carrie, and her death. Stevens sings about his feelings of abandonment, depression, and regret over sparse, haunting guitars, minimal percussion, and the occasional synthesizer. The album differs musically and content-wise from Age of Adz and even the critically-acclaimed Illinois, but despite these variations, it is definitely worth a listen. photo: Nathan Drezner Carrie & Lowell opens with “Death With Dignity,” in which Stevens laments his lack of relationship with his mother and tries to reconnect with her even after her death. In “Should Have Known Better,” he elaborates on his backstory and how his abandonment at a video store provides a reason for his feelings of distance and disconnect overall. In these two songs, Stevens shows his technical prowess, deftly layering vocals over synthesizers over pianos and guitars to create a haunting, almost ethereal soundscape that makes it seem as if the songs are directed only at you. However, this mixing is not an indicator that the album is going in the direction of Illinois’s sweeping orchestral arrangements, which feature dozens of instruments. With the brass in “All Of Me Wants All Of You” as the most complex orchestration on the album, the simplicity of the production goes to show that deep down, Sufjan Stevens is just a man with a story to tell.

Tanit Plana PUBER This project is a kind of symphony of collaborations in which Tanit Plana (Barcelona, 1975) looks at adolescence and its cultural practices. It features 74 portraits of teenagers from different social classes as well as TikTok videos, podcasts on youth subcultures, a playlist of music and recreations of graffiti and performances. 20.10.2020 – 21.02.2021 Conceived expressly for the rooms facing the Rambla, this project is a kind of symphony of collaborations in which Tanit Plana (Barcelona, 1975) explores adolescence and its sociocul- tural practices. It features 74 portraits of teenagers from different social classes and backgrounds who present themselves to the pho- tographer’s camera in dramatic urban environments, bor- derlands where the city takes on a ghostly look. Together with these portraits, in the same museum space, is a selection of 200 TikTok videos chosen by the cultural researcher Estela Ortiz. Visitors are accompanied on their tour of the exhibition by the sound universe of these videos, random bits of dialogue, groans and music. Oriol Rosell, an authority on youth subcultures, presents three themed podcasts based on a playlist, available from La Virreina Centre de la Imatge’s Spotify channel, that includes the three songs most listened to by the participants in the project at the time their portrait was taken (see page 14). Lastly, we see a phrase written in the manner of graffiti that Tanit Plana came across by chance on the streets of Barcelona. The graffiti artist, massatardmare, was eventually identified and she herself recreated it on one of the walls in the exhibition room.
