Biographical Note Born in 10 November 1807, died in 9 November 1848; writer; worked in a theatre in until 1844, then became a bookseller; tried to educate the working and lower middle class through various publications and by founding a debating club; political writer, orator and leader of the liberal opposition in Saxony in the 1840s; active in the German Revolution in 1848; founded the Vaterlandsverein; spokesman for the left wing in the parliament; while visiting the Vienna revolutionaries in 1848, together with Julius Fröbel, he was captured, summarily court- martialled and shot; became a martyr for freedom.
