The NUM is pleased to announce expanded program during this year’s Summer School for those interested in Mongolian Studies. Various themes are explored at an advanced academic level through a combination of practical field experience and training. Summer school on Mongolian language and culture

Duration: 3 weeks

Introduction

Students live in a Ger, Mongolian traditional accommodation in historical and beautiful place of Ulaanbaatar’s outskirts. And from an experienced Mongolian language teacher, the students receive language training and learn about Mongolia, no prior experience necessary. Students can experience Mongolian culture first-hand: traditions, religion, and nomadic herding lifestyle, the Mongolian major summer holiday “Naadam”, horse racing, wrestling, archery, production of milk products, national songs and music. Students have opportunities to travel on their own throughout Mongolia.

Department of Archaeology and Anthropology, NUM hosts Summer School in Archaeology and Anthropology to provide international students to work together with their Mongolian colleagues in fieldwork for new experience, knowledge, and insights. It aims: - To broaden your understanding of traditional culture of Mongolian nomads through the study of history and ancient and contemporary culture of Mongols and archaeological monuments from different historical period of Mongolia. - To obtain excellent experience in archaeological excavation of pre-historical and historical monuments in East Mongolia Through this course we seek to promote international academic and scientific exchange and collaboration in Anthropology and Archaeology and Mongolian studies.

This is extremely interesting and challenging experience: Taking part in everyday life of Mongolian nomads, Training your powers of observation, orientation, Reading a compass, digging, keeping notes, hiking in a beautiful country, Finding and recording artifacts and features, Communication via satellites, Mastering photography, Using global post, drawing maps, getting dirty and having fun!

Accommodation and Work Environment

Students must be prepared to live and work in a field camp, sleep in tents, share camp chores and maintenance, and engage in strenuous outdoor activities. The chores will include cooking, clean-up, and general maintenance of the field facilities. Outdoor activities will include hiking to survey quads and archaeological site locations. Students will be responsible for excavating, carrying heavy loads, and processing field collections.

Personal Supplies

Students in the course should arrive prepared for fieldwork and camping. Critical items include a tent, good sleeping bag, rain gear, hiking boots, grubby clothes, toiletries, hat, and a camera. Your field equipment kit should contain a watch, compass, protractor, pencils and pens, and you should have your personal backpack, a portable water container, toilet paper, and insect repellant. The program will provide cooking Ger, food, equipment, and transportation during the field experience. A complete list of personal supplies will be furnished upon registration for the course.

Tuition and Fees Summer Field school fees include all program related expenses: tuition fee, in-country transportation, accommodation and home stay. The tuition fee for the course in 2014 is 1500 USD and it does not include: costs associated with passports and other travel documents; international airfare to and from Ulaanbaatar a visa fee and visa extension fee; costs associated with travel after the end of the season and likewise; personal expenses such as purchase, entertainment and sightseeing, insurance premiums etc. For more information please contact:

AIRPORT PICK UP Each school can arrange pick up at Chinggis Khaan international airport and transport you to your accommodation. On June 24, I arrived at the Chinggis Khaan Airport and at that moment I experienced the culture of Mongolia. Most of the local people outside of the airport wore traditional Mongolian clothing and we could not understand the language that they spoke.

These programs have two parts, one is the Mining Camp, and the other is the Language and Culture Camp.

Mining Camp - from June 26-29, eleven people including teachers, the bus driver and students traveled 16 hours south from the city of Ulaanbaatar to the Oyu Tolgoi mine in Umnugovi province. This trip made a big impression on me because of our car broke down in the Gobi. This problem was solved efficiently and positively. In this camp we visited two mining sites. They have perfect proportion and are completely equip with a library, bank, a hospital, massage room and gymnasium.

Language and Culture Camp - July 1-10, ten people including teachers, bus driver and students spent 10 days living on the steppe in Saikhan Som, the hometown of one of our teacher. His family was very nice and hospitable to us. In these 10 days, I had a very really profound experience living in the Mongolian countryside and experienced many things for my first time. It was the first time that I was not able to bathe for 10 days, the first time milking livestock, the first time collecting wood in the forest, the first time drinking airag. We also went to a natural mineral river and saw Deer Stone Monuments. The teacher took us to see the local “Naadam Festival.” In this trip we learned a little of the Mongolian language.

Finally, when we returned to Ulaanbaatar; we went to the opening ceremony of “Naadam” a traditional festival in Mongolia. This festival had three games: wrestling, horse racing and archery. Mongolians celebrated this festival beautifully and we had a great time. Last but not least, I truly enjoyed this excellent trip and I am looking forward to returning to Mongolia again in the near future.

Summer school in Mongolia The Summer School organized by the National University of Mongolia has been an exceptional experience for me. I was pleasantly surprised by the care all the organizational staff were giving to us, keeping an eye on us and ensuring we felt cozy all the time. In the first week of our stay, we had a chance to travel to the Gobi desert and see its overwhelming vastness and unspoilt nature as well as evidence of the rapidly developing mining sector. The size of the mining operations made a big impression on me and inspired me to find out more about its prospects for the Mongolian economy in the long run as a part of my academic research. During the other half of the Summer School we explored the Northern part of Mongolia and stayed at our teacher’s home in the countryside. We lived in a traditional ger, learned Mongolian, did our homework on top of a nearby hill and could try just about anything that belonged to the herders life such as herding animals on a horse, milking cows, preparing traditional Mongolian meals or helping out with baby horses. We also took part in the Naadam ceremony in Saikhan Som, Bulgan province and traveled to see mystical healing springs in the area and explore yet another part of the region. After we returned to Ulaanbaatar, we visited the state Naadam festival and then departed to spend the last day in the beautiful Terelj National Park. Since I intended to spend some more time in Mongolia after the Summer School was over, I met with our teacher in the country side again and together we set off on a horseback trip in the Saikhan Som region. We spent six days in the saddle and discovered some of the most magnificent places I have ever seen, looking even more charming from horseback. We were warmly welcome by the local people and I had plenty of time to practice my Mongolian and indulge in the breathtaking green-blue sceneries. The Mongolian experience, be it the Summer School, my classmates whom I consider very dear friends or the country as a whole have left an indelible footprint in me and I certainly hope to return to Mongolia.

One of the most precious times in my life.

On July 24, 2013, I arrived at the Chinggis Khan Airport. This was my first time traveling to Mongolia and learning about Mongolian culture. Everything was very fresh and new to me at that time, some people were wearing traditional clothing and speaking Mongolian, which is unfamiliar to me in my home. Hence, from the first time that I arrived in Ulaanbaatar, I started to feel truly interested in this society and really wanted to get closer to this country and its culture. Meanwhile, I felt that I made the right decision to choose a program that brought me to such a special country. After 19 days, I felt so satisfied at the end of the program and with what I learned during the time that I spent in Mongolia proved that I knew that I chose the right program, which I will treasure for the rest of my life. During this summer school program, which is focused on the subject of Mongolian Language and Mongolian’s mining economy through the National University of Mongolia, we were introduced to the mining industry in Mongolia and the alphabet and grammar of the Mongolian language. We learned how the mining economy is helping to construct and develop the Mongolian economy. For instance, one private mining company has attempted to create the perfect living conditions for workers, including restaurants, library, café, apartment and clinics. More importantly, which made a deep impression on me, is that the company is also trying to help society and trying their best to be environmental friendly. For example, they built a school and kindergarten in the Gobi area and they try to conserve water by using a steam technique and they attempt to recycle as much water as possible.

However, what make me really love into this country and the culture was the time period that our teacher brought us to his hometown to stay in a Mongolian ger with his family in Saikhan som. Our teacher’s family lives on steppe and they herd horses, cows and sheep in the traditional Mongolian style. It was my first time staying in a Mongolian ger with real herders for ten days to experience the lifestyle of herders. Over the course of ten days, we learned Mongolian grammar and practiced it daily. We helped their family milk the cows and take care of the colts. I even helped one of the young herders herd the sheep and goats.

12 National University of Mongolia Summer School Programs 2014 Meanwhile, we also went to the nearby city to attend the opening ceremony of the regional Naadam festival, which is fascinating and interesting. During the festival, we learned the spiritual aspect of Mongolians, which are wise, strong and brave characteristics. There are three kinds of competitions in the festival, wrestling, archery and horse racing, which represents the above three characteristics that Mongolian people admire. In addition to the Naadam festival, we also went to the natural mineral river near the Khanui resort. This is also my first time to see a cold spring and see a lake on the steppe grasslands. It was amazing to see such clear and fresh water is so clear and fresh as I am from a coastal city. When we started to get back to Ulaanbaatar from Saikhan som, over the course of my stay, I learned about the traditional living and working style of herders, their daily routine and cooking style, their worldviews and their customs in treating others and interpersonal relations. My biggest gains from this society were to understand normal people’s attitude towards the world and their lives in the countryside. Mongolian people, especially the herder family I meet in Saikhan som, inspires me to live and study with bravery and strong will.

When I arrived in Ulaanbaatar at the end of the program, I realized that I really appreciated this program because it helped me to have a once in a lifetime chance to experience a real Mongolian herders’ life and make friends with them and talk to them deeply. At that time, I did not feel only like a visiting student, but rather like a normal person living in real Mongolia.

I would like to talk about my impression of the summer school. Actually, there are so many things that I remember about last summer. For example, the national Naadam festival, the dinners cooked by the eejee (host mother), Ganbaatar and Eric fixing the car, the very, very touching morin khuur music played by the children during the country Naadam, the national park in Gobi, horse riding, and working together with the herdsmen … etc. The memories are so beautiful. It was a great opportunity for me to attend the fantastic summer school program in Mongolia. Prior to my summer school experience at the National University of Mongolia, I did not have a clear idea about the mystery country called Mongolia. After enjoying this program I really have a deep impression of its history, scenery and culture.

The main purpose of this program is to teach students introductory Mongolian Language and culture also to introduce students to the mining industry in Mongolia. We learned language both though lectures and by living with a local family. Through the lecture given by the teacher we learned basic grammar rules in Mongolian and did some practice on writing and reading. The more interesting experience was that we lived with the teacher’s family for almost ten days! We communicated with his family members in Mongolian and we learned more daily expressions and greeting phrases, which are really useful in Mongolia. Actually also as part of the cultural course, we learned herding techniques such as milking horses and cows, collecting wood in the forest, and learning to make traditional food. In addition we visited a few tourist sites. We briefly learned the history of Mongolia from the National History Museum and we learned about the natural geography by visiting a hot spring in Saikhan. Learning experientially through travelling is really enjoyable and allowed us to learn a more casual way. We visited mining sites and at the largest one called, “Energy Resource,” we saw the system by which coal is extracted and produced into a fuel without smoke. It can even be created into recyclable products! This represents the advanced technology of mining and the attention given to environmental protection.

14 National University of Mongolia Summer School Programs 2014 Through the summer school I gained a deeper understanding of Mongolia. In Ulaanbaatar, I saw the modern development of this country, especially through the Naadam Festival. I experienced the positivity of their summer celebration and how much Mongolians love their motherland. In the countryside areas, I enjoyed the natural scenery with the blue sky and the traditional style of life.

Through the summer school I built a lot of relationships with the local people. I truly felt the kindness and hospitality of all of them. Mongolian people are really enthusiastic to spend time with tourists like us.

All in all, I really love Mongolia. Maybe I will come back to this amazing country in the near future to experience my passion for it again.
