Dougherty Spring March 17, 2017 AOS 2017: Edward Elbridge Salisbury and the AOS Roberta L Dougherty, Yale University Available at: https://works.bepress.com/bintalbalad/23/ [SLIDE] An American Orientalist: Edward Elbridge Salisbury and the AOS AOS members probably know the subject of my paper this afternoon as one of the society’s prominent officers during its first half-century, having served as its Corresponding Secretary (1846-1857), President (twice, in 1863-1866, and again from 1873-1880),1 and, at various times, as member of the Board of Directors, a Vice President, and for his service on the publications committee of the Journal. The members may be less familiar with the fact that his appointment at Yale College as professor of Arabic and Sanskrit language and literature in 1841 was the first such professorship in the Americas--and in fact the first university professorship of any kind in the Americas.2 They may also be unaware of the extent to which Salisbury supported the early establishment of the Society not only with his time, but his means. Part of the AOS lore regarding Salisbury is that he was present at the society’s founding in 1842, but this was not actually the case. Although his name was indeed on the list of members first elected to the society after its founding, he may have remained unaware of his election for over a year. He was with some effort persuaded to serve as its Corresponding Secretary, and with even more difficulty persuaded to become its President.

Fundort Bereits seit Ende der 1970er Jahre war bekannt, dass sich auf dem Alacher Feld und benachbarten Fluren zwischen den Erfurter Vororten Gottstedt, Frienstedt und Bindersleben eine Siedlung der römischen Kaiserzeit befand. Der Bau der Autobahn 71 im Rahmen des Verkehrsprojektes Deutsche Ein- heit sollte den Fundplatz durchschneiden. Daher wurden auf der geplanten Trasse in den Jahren 2000–2003 Ausgrabungen durchgeführt und auf den Nachbarfluren noch einmal 2004 und 2005 Sondagen vorgenommen. Es wur- den gut zwei Hektar und damit ein Drittel des Fundplatzes untersucht, dabei konnten ungefähr 1500 archäologische Befunde erfasst und neben ungefähr einer Tonne Keramik, Hüttenlehm und Tierknochen etwa 3000 Sonderfunde (Bunt- und Edelmetall, Eisen, Knochengeräte, Spinnwirtel, Webgewichte) ge- borgen werden.1 1.1.     The Absent Vedas Will SWEETMAN University of Otago The Vedas were first described by a European author in a text dating from the 1580s, which was subsequently copied by other authors and appeared in transla- tion in most of the major European languages in the course of the seventeenth century. It was not, however, until the 1730s that copies of the Vedas were first obtained by Europeans, even though Jesuit missionaries had been collecting Indi- an religious texts since the 1540s. I argue that the delay owes as much to the rela- tive absence of the Vedas in India—and hence to the greater practical significance for missionaries of other genres of religious literature—as to reluctance on the part of Brahmin scholars to transmit their texts to Europeans. By the early eighteenth century, a strange dichotomy was apparent in European views of the Vedas. In Europe, on the one hand, the best-informed scholars believed the Vedas to be the most ancient and authoritative of Indian religious texts and to preserve a monotheistic but secret doctrine, quite at odds with the popular worship of multiple deities. The Brahmins kept the Vedas, and kept them from those outside their caste, especially foreigners. One or more of the Vedas was said to be lost—perhaps precisely the one that contained the most sublime ideas of divinity. By the 1720s scholars in Europe had begun calling for the Vedas to be translated so that this secret doctrine could be revealed, and from the royal library in Paris a search for the texts of the Vedas was launched.

A review of current theoretical issues in German-speaking prehistoric archaeology Kerstin P. Hofmann and Philipp W. Stockhammer∗ Abstract Whereas German-speaking archaeology (GSA) has long been understood as generally uninterested in theoretical debates, the situation has taken a most interesting development since the year 2000. Archaeologists tried to escape the general decline of the small university disciplines by getting more and more involved in the overarching research questions of cultural studies and in large-scale collaborative projects. The necessity of integrating a clear theoretical and methodological approach for a successful proposal and the subsequent research changed the significance of theoretical discussions. As a consequence, theme-oriented research has developed which aims at addressing overarching themes in the cultural and social sciences. We have chosen five of the most prominent themes in German-speaking archaeology – self-reflexivity, identities, space, cultural encounter and knowledge transfer – as well as material culture, and shed light on their theoretical conceptualization and methodological implementation in recent publications. Despite the lack of dominant schools of thinking, its strong rootedness in the evaluation of empirical sources, and its close link to the discipline of history, current GSA can contribute to the overall theoretical discourse of the discipline.

Alfred Ludwig (1832-1912) hat dafür die treffenden Worte gefunden: „Das Verdienst derer, die zuerst Bahn gebrochen und Leuchten aufgestellt haben, welchen die Forschung immer wieder und wieder sich zuwenden wird, läßt eben das der Epigonen (selbst der verdientesten) immer als unendlich untergeordneten Ranges erscheinen, und der Pflicht der Dank- barkeit gegen jene würden sie selbst die hervorragendsten eigenen Leistungen nicht entbinden kön- nen.”2 Einer dieser ganz Großen ist unbestreitbar Otto von Böhtlingk. Am 11. Juni 1815 wurde er in St. Petersburg geboren. Dorthin waren 1713 seine Vorfahren aus Lübeck gekommen; sie hatten die hol- ländische Staatsbürgerschaft angenommen. Böhtlingk (künftig: B.) studierte zunächst (ab 1833) in St. Petersburg orientalische Sprachen, besonders Arabisch und Persisch. Ab 1835 setzte er seine nun- mehr indologischen und indogermanistischen Studien in Bonn bei A.W. von Schlegel (1767-1845) und in Berlin bei Franz Bopp (1791-1867) fort. 1842 kehrte er nach St. Petersburg zurück und wurde noch im selben Jahr Adjunkt der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften. Seine Position in der Akade- mie ermöglichte ihm eine ungestörte Forschungsarbeit, die nicht durch Lehrverpflichtungen unter- brochen wurde.

    The History of Linguistics 81 4 The History of Linguistics LYLE CAMPBELL 1 Introduction Many “histories” of linguistics have been written over the last two hundred years, and since the 1970s linguistic historiography has become a specialized subfield, with conferences, professional organizations, and journals of its own. Works on the history of linguistics often had such goals as defending a particu- lar school of thought, promoting nationalism in various countries, or focuss- ing on a particular topic or subfield, for example on the history of phonetics. Histories of linguistics often copied from one another, uncritically repeating popular but inaccurate interpretations; they also tended to see the history of linguistics as continuous and cumulative, though more recently some scholars have stressed the discontinuities. Also, the history of linguistics has had to deal with the vastness of the subject matter. Early developments in linguistics were considered part of philosophy, rhetoric, logic, psychology, biology, pedagogy, poetics, and religion, making it difficult to separate the history of linguistics from intellectual history in general, and, as a consequence, work in the history of linguistics has contributed also to the general history of ideas. Still, scholars have often interpreted the past based on modern linguistic thought, distorting how matters were seen in their own time. It is not possible to understand developments in linguistics without taking into account their historical and cultural contexts. In this chapter I attempt to present an overview of the major developments in the history of linguistics, avoiding these difficulties as far as possible. 2 Grammatical Traditions A number of linguistic traditions arose in antiquity, most as responses to linguistic change and religious concerns.
