The car being pursued by police flips over and skids across the highway in the face of oncoming traffic. Gunfire. And with the exception of what are reported to be minor injuries suffered by one police officer, no one is hurt in the mayhem that took place on Route 24 mid-day Monday. Certainly we do not dispute the bravery of the township police officers who took part in the chase of a stolen car and who attempted to apprehend the driver of that car. These men, as law enforcement officials, put their lives at risk. But we would be less than candid if we did not express reser- vations as to the wisdom of a policy which too often results in high speed chases taking place on Route 24 and on other roadways in this municipality. When cars smash into concrete barri- ers, when a car skids across lanes of oncoming traffic, when guns are fired on a heavily trafficked highway and all this takes place without anyone suffering serious, perhaps fatal injury, we, indeed, have been lucky. The motorist chased by township police Monday was not known to be a person who had committed a crime of violence; he was apparently the driver of a stolen car. If we had not been lucky — if serious injury or death had occurred — would we say this police action had been warranted? If we are forced to choose between letting a car thief escape and risking the lives of not only police officers, but also those of innocent bystanders, our choice is the former. A deck there would impact no residents and might even anticipate the day when our downtown actually needs more parking. Still, I am willing to concede a deck at the train station makes a fair amount of sense. Despite the fact such a structure would be in my backyard, I would even support it— with the modest stipulation that the township design and build a structure as architecturally appealing as the new deck in Summit. Perhaps I’m ahead of myself: the survey has yet to be mailed and it remains to be seen whether residents will support a deck. For all I know, people will vote overwhelmingly to support a jitney. But valet parking? As I mentioned previously, this is silly. Where, exactly, will these cars go? How many valets will be hired—I don’t imagine too many people hopping off the Mid-Town Direct at 6:30 p.m. on a rainy and chilly Friday in early November will be terrible happy to wait in a line while someone fetches their car.
