An archive of the complete run of issues of Rock Scene Magazine, accompanied by the original photographs used to produce four issues from 1977. Comprises a virtual who’s who of the music world, with extensive documentation of The Sex Pistols, Patti Smith, The Ramones, The Clash, Blondie, Bryan Ferry, Kiss, Iggy Pop, David Johansen, The Bay City Rollers, and Bruce Springsteen, among other seminal rock musicians. Photographers include well-known music personalities like Bob Gruen, Roberta Bayley, and Donna Santisi, although many other lesser-known or uncredited photographers are also included. Rock Scene was a formative rock and roll publication, which in its own understated way reported the thinking music fan’s transition from the hard rock and stadium rock bands of the mid-1970s into the punk and new wave bands of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Unlike the other 1970s newsstand rock magazines, Rock Scene embraced punk from the beginning and promoted obscure new groups in their “New Bands” section. The magazine’s lifespan from 1973 to 1982 was a glorious time in the music world. This archive contains a complete run of the magazine’s fifty-four issues, along with nearly complete photographic files for four issues: June 1977, July 1977, September 1977 and October 1977. There are a total of approximately 635 stamped / marked photographs and 141 additional uncredited / press photographs. Most of these are 8 X 10 inches, but some are 7 X 10 or 5 X 7 inches. Many photographs have numeric annotations on the edge image corresponding to the page placement in the magazine. Near fine condition overall. SOLD .

Art and music cross-fertilized with a vengeance following a stripped-down, hard-edged, anti- establishment ethos, with some artists plastering city walls with self-designed posters or spray painted monikers, while others commandeered abandoned buildings, turning vacant garages into makeshift theaters for Super 8 film screenings and raucous performances. Many artists found the experimental music scene more vital and conducive to their contrarian ideas than the handful of contemporary art galleries in the city. Artists in turn formed bands, performed in clubs and non- profit art galleries, and self-published their own records and zines while using public access cable channels as a venue for media experiments and cultural debates. Looking at Music: Side 2 is organized by Barbara London, Associate Curator, Department of Media and Performance Art, The Museum of Modern Art, and succeeds Looking at Music (2008), an examination of the interaction between artists and musicians of the 1960s and early 1970s.

Although BTC has been dealing in Counter Cultural material pretty much since we’ve existed as an entity, we’ve never issued a catalog strictly devoted to the subject. When we started in the mid 1980s, some of the “Cultures” whose artifacts we’re now dealing in didn’t even exist. This goes to show, I guess, that the definition of Counter Culture is constantly evolving. I asked Ken Giese on our staff to define Counter Culture in ten seconds. Go! - “Arggghhh, hippies, it was the hippies, it was always the hippies for me!” Similarly incoherent responses were received from others on our staff, although Ashley Wildes well-considered “What?” stands out. Matt Histand probably did best when he said it was “Anything that youth was rebelling against that has since become part of the culture.” Obviously much of one’s perspective on this is or can be generational. And indeed the friction created by the interaction of the generations might actually be the proper definition.

Ptdr ! Hey! Ho! Let's Go: Ramones and the Birth of Punk will open on April 10, 2016, at the Queens Museum in New York. It then moves to Los Angeles on Oct. 21, 2016, where the second part will debut at the GRAMMY Museum in Los Angeles. The two-part exhibition, co-curated by the GRAMMY Museum at L.A. LIVE and the Queens Museum, in collaboration with Ramones Productions Inc., will commemorate the 40th anniversary of the release of the Ramones' 1976 self-titled debut album and will explore the lasting influence the punk rockers had on their hometown, from their start in Queens to their history-making performances at CBGB, highlighting their musical achievements, with a special influence on the dynamic synergy between New York City's music and visual arts scenes in the 1970s and 1980s. • PUNK by Jon Savage I
PUNK By Jon Savage I: INTRO I’m a street-walking cheetah with a heartfull of napalm… It starts with a feeling. I’m the runaway son of the nuclear A-bomb…. A feeling so intense and so out there that it struggles to make itself heard. I am the world’s forgotten boy… These screams of rage fall on deaf ears in the woozy hedonism of the early seventies. The singer is: too dumb, too blank, too violent. A dose of Amphetamine among the Quaaludes. He cuts himself on stage, flings himself into the audience…. Sick boy, sick boy, learning to be cruel… ..trying to get a reaction, any reaction. Anything but this boredom. Anything but this stoner ooze that avoids the issue of what it is to be young, outcast, and ready to murder a world. Is there concrete all around or is it in my head? The bloom is off youth culture as the promises of the sixties fade. The charismatic dark stars of the early seventies, David Bowie, Alice Cooper, catch this mood but by mid decade they are too successful and too old - sixties people themselves – to embody this feeling. They can write as observers but they aren’t inside it. I’m getting tired of being alone…. The secret heart of pop culture shifts from the country to the inner city. This is a dark, dangerous world. It’s a jungle out there. WWW.TEACHROCK.ORG Somethin’ comin’ at me all the time…. But after sundown, when everyone has fled, there is space. The new breed find the feeling in the midst of emptiness.

Punk was to magazines what the stage at CBGB was to music: the gritty, live-wired, throbbing center of the punk universe. Despite its low-rent origins, the mag was an overnight success in the underground music scene, selling out every print run across the US and UK. Every musician who appeared on the cover of Punk became an icon of the era. But Punk not only championed music, it became a launching pad for writers, artists, cartoonists, and graphic designers. And the wacky, sardonic, slapstick vibe of the magazine resonated with an international army of music fanatics who were ready to burn their bell bottoms and stage-dive into the punk universe. The Best of Punk Magazine collects the best of these pages into the ultimate, must- have anthology: Interviews with the Ramones, Sex Pistols, John Cale and Brian Eno Photos by Roberta Bayley David Godlis, and Bob Gruen Cartoons by R. Crumb, Bobby London, and John Holmstrom The articles that formed the groundwork for Please Kill Me, the legendary oral history of punk by Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain Two "graphic novels"—The Legend of Nick Detroit and Mutant Monster Beach Party—told through photographs featuring Debbie Harry, Joey Ramone, Richard Hell, Andy Warhol, Peter Wolf, and David Johansen The Best of Punk Magazine is a must- have for people who love punk rock music, comics, fanzines, Blondie, the Ramones, Lou Reed, the Velvet Underground, the Sex Pistols, and the legendary CBGB scene.

  • Gimme Danger
Amazon Studios, Magnolia Pictures, & Low Mind Films In Association with Better Wide Present GIMME DANGER A Film by Jim Jarmusch Running time: 108 min Official Selection 2016 Cannes Film Festival – World Premiere 2016 Toronto International Film Festival 2016 New York Film Festival FINAL PRESS NOTES Distributed in Canada by Films We Like Bookings and inquires: [email protected] SYNOPSIS Emerging from Ann Arbor Michigan amidst a countercultural revolution, The Stooges’ powerful and aggressive style of rock-n-roll blew a crater in the musical landscape of the late 1960s. Assaulting audiences with a blend of rock, blues, R&B, and free jazz, the band planted the seeds for what would be called punk and alternative rock in the decades that followed. Jim Jarmusch’s new film GIMME DANGER chronicles the story of The Stooges, one of the greatest rock- n-roll bands of all time. GIMME DANGER presents the context of the Stooges emergence musically, culturally, politically, historically, and relates their adventures and misadventures while charting their inspirations and the reasons behind their initial commercial challenges, as well as their long-lasting legacy. DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT – JIM JARMUSCH No other band in rock’n’roll history has rivaled The Stooges’ combination of heavy primal throb, spiked psychedelia, blues-a-billy grind, complete with succinct angst-ridden lyrics, and a snarling, preening leopard of a front man who somehow embodies Nijinsky, Bruce Lee, Harpo Marx, and Arthur Rimbaud. There is no precedent for The Stooges, while those inspired by them are now legion. GIMME DANGER is more an 'essay' than a document.

  • The Movement. Analyzing British Punk Music As a Driver of Change in the 70’S Crisis
FACULTAD de FILOSOFÍA Y LETRAS DEPARTAMENTO de FILOLOGÍA INGLESA Grado en Estudios Ingleses TRABAJO DE FIN DE GRADO Punk: the movement. Analyzing British punk music as a driver of change in the 70’s crisis. Natalia Sarmiento García Tutor: Berta Cano Echevarría 2014-2015 ABSTRACT Social movements always occur in specific places and due to particular socio-political conditions at specific periods. Masses assemble aiming to disrupt the prevailing turmoil in order to develop new cultural and political values. In the 1970s, the British population confronted a harsh economic inflation that lead to an industrial, economic and social chaos. Millions of young British were unemployed without any chance of future opportunities. At the same time, a new music style emerged in Britain, punk music. The inactive British viewed in punk the vibrancy of action. Punk music was the force that drove individuals to take action in the social unrest. Punk was a social movement in itself. Through an analysis of British punk as a music style, I will disclose how it influenced the social and political sphere creating a new aesthetics and new forms of activism. Key words: social movements, punk music, 70’s, Britain, punk movement.
