The Best of Punk Magazine, 2012, 372 Pages, John Holmstrom, 0061958352, 9780061958359, Harpercollins, 2012 The Best of Punk Magazine, 2012, 372 pages, John Holmstrom, 0061958352, 9780061958359, HarperCollins, 2012 DOWNLOAD http://bit.ly/1bysEvZ http://goo.gl/RrINK http://www.powells.com/s?kw=The+Best+of+Punk+Magazine Launched in 1976, Punk magazine announced an exploding youth movement, a new direction in American counterculture. Punk was to magazines what the stage at CBGB was to music: the gritty, live-wired, throbbing center of the punk universe. Despite its low-rent origins, the mag was an overnight success in the underground music scene, selling out every print run across the US and UK. Every musician who appeared on the cover of Punk became an icon of the era. But Punk not only championed music, it became a launching pad for writers, artists, cartoonists, and graphic designers. And the wacky, sardonic, slapstick vibe of the magazine resonated with an international army of music fanatics who were ready to burn their bell bottoms and stage-dive into the punk universe. The Best of Punk Magazine collects the best of these pages into the ultimate, must- have anthology: Interviews with the Ramones, Sex Pistols, John Cale and Brian Eno Photos by Roberta Bayley David Godlis, and Bob Gruen Cartoons by R. Crumb, Bobby London, and John Holmstrom The articles that formed the groundwork for Please Kill Me, the legendary oral history of punk by Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain Two "graphic novels"—The Legend of Nick Detroit and Mutant Monster Beach Party—told through photographs featuring Debbie Harry, Joey Ramone, Richard Hell, Andy Warhol, Peter Wolf, and David Johansen The Best of Punk Magazine is a must- have for people who love punk rock music, comics, fanzines, Blondie, the Ramones, Lou Reed, the Velvet Underground, the Sex Pistols, and the legendary CBGB scene. Art and music cross-fertilized with a vengeance following a stripped-down, hard-edged, anti- establishment ethos, with some artists plastering city walls with self-designed posters or spray painted monikers, while others commandeered abandoned buildings, turning vacant garages into makeshift theaters for Super 8 film screenings and raucous performances. Many artists found the experimental music scene more vital and conducive to their contrarian ideas than the handful of contemporary art galleries in the city. Artists in turn formed bands, performed in clubs and non- profit art galleries, and self-published their own records and zines while using public access cable channels as a venue for media experiments and cultural debates. Looking at Music: Side 2 is organized by Barbara London, Associate Curator, Department of Media and Performance Art, The Museum of Modern Art, and succeeds Looking at Music (2008), an examination of the interaction between artists and musicians of the 1960s and early 1970s.

Our first Boston show was with DYS, The Mighty COs and The AMERICA’S HARDCORE FU’s. It was very intense for us. We were so intimidated. Future generations will fuck up again THE OUTPATIENTS got started in 1982 by Deep Wound bassist Scott Helland At least we can try and change the one we’re in and his older brother Eric “Vis” Helland, guitarist/vocalist of Mace — a 1980-82 — Deep Wound, “Deep Wound” Metal group that played like Motörhead but dug Black Flag (a rare blend back then). The Outpatients opened for bands like EAST COAST Black Flag, Hüsker Dü and SSD. Flipside called ’em “one of the most brutalizing live bands In 1980, over-with small cities and run-down mill towns across the Northeast from the period.” 1983’s gnarly Basement Tape teemed with bored kids with nothing to do. Punk of any kind earned a cultural demo included credits that read: “Play loud in death sentence in the land of stiff upper-lipped Yanks. That cultural isolation math class.” became the impetus for a few notable local Hardcore scenes. CANCEROUS GROWTH started in 1982 in drummer Charlie Infection’s Burlington, WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS MA bedroom, and quickly spread across New had an active early-80s scene of England. They played on a few comps then 100 or so inspired kids. Western made 1985’s Late For The Grave LP in late 1984 Mass bands — Deep Wound, at Boston’s Radiobeat Studios (with producer The Outpatients, Pajama Slave Steve Barry).

  • History on My Arms Iggy Pop Llik Your Idols
DAGGER DVD REVIEWS! http://www.daggerzine.com/reviews_dvd.html 11.29.09 History On My Arms WITH DEE DEE RAMONE - (MVD)- Apparently this interview with Dee Dee was initially part of a Johnny Thunders documentary (done by Lech Kowalski, as was this) but they decided it could stand on its own as its own release. This has 3 segments, one is History on My Arms, one is Vom in Paris (not about the old Richard Meltzer band) and the third is Hey is Dee Dee Home. It also includes a fairly boring (extra) disc called Dee Dee Blues that I could have done without with him just noodling on the guitar. But the main interview on this is pretty interesting , basically about his love/hate relationship with Johnny Thunders and when/how he got each of his tattoos. It seems like every other sentences ends with “…and then we scored some dope” or “…and then we got high.” Dee Dee doesn’t romanticize the drug life, in fact, it seems as if he realizes how sad/pathetic it all is but it seems like every time he hung out with Thunders (who he eventually tried to avoid and then ended up hating after a fateful trip to Paris to meet up with Stiv Bators) he would go back using. The main interview is occasionally annoying as it keeps switching back to other interviews and him doing more noodling on guitar but that said, the main interview was pretty fascinating and the one part on here that you need to see.
