Tickets are $17.50 and go on sale this Sunday, August 10 at 12:00 pm at the Marcus Center Box Office. Ticket can be purchased by phone at 414-273-7206 or online at MarcusCenter.org and Ticketmaster.com. Groups 10+ call 414-273-7121 ext. 210 or 213. Since debuting as My Brightest Diamond in 2006, Shara Worden, acclaimed singer, songwriter and musician, has released three full-length albums, including her most recent, 2011’s All Things Will Unwind. Of the album, The New York Times praises, “…she has a keen sense of the dramatic, and a sure understanding of dynamics,” while allmusic asserts, “All Things Will Unwind finds this musical auteur at the top of her game, maturing, pushing her already broad boundaries, and brimming with imagination.” In addition to her work as My Brightest Diamond, Worden has collaborated and performed with various musicians, artists and filmmakers, including Matthew Barney, Sufjan Stevens, Bryce and Aaron Dressner (The National), The Decemberists, Bon Iver, David Byrne, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Laurie Anderson, Matthew Ritchie, Murat Eyuboglu, Brooklyn Rider and yMusic, among others. My Brightest Diamond’s new EP, None More Than You, is out now on Asthmatic Kitty Records and can be heard in full exclusively at Consequence of Sound. Already receiving widespread acclaim, The New York Times praises, “Shara Worden, the operatically trained singer at the core of My Brightest Diamond, has a feeling for both the grandeur and the grain, building every sweeping gesture in her music out of a swarm of small details,” while Consequence of Sound asserts, “…the music is as always funneled into the ambitious, layered arrangements of My Brightest Diamond.”. Produced by Mason Jar Music, the video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLa7TgaEEAE) was filmed at Glenwood Power Station in Yonkers, NY and chronicles the band’s run-in with local police. Following the EP release, Worden’s forthcoming full-length album, This is My Hand, will be released September 16 on Asthmatic Kitty Records. The album features ten new songs, including the first single “Pressure,” which recently premiered at NPR Music. Of the song, NPR Music praises, “…a stirring song powered by an incredible drumline…one of the most powerful and dramatic voices of the past decade,” while Stereogum proclaims, “…‘Pressure’ is something to be reckoned with. Filled with an army of percussive sounds from big drums to twinkling bells along with shrieking brass and crushing synths, it’s a huge production, but it all sounds small compared to Worden’s operatic voice.” For more information, visit www.mybrightestdiamond.com. The Eastern Michigan University Choral Department and the Michigan American Choral Directors Association are so pleased to welcome you to Sing for Justice, Michigan! Music has always been way for people to express themselves and the call for justice is not new to our age. We each understand that the arts have a role to play, and that is why we are here. To understand and to maximize that role is critical to the artist and we are here to discuss the intersection of arts and justice issues. While we have differences among us, the arts can be a common ground for people of myriad backgrounds, whether those variations be political, religious, cultural, or otherwise. Today we celebrate these differences and we gather to examine how we can help inspire others to celebrate them, as well. EMU and ACDA-MI are thrilled to host renowned composer and arranger Stacey Gibbs, singer-songwriter Shara Nova from the band My Brightest Diamond, and a variety of other presenters and performing ensembles as they seek to find ways to use the arts for justice issues.

  • A Scene Without a Name: Indie Classical and American New Music in the Twenty-First Century
A SCENE WITHOUT A NAME: INDIE CLASSICAL AND AMERICAN NEW MUSIC IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY William Robin A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Music. Chapel Hill 2016 Approved by: Mark Katz Andrea Bohlman Mark Evan Bonds Tim Carter Benjamin Piekut © 2016 William Robin ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT WILLIAM ROBIN: A Scene Without a Name: Indie Classical and American New Music in the Twenty-First Century (Under the direction of Mark Katz) This dissertation represents the first study of indie classical, a significant subset of new music in the twenty-first century United States. The definition of “indie classical” has been a point of controversy among musicians: I thus examine the phrase in its multiplicity, providing a framework to understand its many meanings and practices. Indie classical offers a lens through which to study the social: the web of relations through which new music is structured, comprised in a heterogeneous array of actors, from composers and performers to journalists and publicists to blog posts and music venues. This study reveals the mechanisms through which a musical movement establishes itself in American cultural life; demonstrates how intermediaries such as performers, administrators, critics, and publicists fundamentally shape artistic discourses; and offers a model for analyzing institutional identity and understanding the essential role of institutions in new music. Three chapters each consider indie classical through a different set of practices: as a young generation of musicians that constructed itself in shared institutional backgrounds and performative acts of grouping; as an identity for New Amsterdam Records that powerfully shaped the record label’s music and its dissemination; and as a collaboration between the ensemble yMusic and Duke University that sheds light on the twenty-first century status of the new-music ensemble and the composition PhD program.
