Coleman, IV This dissertation analyzes the process of state building by Qing imperial representatives and Republican state officials in Batang, a predominantly ethnic Tibetan region located in southwestern Sichuan Province. Utilizing Chinese provincial and national level archival materials and Tibetan language works, as well as French and American missionary records and publications, it explores how Chinese state expansion evolved in response to local power and has three primary arguments. First, by the mid-nineteenth century, Batang had developed an identifiable structure of local governance in which native chieftains, monastic leaders, and imperial officials shared power and successfully fostered peace in the region for over a century. Second, the arrival of French missionaries in Batang precipitated a gradual expansion of imperial authority in the region, culminating in radical Qing military intervention that permanently altered local understandings of power. A study on thermal history not only plays an important role on analysis the tectonic origin of the Qaidam basin, revealing the forming mechanism and uplift history of Tibetan plateau, but also is available to provide scientific evidence on oil & gas resources appraising. Using balanced cross-sections technique, and combination of analysis of apatite fission track ages with modeling of fission track length distribution, it was infered that eastern Qaidam basin experienced significant tectonic movement in the early Jurassic movement (~200 Ma), which caused the carboniferous uplift and denudation, the geological movement in late Cretaceous, characterized by stretch in the early and the northeast-southwest extrusion in late; Himalayan movement in multi-stage development in the eastern Qaidam basin, Mainly divided into the early Himalayan movement (41.1~33.6 Ma) and the late Himalayan movement (9.6~7.1 Ma, 2.9~1.8 Ma), which large-scale orogeny caused pre-existing faults reactivated in late Himalayan movement. -

SMIP13 Seminar Proceedings OBSERVATIONS FROM THE APRIL 20, 2013 LUSHAN COUNTY, YA’AN CITY, SICHUAN PROVINCE, CHINA EARTHQUAKE Marshall Lew AMEC Environment & Infrastructure, Inc. Los Angeles, California Abstract The April 20, 2013 Lushan earthquake followed the 2008 Great Wenchuan earthquake by almost five years. Although the rupture also started in the Longmenshan fault zone, the Lushan earthquake is not an aftershock. Although similar damage and disruptions to infrastructure and society occurred, it was of a smaller scale and not unexpected due to the short time for the lessons from Wenchuan to be applied. There were some examples of lessons learned and the strong motion dataset obtained in this event will prove valuable in assessing how effective the actions taken have been. The visual observations were made on May 27 and 28, 2013 in Lushan. Introduction On April 20, 2013, at 8:02 am (Beijing Time), an earthquake occurred in Lushan County of Ya’an City in Sichuan Province in southwestern China. The epicenter was located at 30o 17’ 02” N and 102o 57’ 22” E, about 120 km from the major city of Chengdu; see Figure 1. Ya’an City is a prefecture level city in the western part of Sichuan Province and has a population of about 1.5 million people and is the location of one of China’s main centers for the protection of the endangered giant panda. Sichuan Province is known as the “Province of Abundance.” The province is a leading agricultural region of China and the province is also very rich in mineral resources, including large natural gas reserves. -

Among the multiple varieties spoken by inhabitants living in Lhagang Town, the Shingyag dialect is spoken in the south-western part of the town. It is somewhat different from other Amdo varieties spoken in Lhagang Town in the phonetic and phonological aspects. This article provides a word list with ca. 1500 words of Shingnyag Tibetan. Introduction This article aims to provide a word list (including ca. 1500 entries) with a phonological sketch of Shingnyag Tibetan, spoken in Xiya [Shing-nyag]1 Hamlet, located in the south-western part of Tagong [lHa-sgang] Town (henceforth Lhagang Town), Kangding [Dar-mdo] Municipality, Ganzi [dKar-mdzes] Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, China (see Figure 1). Lhagang Town is in the easternmost part of Khams based on the traditional Tibetan geography, however, it is inhabited by many Tibetans whose mother tongue is Amdo Tibetan.2 Referring to Qu and Jin (1981), we can see that it is already known that Amdo-speaking Tibetans live in Suzuki, Hiroyuki and Sonam Wangmo. -

Hill Harvard University Paul Benedict (1972: 34) proposed that Tibeto-Burman medial *-wa- regularly leads to -o- in Old Tibetan, but that initial *wa did not undergo this change. Because Old Tibetan has no initial w-, and several genuine words have the rhyme -wa, this proposal cannot be accepted. In particular, the intial of the Old Tibetan word vwa ‘fox’ is v- and not w-. འ Keywords: Old Tibetan, Tibeto-Burman, phonology. 1. INTRODUCTION The Tibetan word vwa ‘fox’ has received a certain amount of attention for being an exception to the theory that Tibeto-Burman *wa yields o in Tibetan1. The first formulation of this sound law known to me is Laufer’s statement “Das Barmanische besitzt nämlich häufig die Verbindung w+a, der ein tibetisches [sic] o oder u entspricht [Burmese namely frequently has the combination w+a, which corresponds to a Tibetan o or u]” (Laufer 1898/1899: part III, 224; 1976: 120). Laufer’s generalization was based in turn upon cognate sets assembled by Bernard Houghton (1898). In the history of this relationship, a cyclical pattern of Chinese attempts, both violently assimilative and subtly corrosive, to control Tibetan Buddhism and a multifaceted Tibetan resistance to defend their religious heritage, will be revealed. This article will develop a security-based logic for that cyclical dynamic. For these purposes, a two-level analytical framework will be applied. First, the framework of the insecurity dilemma will be used to draw the broad outlines of the historical cycles of repression and resistance. However, the insecurity dilemma does not look inside the concept of security and it is not helpful to establish how Tibetan Buddhism became a security issue in the first place and continues to retain that status. The theory of securitisation is best suited to perform this analytical task. As such, the cycles of Chinese repression and Tibetan resistance fundamentally originate from the incessant securitisation of Tibetan Buddhism by the Chinese state and its apparatchiks. The paper also considers the why, how, and who of this securitisation, setting the stage for a future research project taking up the analytical effort to study the why, how and who of a potential desecuritisation of all things Tibetan, including Tibetan Buddhism, and its benefits for resolving the protracted Sino- Tibetan conflict. -

A 3585-Year Ring-Width Dating Chronology of Qilian Juniper from the Northeastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau
IAWA Journal, Vol. 30 (4), 2009: 379–394 A 3585-YEAR RING-WIDTH DATING CHRONOLOGY OF QILIAN JUNIPER FROM THE NORTHEASTERN QINGHAI-TIBETAN PLATEAU Xuemei Shao1 *, Shuzhi Wang2, Haifeng Zhu1, Yan Xu1, Eryuan Liang3, Zhi-Yong Yin4, Xinguo Xu5 and Yongming Xiao5 SUMMARY This article documents the development of a precisely dated and well- replicated long regional tree-ring width dating chronology for Qilian juniper (Juniperus przewalskii Kom.) from the northeastern Qinghai- Tibetan Plateau. It involves specimens from 22 archeological sites, 24 living tree sites, and 5 standing snags sites in the eastern and northeastern Qaidam Basin, northwestern China. The specimens were cross-dated suc- cessfully among different groups of samples and among different sites. Based on a total of 1438 series from 713 trees, the chronology covers 3585 years and is the longest chronology by far in China. Comparisons with chronologies of the same tree species about 200 km apart suggest that this chronology can serve for dating purposes in a region larger than the study area. This study demonstrates the great potential of Qilian juniper for dendrochronological research.
