In both China and Chinese diasporic communities around the world, education is of utmost importance and is central to childrearing in the family. In this paper, we address one of the most serious resettlement issues that new Chinese immigrants face—children’s education. We examine how receiving contexts matter for parenting, what immigrant parents do to promote their children’s education, and what enables parenting strategies to yield expected outcomes. Our analysis is based mainly on data collected from face-to-face interviews and participant observations in Chinese immigrant communities in Los Angeles and New York in the United States and in Singapore. We find that, despite different contexts of reception, new Chinese immigrant parents hold similar views and expectations on children’s education, are equally concerned about achievement outcomes, and tend to adopt overbearing parenting strategies. We also find that, while the Chinese way of parenting is severely contested in the processes of migration and adaptation, the success in promoting children’s educational excellence involves not only the right set of culturally specific strategies but also tangible support from host-society institutions and familial and ethnic social networks. -

Contact Languages: Ecology and Evolution in Asia
This page intentionally left blank Contact Languages Why do groups of speakers in certain times and places come up with new varieties of languages? What are the social settings that determine whether a mixed language, a pidgin, or a Creole will develop, and how can we under- stand the ways in which different languages contribute to the new grammar? Through the study of Malay contact varieties such as Baba and Bazaar Malay, Cocos Malay, and Sri Lanka Malay, as well as the Asian Portuguese ver- nacular of Macau, and China Coast Pidgin, the book explores the social and structural dynamics that underlie the fascinating phenomenon of the creation of new, or restructured, grammars. It emphasizes the importance and inter- play of historical documentation, socio-cultural observation, and linguistic analysis in the study of contact languages, offering an evolutionary frame- work for the study of contact language formation – including pidgins and Creoles – in which historical, socio-cultural, and typological observations come together. umberto ansaldo is Associate Professor in Linguistics at the University of Hong Kong. He was formerly a senior researcher and lecturer with the Amsterdam Center for Language and Communication at the University of Amsterdam. He has also worked in Sweden and Singapore and conducted fieldwork in China, the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Christmas Island, and Sri Lanka. A NUMERICAL STUDY ON MICROBUBBLE MIXER BY LIN GUO THESIS Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2014 Urbana, Illinois Adviser: Associate Professor Sascha Hilgenfeldt Abstract This text comprises a numerical study of the mixing performance on the micromixer, a device which actuates steady streaming by semi-cylindrical sessile bubble oscillations. The mixer's capability of producing chaotic mixing is confirmed and a numerical simulation that is in good agreement with the experiment is developed, which then leads to the exploration of three mixing schemes. At the beginning, we introduce the experimental configuration of our micromixer, as well as the general framework of computing the asymptotic solution which is later used in numerical simulations. With these fundamentals, we proceed to characterize the efficiency of our mixer, essentially a Hamiltonian dynamical system, using Poincar´esections and the Finite-time Lyapunov exponent. These indicators provide evidence that by properly blinking between different streaming patterns, chaotic-like mixing can be created inside our mixer. The observation made from numerical results that the size of the region that is good for mixing is related to the blinking period is substantiated by a scaling argument. After showing that the micromixer is beneficial for mixing from the perspective of dynam- ical system theory, we then focus on real applications by developing passive scalar simulations that agree with experimental data well. Finally, the establishment of the simulation allows us to explore the efficiencies of three different schemes and to optimize their designs for better mixing. -

Transnational Ireland on Stage: America to Middle East in Three Texts Wei H. Kao Introduction: Between the Local and the Global on the Irish Stage Historically, the comprehensive Anglicisation of Ireland from the early nineteenth century, and the geopolitical location of Ireland in Europe, have laid the foundations for more Irish participation on the world stage. The rapid globalisation process, however, has not fully removed the frustration buried deep in the Irish psyche about the country still being in partition, but it has encouraged many contemporary playwrights to express concerns regarding other areas that are just as troubled as the state of their country, despite the fact that the Northern Ireland issue is not yet fully resolved. It is noteworthy that globalisation, as the continuation of nineteenth- and twentieth-century imperialism in a new form, not only carries forward the exercise of colonial incursion but facilitates the oppressively homogenising effects on the less advantaged Other. This is partly due to the rise of critical theory to ‘productively complicate the nationalist paradigm’ by embarking on transnationalism since the 1970s.1 One consequence of this was to prompt reevaluations of existing cultural productions, thus initiating cross-cultural and interethnic dialogues that had usually been absent in colonial and Eurocentric establishments, and prompting the public to envisage the Other across both real and imagined borders. Even more significantly, the meaning of a text starts to shift if it is studied in an international context, and this applies particularly to a text in which the characters venture into unexplored territories and impel ‘meaning [to] transform as it travels’.2 The transformation of meanings is further accelerated by intercultural encounters that are motivated by globalisation that interconnects individuals and societies around the world. -
