Winchester Over 55’s Forum

The Winchester District Over 55’s Forum is an independent organisation run by local volunteers whose aim is to give a collective voice to older people:  To influence decision makers on matters that impact on the daily lives of people aged over 55.  To help to combat disadvantage amongst older people and provide a platform where older people can speak about the issues that affect their health and well being.

The Forum responds to local consultations on matters that affect older people. The Forum meets monthly and welcomes new members and enquiries. It offers a varied program of activities including a range of information events.

Winchester Discovery Centre Jewry Street, Winchester, SO23 8SB. Knit and Knatter An informal knitting activity which takes place in the café area. Join enthusiastic knitters and exchange tips, learn new techniques and make new friends: fortnightly on Tuesdays 10am – 12 pm and Monday 5:00pm – 6:45 pm Craft Group A informal craft activity group which takes place in the café area. Join enthusiastic crafters who interested in activities such as embroidery, patchwork, sewing , card making or knitting an opportunity for participants to share tips, learn new techniques and meet other people with similar interests.

The Discovery Centre also offers a variety of short courses including creative arts activities, introduction to computer classes and photography.

Aims and objectives: To encourage the practice of Fine Arts in the Winchester area, particularly amongst those who paint as a hobby.

(E) Southern Book Crafts Club The club is a self help group of amateur bookbinders who meet weekly to carry out book binding and restoration projects. Members support one another by sharing their experience as well as some materials and larger equipment. Newcomers to bookbinding are offered a progressive programme of projects.

(E) Cercle Français de Winchester Mr Phil Waterton Honorary Secretary Peter Symonds College, Owens Road Winchester Hampshire SO22 6RX The aim of the Cercle Français de Winchester is to advance the education of the general public in the French language, literature, history and culture. This is achieved by arranging lectures in French and social events. An understanding of French is desirable.

Special needs are catered for at most meetings. Fees: Single £14 Couple £22 per annum. Non-members welcome. A guest fee of £4 is levied but this is refunded on joining. The group usually meets at the Science Lecture Theatre at Peter Symonds College, SO22 6RX, Winchester. Lectures are held on Wednesday evenings and start at 7.30 pm.

Our membership is mainly made up individuals or families living in the Hampshire area with some Scandinavian connection.

You do not have to be a Scandinavian or live in Hampshire to become a member. All you need is an interest in Scandinavia and its culture.

The activities of the Society is mainly aimed at maintaining the Scandinavian traditions and promoting our cultural inheritance including sharing this with our children and friends.

Civil Service Pensioners Alliance (Winchester area) The Group meets on the 1st Monday of every month (am) at Badgers Farm Community Centre, Badgers Farm Road, Winchester, Hampshire, SO22 4QB. http://www.bfobrca.com/BFOBRCA/bfobrca_home.html

The club usually has a speaker at each meeting followed by a short meeting and a light lunch and occasional trips out. Membership is open to pensioners who are in receipt of benefits from: 1. The Principal Civil Service Pension Scheme (PCSPS) 2. Pension schemes analogous to the PCSPS operated by fringe bodies such as Research Councils, or by other Non-departmental Public Bodies 3. A pension scheme operated by a Civil Service trade union

Membership is also open to active and former members of such pension schemes, who remain entitled to benefits and are within ten years of their pension age. Fees - Individual membership is £1.00 per month if paid by deduction from pension (or £12.00 per year if paid by direct debit).

(E) Winchester Photographic Society The Society runs monthly meetings September – May Tuesdays 7:30pm – 10 pm at the Discovery Centre, Jewry Street, Winchester.

Workshops and Panel Group meetings are held in Littleton Millennium Hall from 7:30 pm to 10 pm. Participation is limited to fully paid members of the Society only and advanced booking is advisable. There is a small charge for the evening to cover overheads: usually £2.

Hampshire Genealogical Society (Winchester area local branch)

Meetings include talks by people knowledgeable in aspects of genealogy - typical subjects include the Poor Law, census returns and military ancestors. We also have Members' evenings where we exchange experiences and show each other documents, photographs and memorabilia.

Access The hall has 4 disabled parking spaces reserved by the entrance to the hall and easy wheelchair access to the whole building. There is a disabled toilet. The society meets at 7:30 pm on the 3rd Wednesday of each month in the Millennium Memorial Hall, Littleton, SO22 6QL

Allotments

Allotments in Winchester are mainly run by two independent societies, the Winchester and District Allotment Holders Society and the Winchester New Allotment Holders Society. It is important to contact the correct Society, depending on where the allotment is situated.

(E) Winchester Horticultural Society The Society holds monthly lectures by gardening/plant/horticultural experts. Garden visits, coach outings and social events. Annual subscription in 2010 cost £10.00. The clubs meet at 7:30pm at the Winchester Club on the 2nd Wednesday of every month. Hobbies

The Winchester Model Aeroplane Club The Club provides members with the facilities to fly radio controlled and control line model aircraft in mid Hampshire. The Club is flying orientated with the emphasis on relaxed sport flying. There are usually only three or four competitive events per year organised well in advance ensuring that restriction to individual flying is minimised. Club meetings are not organised on a regular basis but when arranged are held in a country pub just south of Winchester. A family day is usually organised in mid summer with a barbeque.

(E) Machine Knitting Club (Winchester) The Club meets from 8:00pm – 10:00 pm on the 2nd Thursday of every month. They hold lectures, demonstrations, discussions on machine knitting. To foster interest in and increase knowledge of techniques of machine knitting participants must have an interest in knitting and in the design of garments. There is an annual fee of £10 plus £2 per meeting. The Club meets at Littleton Millennium Memorial Hall, Hall Way, Littleton, Winchester, SO22 6QL.

(E) Friends of King Alfred Buses (Winchester) Aims and objectives: To preserve buses and coaches of the former King Alfred Motor Services that operated from 1920 until 1973 and to promote education in Hampshire’s transport heritage. Services and activities offered: Bus preservation group is dedicated to the memory of King Alfred Motor Services (1921 – 1973). 16 buses owned dating from 1931 to 1970, some still awaiting restoration. Buses are used for special events and members' trips. The main event is an annual running day (usually on 1st January) when preserved buses operate over the old routes of the 1950's and 1960's. Special needs are catered for: Wheelchair access and disabled toilet in the meeting hall. It is not possible for wheelchairs to get on the busses, due to limited access. Charges: £10 annual subscription.

(E) Winchester Railway Modellers WRM has just under 30 members with a wide range of interests in model railways, from GWR to Virgin Trains, scratch building locomotives to DCC operation. They meet every Wednesday from 7:30pm to 9:30pm.The club room (a large barn big enough to take 3 layouts and 30 club members) is based just outside Winchester.

Singing Groups/Choirs

(E) Compton & Shawford Festival Choir Compton & Shawford Festival Choir gives amateur singers the opportunity to perform with professional conductors and soloists together with other Festival Choirs in venues such as Winchester Cathedral or Romsey Abbey at the annual Winchester and County Music Festival in May. They also hold a concert in December. The Choir meets on Monday evenings at the Shawford Parish Hall situated adjacent to the Bridge Hotel and the railway station. They sing mainly from the classical choral repertoire. Members of all ages are welcome. Charges: Annual membership fee – details available on request. Times: Monday evenings 7:30pm for a 7:45pm start until 9.30pm, September to May.

(E) Ashton Singers The Ashton Singers is a chamber choir of about 34 singers, based in Winchester. They aim to perform to a high standard choral music from all periods, but specialise in Renaissance and Baroque music. They also sing at services in Winchester Cathedral for a day each year and in other cathedrals from time to time. Admission to the Ashton Singers is by audition. Members are normally good sight readers and must have suitable voices for a small choir.

The rehearsal venue has wheelchair access and the group aims to support members with special needs according to their needs. Members pay a termly subscription and may occasionally be required to buy their own music. They rehearse in Winchester on Wednesday evenings.

Afternoon Sing-Song with Natural Voice Natural Voice Sing –Sing Is led by Sandra Thibault who is a member of the associated Natural Voice Practioners' Network. This is a weekly choir, which is open to everyone, even those who think they can't sing! The group does not perform to the public, it meets on Thursdays 1:30pm to 3:00 pm. (E) Opera Dever The Opera Dever was formed a few years ago to give local singers the opportunity to extend their repertoire and gain performance experience. The majority of the group are enthusiastic amateurs, others have professional background, the emphasis is enjoyment. They aim to put on two performances a year, most semi-staged.

Open to anyone over 16 years of age with reasonable musical skills. Special needs catered for but no disabled toilet. They operate as a co- operative, splitting the cost of the musical director’s fees between them. The usual cost is £60 a head per term. They meet on alternate Mondays (weekly in month preceding performance) from 6:30pm - 9:30pm

(E) Tudor Roses Ladies Harmony Chorus This women only group has approximately 40 members who enjoy singing in a 4 part harmony chorus, performing regularly to the local community. They hold weekly rehearsals learning the art of harmony singing and a variety of sing outs and taking part in competitions. Charges: Monthly fee varies depending on the individual’s age. They meet on Monday evenings between 7:30 pm and 10 pm at All Saints Church Hall, Petersfield Road, Highcliffe, Winchester, SO23 0JD. (There is disabled access to rehearsal room).

The Waynflete Singers The group is an amateur choir that performs regularly in Winchester Cathedral. The choir currently has about 120 singers. They have built up an extensive repertoire ranging from early music to challenging late twentieth century works. Website http://www.waynflete.hampshire.org.uk/

(E) The Winchester Operatic Society The Society stages light opera, musicals and operatic productions. They also organise many social events for members and their friends throughout the year. Auditions take place before each production. These auditions are advertised in the local press as well as the "WOS Gazette" and on this website.

They usually perform two productions each year, one in the spring and one in the autumn. Rehearsals take place at 7:45pm on Mondays and Wednesdays at Western School, Browning Drive, Winchester SO22 5AR. Not the entire cast is called for each rehearsal. Productions run for one week.

Theatre The Chesil Theatre Chesil Street, Winchester, SO23 0HU.

The Theatre is the home of the Winchester Dramatic Society which celebrated its centenary in 1993 and performs as the Chesil Theatre Company. Plays are performed throughout the year and there are many opportunities for volunteering in a variety of roles.

The Theatre Royal Winchester Address: Jewry Street, Winchester, SO23 8SB.

Access: The Theatre can accommodate up to 7 wheelchairs in the stalls. According to the terms of the license, wheelchair users must be accompanied during a performance. Their friend’s ticket will be available at a 50% discount. An induction loop system for the hearing impaired is available and sign language interpreted performances whenever possible. There is lift access to all levels and assistance dogs are welcome in the building.

Bowling

Riverside Indoor Bowling Club Location: Gordon Road (Rear of Leisure centre), Winchester, Hampshire, SO22 7DD. The Bowling Club has six rinks (lane/playing surfaces) a bar and catering. The bowling centre is open 9.00am-11.00pm daily with limited opening for June- July. It is closed in August. Cycling

(E) Cyclists' Touring Club (CTC) The CTC is the UK's national cycling organization with a particular focus on recreational and utility cycling. It has been protecting and promoting the rights of cyclists since 1878. It is a not-for-profit organisation that is funded by members and donations. CTC Winchester organises the following types of on-road rides. For full details, see the current events’ programme. Easy rides (half day afternoon ride or a short day ride) at a leisurely pace on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month. Intermediate rides are on either the 3rd or the 5th Saturday of each month. Distance about 50 miles at a pace midway between the easy rides. Sunday rides: Ride every Sunday at a faster pace, for either a half day or a full day. The full day ride incorporates a half day group who cycle with group for part of morning, normally with a stop for coffee and arrive back in Winchester by lunchtime. Wednesday evening rides (April to September inclusive): Rides are about 25 miles with an optional pub stop. Please note that lights are required.

Cricket

(E) St Cross Symondians Cricket Club The Club states that its aim is to provide cricket for everyone in and around the Winchester area, regardless of age or ability. There is limited access to the pavilion. Activities are as follows:  Senior Cricket in Southern Premier and Hampshire leagues (Mondays evenings in the summer)  Disabled cricket (learning disabilities)  Ladies cricket  5 senior men’s sides  1 senior women’s side Matches are played at various levels on most days during the summer. Canoeing

Winchester and District Canoe Club Meet at River Park Leisure centre, Gordon Road, Winchester, Hampshire SO23 7DD.

Winchester and District Canoe Club (WDCC) is a small, friendly and family based club. It is a multi-discipline club with members competing at all levels of slalom and marathon. Members have interests in sea kayaking, surf kayaking, open canoeing and placid water social paddling. The water is safe for beginners and suitable for everyone nearly all year round. They have a range of boats available for members to use. They meet every Sunday morning between 10:00 am and 12:00 pm at the Club House, which is just behind River Park Leisure Centre in the centre of Winchester. They also meet on Tuesday nights (even during the winter!) from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Non-members are required to pay £2.50 for each session for insurance purposes. This charge is covered by membership costs if they join.

Currently being run at the following venues please look at each section for more details  Kings Worthy Tubbs Hall (SO23 7PJ) – Jazz / Modern Dancing class Tuesday 7pm to 9pm  Otterbourne Village Hall (SO21 2ET) – Tea Dance Club Tuesdays 2pm – 4pm; Sequence Dance Club Thursdays 7:45pm - 10:30 pm  The Winchester Club – hold tea dances on Wednesdays 2:30pm – 4:30 pm.  The Discovery Centre, Jewry Street (SO23 8SB) and River Park Leisure Centre, Gordon Road (SO23 7DD) run Zamba classes.  The Tower Arts Centre (SO22 5PW, see adult education section) also often runs various dance classes.

Keep Fit

Later Life Classes Keep Fit class These classes are specifically aimed at the over 55’s age group and delivered primarily from Sheltered Housing Schemes. The classes are accessible to members of the public. A typical session will be based around taking part in a number of gentle warm-up body movements which then lead to a mixture of soft and easy seated and standing exercises based around improving balance and coordination. The first session is free of charge and from then on cost £2.50 a session. Classes take place in a variety of areas including Colden Common, Kings Worthy and various venues in Winchester City.

Riding

Winchester Riding Club The Winchester Riding Club aims to cater for all horse owners who live and keep horses within an 18-20 mile radius of Winchester and ride principally for pleasure. Members of all ages and abilities are welcomed and catered for. It is not affiliated to the British Horse Society (BHS) and does not become involved in team competitions or training for BHS or other riding club tests.

Run in Run in England is an England Athletics community based running project. It aims to give everyone an opportunity to get active and begin running for fun and fitness. Supported by Sport England, qualified Leaders are delivering community running groups across the whole of England. Those who take part can enjoy getting fit whilst having fun and making new friends in a safe, friendly environment.

A local 'Run in England' beginners’ running course consists of a proper warm- up and cool-down with walking and running drills in between and is aimed at complete beginners. The 'Run in England' improvers’ running course is similar in its content but is aimed at runners who are already capable of running three miles or more.

Littleton

Littleton Bowling Club The Club enters teams in the all District Ladies’ and Men’s Leagues and in the Whitchurch League (Mixed) – a number of their members also play at County level. Christ Church – Lunch Club Location: Christchurch Road, Winchester SO23 9SR. The Lunch Club welcomes retired folk of any age at 12.30 pm in the Simeon Room at Christ Church. Some members belong to Christ Church, but many do not, thus providing a rich mix of background and experience.

The meal is prepared and cooked on the premises, and served by a team of volunteers. There is a service of Holy Communion at 11:30 am, and several members like to attend. Transport can usually be arranged and is provided by volunteer drivers (more drivers are always needed). Transport can also be linked to the Communion service.

One Sunday afternoon a month, a volunteer driver collects older guests and takes them to a volunteer's home for tea, talk and companionship. Winchester and District Carers Forum The Forum provides a support network for carers and promotes action to fill gaps in services. The Forum meets once a month and welcomes new members and enquiries.

Winchester Over 55’s Forum The Forum aims to maintain and improve the well-being of all individuals aged 55 and over in Winchester and its District. It aims to listen to and respond to issues that affect older people. It also responds to local consultations on matters that affect older people and provides feedback on policies and procedures that affect older people. The Forum meets monthly and welcomes new members and enquiries. It is currently planning a program of activities including a range of information events and social activities.

(E) Age Concern (Hampshire) Age Concern Hampshire runs Pre-retirement Seminars four times per year with an established customer base of local and, locally based, national employers. An Annual Golf Challenge (involving many of the golf clubs in the County), A Writers’ Competition, Activities Days, a UK online Computer Centre at Winnall Community Centre. Foot Health Clinic - The Foot Health Service has been established by Age Concern Hampshire to provide older people (who do not meet the criteria for free N.H.S. Chiropody Services) with a choice of where they purchase their foot health care. It is non-profit making, but charges a small fee to cover service costs. This is provided at Friarsgate Medical Centre, Winchester on Mondays.

Monday Club A club for people with dementia and their carers to attend. Clients with dementia are invited to take part in organised therapeutic activities while carers may use another area of the venue to chat and support one another. Outings Regular outings to local places of interest including museums, gardens, theatre and boat trips. Outreach Lunch Club An Outreach Lunch Club is run on the first Tuesday of each month for former carers and those who require less support. This is a chance for people to meet and catch up in a warm and friendly environment. Come and enjoy a delicious sandwich lunch. Support Group Lunch Club The Alzheimers Society also runs a Support Group Lunch Club on the third Tuesday of each month for carers and those with dementia. Offering a chance to share experiences, offer advice or just chat! Refreshments and sandwiches are provided. Help with transport if required is available.

The Association provides TV sets for those whose mobility is restricted or who are housebound, TV licenses where there is financial hardship, concerts in ex- service residential and nursing homes, outings, individual respite holidays (with carers if required) and group holidays. They can only assist ex-service personnel who are war pensioners or who are currently suffering from some form of ill-health.

Handyman service The Home Improvement Agency provides a low cost handyman service aimed at older and disabled residents. Message in a Bottle A device devised by the Lions to help emergency services have vital information about a person’s personal and medical details consisting of a small, easily recognisable plastic container with a green cross on it. This is widely used and supported by Ambulance, Police, Fire and Health Professionals. It can be obtained for free from Health Centres and Chemists. If you have difficulties in obtaining a message in a bottle please contact your local Lions Club telephone 0845 833 9502.

The Red Cross Medical Equipment Loan scheme provides help in times of crisis to give short term support which includes the loan of medical equipment. They also sell equipment if people prefer to purchase. Equipment includes walking frames, sticks, commodes, wheelchairs, specialised crockery, feeding utensils, and gardening equipment for people with disabilities.

Dial a Ride The service is a door to door bookable service operating on weekdays (up to 8 days in advance) designed to transport individuals and their carers to a range of destinations in Winchester. It is most useful to people with mobility issues or sensory impairment who find it problematic to use ordinary passenger transport. Users do not need to be registered disabled to use the service.
