That winter, trawlers started to operate in Icelandic waters all the year round. Vessels had further increased in size, and an important feature was that two fishrooms were now built, the aft one being used as a coal bunker, connected to the stokehold by a tunnel under the thwart bunker. The procedure now followed was that when the aft fishroom was filled with coal, it was worked through the tunnel into the stokehold. As soon as the fishroom was empty, the tunnel door was screwed down, the fishroom washed out and prepared for fish. Trawlers were now constructed with verandas around the wheelhouse, some with skeleton rails and some iron. The first two that I saw on my return to Hull were the Sea Horse and Sea Lion, both Pickering & Haldane Steam Fishing Co, but when I saw the Desdemona and Othello with their big iron verandas around the wheelhouse, I thought they were the last word in steam trawlers. BEHIND THE SCENES WITH A SHOREHAM FISHING FAMILY… CHANGING LIVES AND POTTING IN THE ENGLISH CHANNEL ON ROYAL REBEL Shoreham-by-Sea in West Sussex is one of those fishing communities that, over decades, have seen many changes. At times it has been a struggle, but those who fish from this port are born survivors. John Periam reports. Photos: Geoffrey Lee

ishing News took the opportunity to meet up F with Jim Partridge and go to sea on his 10m potter Royal Rebel SM 3, to see how the young crew onboard work. Jim runs his company Monteum from Fisherman’s Wharf on Brighton Road, and is a dedicated fisherman who wants to see the industry survive. Jim Partridge’s determination to encourage new blood into the industry resulted in him working with the authorities at Her Majesty’s Prison (HMP) Ford and HMP Lewes, to allow inmates to work at his wharf, making pots. One of those who first came along has now been released and, with agreement from the Probation Service, has joined Monteum full-time, and has really taken to his work. James Palmer, from HMP Ford, has achieved such a high success rate in getting inmates to work on day-release – not only with Monteum – that he has now been promoted to encourage other prisons across the UK to do the same. He will be succeeded at Ford by Chris Hawkes, who is responsible for helping prisoners integrate back into society and start life afresh. Jim Partridge said: “At the moment, we have two serving prisoners working with us on a daily basis – they travel to ‡ Monteum’s Royal Rebel moored at Fisherman’s Wharf.
