We have all been acquainted with the words "namby pamby". While we are clear that it refers to anything childish or ineffectual, its ancestry is somewhat complex. During the early part of the eighteenth century, Ambrose Philips was a don at St. John's College at Cambridge University. But he also dabbled in poetry. His style was extremely dull and laden with references to the Tory party of Britain. He was assaulted by the writing of Henry Carey, himself a poet and musician, whose major poem was entitled "Sally in the Alley."
