Protest song was an integral component in the struggle of the German working class to achieve some measure of political and social equality in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Throughout this period, the working class found itself subjected to varying levels of political repression by the German authorities, and in order to promote their political views, industrial workers used the medium of song to protest against injustice. The thesis seeks to determine the significance of protest song for the political development of the German industrial working class through an analysis of song lyrics. The study of working-class protest song lyrics has largely been the preserve of historians from the former German Democratic Republic, where scholarship was shaped by the unique political imperatives of history writing under the Communist regime. This thesis seeks to redress the historiographical imbalance that this approach engendered, arguing that protest song produced under the auspices of the Social Democrats was both a culturally valid and politically significant feature of German working-class political life, albeit one that offered a different ideological approach to that of the overtly revolutionary output of the Communist movement. Additionally this thesis will acknowledge that working-class song was not merely used as an instrument of protest, but also as a medium to communicate political ideology. Protest song was an integral part of the cultural capital of the working class milieu, creating a distinct canon upon which German industrial workers drew in a variety of political, social and cultural situations. This study will engage with this canon in order to establish how the cultural practice of singing endowed working-class protest songs with an intrinsic political significance. Smith, a veteran of the National Park Service, now teaches at the University of Tennessee at Martin.     Introduction Cornelius Torp and Sven Oliver Müller I What sort of structure was the German state of 1871? What sort of powers and phenomena dominated it? What sort of potential for development did it possess? What inheritance did it leave behind? How did it shape the future course of German history? These questions have been at the heart of numerous historical controversies, in the course of which our understanding of Imperial Germany has fundamentally changed. Modern historical research on the German Empire was shaped by two important developments.1 The first was the Fischer controversy at the beginning of the 1960s, which put the question of the continuity of an aggressive German foreign policy from the First to the Second World War onto the agenda, thus providing one of the key impulses for research into the period before 1918.2 The second was a complex upheaval at almost exactly the same time in the historiography of modern Germany in which a particular interpretation of German history before World War I played a central role. The advocates of this interpretation immediately referred to it as a “paradigm change,” a concept then in fashion.3 Indeed, surprisingly quickly, a group of young historians were able to establish across a broad front a new interpretation of modern German history, which broke in many respects with old traditions. In their methodology, the representatives of the so-called “historical social science” (Historische Sozialwissenschaft) turned with verve against the interpretation which had dominated mainstream historiography up till then, which saw the dominant, most important historical actions and actors in politics and the state.

    Proletarian Myth and Political Mobilization: The ‘Kampfgruppen der Arbeiterklasse’ (Working-Class Combat Groups) in the GDR 1953–1989/90* Tilmann Siebeneichner Georg-August-Universität Göttingen ABSTRACT Political myths played a crucial role in the legitimation process of the German Democratic Republic. The ‘Kampfgruppen der Ar- beiterklasse’ – Combat Groups for short – created after the June- Uprising in 1953 were meant to materialise the myth of a united and pugnacious proletariat which would stand up to defend its ‘so- cialist achievements’ (‘sozialistische Errungenschaften’). On- going social ties at the grass-roots level proved as relevant for the support of the Combat Groups as local traditions. This points to invidual ‘spaces of experience’ (‘Erfahrungsräume’) which were crucial for ‘eigen-sinnige’ or ‘stubborn’ interest adoptions of the message of the Proletarian Myth. An analysis of the Combat Groups in this perspective thus promises information on the com- munication of a specific view on the political reality in ‘real exist- ing Socialism’, as well as it illustrates how people at the grass- roots level adopted structures of power for themselves. Benedict Department of History Graduate Program Professor Kevin Boyle ABSTRACT This work explores how German immigrants influenced the reshaping of American citizenship following the Civil War and emancipation. It takes a new approach to old questions: How did African American men achieve citizenship rights under the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments? Why were those rights only inconsistently protected for over a century? German Americans had a distinctive effect on the outcome of Reconstruction because they contributed a significant number of votes to the ruling Republican Party, they remained sensitive to European events, and most of all, they were acutely conscious of their own status as new American citizens. Drawing on the rich yet largely untapped supply of German-language periodicals and correspondence in Missouri, Ohio, and Washington, D.C., I recover the debate over citizenship within the German-American public sphere and evaluate its national ramifications. Partisan, religious, and class differences colored how immigrants approached African American rights. Yet for all the divisions among German Americans, their collective response to the Revolutions of 1848 and the Franco-Prussian War and German unification in 1870 and 1871 left its mark on the opportunities and disappointments of Reconstruction.

April 2014 Im März 2014 Stiftung Archiv der Parteien und Massenorganisationen im Bundesarchiv - Jahresbericht 2013 Vorwort Im Jahr 2013 konnte die Stiftung ihr 20jähriges Bestehen feiern. Über die vielen Glückwünsche und die Anerkennung, die aus diesem Anlass geäußert wurde, ha- ben sich alle hier Tätigen sehr gefreut. Uns wurde erneut bewusst gemacht, dass auch nach gut zwei Jahrzehnten die Eigenheiten dieser Einrichtung und vor allem ihrer Bestände sie zu etwas Besonderem machen, das zwar wie ein normales Ar- chiv und eine normale Bibliothek aussieht, doch allein schon in dieser Kombinati- on, vor allem aber auf Grund der Entstehung ihrer Bestände etwas Eigenes dar- stellt. Den Gästen konnte die Broschüre mit dem Titel Einsichtnahme übergeben werden, in der Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter der Stiftung einen Überblick über Entwicklung und Bestände der Stiftung geben. Eine Einsichtnahme in die zuvor nur durch wenige ausgewählte Personen oder die Leitungen der Organisationen nutzbaren Bestände zu ermöglichen, war der Auftrag der Stiftung, den sie von Anfang an sehr ernst nahm. Zunächst standen für diese Aufgabe die Konsolidierung der Bestände und die Zusammenstellung al- ler vorhandenen Aufzeichnungen, die zur Erleichterung der Nutzung des Archiv- guts selbst in Frage kamen, im Zentrum der Arbeit. Dabei bildete sich ein Archiv heraus, das sich bereits drei Jahre nach der Zusammenführung in seiner 1996 er- schienenen Kurzübersicht über die Bestände mit einer klaren inneren Gliederung nach Provenienzen als eine neue Einheit präsentieren konnte. Dabei wurde erkennbar, wie sehr die Auswirkungen früherer Bearbeitungen die Bestände umgeformt haben.

    Band IV Klaus Reinhold Chronik Arnstadt 704 - 2004 1300 Jahre Arnstadt 2. erweiterte und verbesserte Auflage Teil 4 (Fortsetzung) Hebamme Anna Kessel (Weiße 50) verhalf am 26.10.1942 dem viertausendstem Kind in ihrer langjährigen beruflichen Laufbahn zum Leben. 650 „ausgebombte“ Frauen und Kinder aus Düsseldorf trafen am 27.10.1942 mit einem Son- derzug in Arnstadt ein. Diamantene Hochzeit feierte am 28.10.1942 das Ehepaar Richard Zeitsch (86) und seine Ehefrau Hermine geb. Hendrich (81), Untergasse 2. In der Nacht vom Sonntag, dem 1. zum 2.11.1942, wurden die Uhren (um 3.00 Uhr auf 2.00 Uhr) um eine Stunde zurückgestellt. Damit war die Sommerzeit zu Ende und es galt wieder Normalzeit. Zum ersten Mal fand am 14.11.1942 in Arnstadt eine Hochzeit nach dem Tode statt. Die Näherin Silva Waltraud Gertrud Herzer heiratete ihren am 9.8.1941 gefallenen Verlobten, den Obergefreiten Artur Erich Hans Schubert mit dem sie ein Töchterchen namens Jutta (7 30.8.1939 in Arnstadt) hatte. Die Heirat erfolgte mit Wirkung des Tages vor dem Tode, also 8.8.1941. Die Tochter wurde „durch diese Eheschließung legitimiert“. 1943 Der Sturm 8143 des NS-Fliegerkorps baute Anfang 1943 auf dem Fluggelände Weinberg bei Arnstadt eine Segelflugzeughalle im Werte von 3500 RM. Die Stadt gewährte einen Zuschuß von 1000 RM und trat dem NS-Fliegerkorps als Fördermitglied mit einem Jahres- beitrag von 100,00 RM bei. Der fast 18-jährige Schüler Joachim Taubert (7 24.2.1925 in Arnstadt) wurde am 6.1.1943, 9.00 Uhr, in der Wohnung seiner Mutter, der Witwe Gertrud Elisabeth Taubert geb.

The German democrat and champion for freedom, one of the most well-known members of the Frankfurt National Assembly, thus died on a heap of sand in Brigittenau, a Viennese suburb. The bullets ended the life of a man who had fought tirelessly for a Germany unified in justice and in freedom – as a political publicist, publisher and founder of the Schillerverein in Leipzig, as a parliamentarian in the Paulskirche in Frankfurt, and finally with a gun in his hand on the barricades in Vienna. To the very last, Robert Blum fought for a German nation-state in the republican mould, legitimised by parliamentary structures. He campaigned for a brand of democracy in which civil liberties and human rights were accorded to one and all. And he fought for a Europe in which free peoples should live together in peace, from France to Poland and to Hungary. His death on 9 November 1848 marked one of the many turning points in our history. By executing the parliamentarian Robert Blum, the princes and military commanders of the Ancien Régime demonstrated their power and sent an unequivocal message to the Paulskirche National Assembly.
