These social relationships in turn affect the different forms of exchange that take place in the archipelago. In particular, I am exploring the meaning and moral implications of monetary and commercial exchanges in contrast to exchanges of other kinds that take place between the Orang Suku Laut and other Malay and non-Malay communities. The Orang Suku Laut are regarded as the Orang asli Melayu (indigenous Malays) of Riau. Yet in the interaction between the Malays and Orang Suku Laut, there exists much fear between them with constant accusations of being poisoned and harmed by one and the other through practices of magic and witchcraft. This stems from the Malays' perception of the Orang Suku Laut as a "dangerous, dirty and unprogressive people. " The Orang Suku Laut are regarded as preferring a life of nomadism, and one without a religious orientation towards Islam, as opposed to a life of sedentism guided by the Islamic religion. This thesis explores how this self and other perceptions which have shaped the image of the Orang Suku Laut, have become enmeshed in the exchange economy of the Orang Suku Laut and the Malays. This thesis is the result of my own work and includes nothing which is the outcome of work done in collaboration. It does not exceed the 80,000 word limit. Unfortunately, many scholars who study the content of the texts have always misunderstood them. In their study, they specify on the superficial aspects, instead of functional and historical aspects of the mythical and legendary stories. It is the purpose of this paper to explore my conceptual understanding of mythological and legendary stories in the Malay classical historical texts to prove that there are indeed historical truth embedded within these stories. ABSTRACK This article attempts to discuss the appreciation of Malay oral traditions among the Chinese in Kelantan. The discussion is based on the fieldwork data which were collected in the three districts, i.e. Tumpat, Kota Bharu and Pasir Mas. Their appreciation could be viewed from several aspects such as language, daily costume, food, handy craft, art and healing rituals. The data show that the Chinese are assimilated with the Malay and the Siamese culture in Kelantan. As they accept the local cultures into their daily life, they resemble the Malays. The Malay oral traditions such as wayang kulit, menora and mak yong are appreciated well among them. Key words: Kelantan Chinese, culture, language, short kebaya, budu, tangkee and jawi script.

Di negara maju seperti United Kingdom terdapat pergerakan National Trust yang ditubuhkan pada lewat abad ke-19 (Waterson 1994) bertujuan untuk melindungi alam sekitar, sejarah, dan khazanah budaya daripada terhakis atau musnah akibat pembangunan pesat (Kim 2013). Pergerakan ini telah diterima secara meluas di banyak negara, seperti Amerika Syarikat, Jepun dan Australia, sebagai salah satu cara untuk mengekalkan sumber alam semulajadi dan budaya (Lee 2009). Di Malaysia terdapat beberapa jabatan yang bertanggungjawab untuk memulihara, memelihara, melindungi dan mempromosikan kekayaan khazanah warisan Malaysia seperti Jabatan Warisan Negara, Badan Warisan Malaysia dan WWF Malaysia. UNESCO adalah sebuah agensi Pertubuhan Bangsa-Bangsa Bersatu yang ditubuhkan pada tahun 1945. Tujuan penubuhannya adalah untuk menyumbang ke arah kedamaian dan keselamatan dengan mempromosikan kerjasama antarabangsa melalui bidang pendidikan, sains dan kebudayaan.     1 BAB I PENDAHULUAN A. Latar Belakang Pembelajaran bahasa memiliki peran sentral bagi perkembangan mental anak didik. Perkembangan mental yang dimaksud, yakni kemampuan bahasa manusia sebagian besar selalu mengalami progres yang meningkat. Perubahan terjadi ke arah yang lebih baik, seperti penguasaan kosa kata sampai penggunaannya dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Hal itu dikarenakan manusia adalah makhluk ciptaan yang paling istimewa dibandingkan dengan makhluk lainnya. Salah satu perbedaannya, yaitu mereka dibekali kemampuan berbahasa sejak lahir, sehingga mampu menggunakannya untuk berkomunikasi dengan sesamanya. Manusia tidak dapat hidup tanpa bahasa dikarenakan kehidupan mereka tiada hari tanpa berkomunikasi. Komunikasi dilakukan dengan berbagai tujuan sesuai dengan kepentingan masing-masing. Kedudukan bahasa tetap menjadi prioritas utama sebagai mata pelajaran umum yang harus dikuasai oleh anak didik hingga saat ini. Sebagaimana bahasa Indonesia selalu menjadi mata pelajaran umum yang wajib dilulusi anak didik. Mata pelajaran bahasa Indonesia juga selalu diujikan pada saat Ujian Nasional (UN), dimulai dari tingkat Sekolah Dasar (SD) sampai Sekolah Menengah Atas (SMA). Anak didik secara tidak sadar telah menguasai bahasa, baik secara teoretis dan praktis dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. 1 2 Penguasaan bahasa secara teoretis tidak terbatas pada pembelajaran kosa kata semata, melainkan adanya pembelajaran sastra yang mewarnai materi pembelajaran bahasa di sekolah. Pembelajaran sastra mengajarkan kepada anak didik mengenai nilai-nilai moral, kebudayaan dan kepekaan rasa yang sangat berguna dalam interaksi dengan sesama manusia dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Oleh karena itu, pengajaran sastra membuat anak didik menjadi kreatif dalam penggunaan bahasa. Rahmanto (2007: 15) menyatakan bahwa pengajaran sastra dilakukan dengan cara yang tepat maka dapat memberikan sumbangan yang besar untuk pemecahan masalah-masalah nyata dan cukup sulit di dalam kehidupan bermasyarakat.

Some conserva- tion groups have cautioned against thinking that the COVID-19 pandemic has given nature Note a break, pointing to mounting pressures to exploit nature further because of economic disruptions caused by the virus. Humans and nature – a very complex relationship. In our first article, Danièle Weiler recounts the story of two French naturalists who were hired by Stamford Raffles to collect wildlife specimens in the region. These two young men accompanied Raffles when he arrived in Singapore in 1819. A year later, the first systematic recording of Singapore’s rainfall and temperature was started by William Farquhar, as Lim Tin Seng notes. These stories remind us how scientific endeavours of the past were often associated with colonial, economic and military interests. Appropriately for the times, we have two stories that deal with pandemics. Bonny Tan looks at how 19th-century Singapore responded to a series of cholera outbreaks, while Kevin Y.L. Tan tells us how the Penang-born doctor Wu Lien-Teh – despite being marginalised by colonial authorities at home – played an instrumental role during the Manchurian plague.
