Gero, Donostiako Kontserbatorioan sartu zen eta han Gabriel Olaizola izan zuen irakasle bezala. Donostiako Orfeoian parte hartu zuen eta bertan hasieratik bakarlari bezala aritu zen. Eusko Abesbatza Koruan eta Gabriel Olaizolak eratutako Eresoinka koruetan ere esku hartu zuen. Jarraian Parisera alde egiten du kantu ikasketak hobetzearren Madame Babayaren eskutik. Gerra Zibila igaro eta gero, Madrilera jo zuen zarzuelako konpainia berriak eratuko zirelakoan. Arrakasta handia lortu zutenez, Mexikon bizitzen geratu ziren eta han bertan konpainia propioa eratu zuten, gero Latinoamerika osoan zehar eta Estatu Batuetako zenbait hiritan lanean arituko zirelarik. 1948an Abreun konpainia propioa eratu zuen. Pepita Embilek Mexikon "Zarzuelaren Erregina" titulua jaso zuen. 1966an denbora batez Espainiara itzuli zen José de Lunaren konpainiarekin bira egiteko. Eszenatokian agertu zen azken aldia 1974an izan zen Bartzelonako Lizeoan Doña Francisquita kantatuz. Pepitak Aurora Beltránen papera interpretatu zuen eta bere senarrak Don Matíasen papera, zuzendaria euren seme Plácido izan zelarik. PEPITA EMBIL (Getaria 1918 - México D.F 1994) Adquirió sus primeros conocimientos musicales de la mano de su padre que era profesor de piano y órgano. Posteriormente ingresó en el Conservatorio de San Sebastián donde fue alumna de canto de Gabriel Olaizaola. Formó parte del Orfeón Donostiarra, donde desde un principio cantó partes de solista, y del Coro Eusko Abesbatza y Eresoinka fundado por Gabriel Olaizaola. Posteriormente se trasladó a París para perfeccionar sus estudios de canto con Madame Babaya. Tras la guerra civil se trasladó a Madrid atraída por la formación de nuevas compañías de zarzuela. Debutó en el Liceo de Barcelona con el rol de Plácida. En 1940 cantó Sor Navarra de Federico Moreno Torroba en Pamplona junto al que fue su marido, Plácido Domingo Ferrer, y poco después Black el payaso y Don Manolito ambas compuestas por Pablo Sorozabal, Loza lozana, La canción del Ebro, Tiene razón Don Sebastián de Guerrero, En el balcón de palacio de Romo, La niña de la flor de Rosillo y Leonardo el joven de Torregrosa, entre otras. Entre 1940 y 1945 fue primera soprano de la Compañía Lírica del Teatro Calderón que en 1943 pasó a llamarse Compañía de Pepita Embil y Antonio Medio con la que estrenó Loza lozana, En el balcón de Palacio y Tiene razón don Sebastián. A pesar de las ofertas que recibió para cantar ópera, Pepita Embil dedicó su vida a la zarzuela. En 1946 junto a su marido, sus hijos Mª Pepa y Plácido, y la compañía lírica de Moreno Torroba emprendió una gira por Puerto Rico, Cuba, Venezuela y México que duraría dos años. El éxito cosechado les llevó a fijar su residencia en México donde formaron su propia compañía con la que recorrieron toda Latinoamérica y algunas ciudades de Estados Unidos. En 1948 fundó su propia compañía en el Abreu. Pepita Embil recibió el título de "Reina de la zarzuela" en México. En 1966 regresó junto a su marido temporalmente a España para hacer una gira con la compañía de José de Luna. La última vez que apareció en un escenario fue en 1974 en el Liceo de Barcelona cantando Doña Francisquita donde Pepita interpretó el papel de Aurora Beltrán y su marido el de Don Matías, dirigidos por su hijo Plácido. En un momento de compasión, Luis María abraza a Merche, Nieves los ve, causando en ella un dolor amargo que le hace tomar la decisión de ingresar en el convento y tomar los hábitos. Lo que da lugar a que Merche y Luis María comiencen una relación. Pasado un tiempo, Rodrigo, poeta y romancero, acude al convento para transmitir a Nieves que Luis María ha sido herido en la guerra y que quiere verle a ella. Nieves, con la comprensión de la Madre Superiora, abandona el convento para atenderle. Transcurrido un tiempo y una vez sanado Luis María, Merche y Nieves mantienen una conversación en la cual Merche comenta a su hermana las dudas que tiene con Luis María, ya que cree que él ya no le quiere y a quien sigue queriendo es a Nieves. Fermín suplica a Luis María que no haga más daño a sus hijas y que lo mejor para todos sería que abandonara el pueblo. Ante las palabras de Fermín, Luis María y Nieves se sinceran y, por el bien de todos, deciden separar sus caminos. Él abandona el pueblo como un navarro de buen corazón y Nieves vuelve al convento donde encuentra la dicha del amor.     Plácido Domingo – a short biography Plácido Domingo was born in the Barrio de Salamanca district of Madrid on January 21, 1941. He is the son of Plácido Domingo Ferrer and Pepita Embil Echaníz, two Spanish Zarzuela performers, who nurtured his early musical abilities. Domingo's father, a violinist performing for opera and zarzuela orchestra, was half Catalan and half Aragonese, while his mother, an established singer, was a Basque. After moving to Mexico at the age of 8, Plácido Domingo went to Mexico City’s Conservatory of Music to study piano and conducting, but eventually was sidetracked into vocal training after his voice was discovered. The highly gifted singer had his first professional engagement as accompanist to his mother in a concert at Mérida, Yucatan, in 1957. He soon achieved great acclaim at international level. Challenged by cosmopolitan groups and new roles In 1961, Domingo made his operatic debut in a leading role as Alfredo in La Traviata at Monterrey. The performance of La Traviata included a baritone singing in Hungarian, a soprano in German, a tenor in Italian, and the chorus in Hebrew. Domingo credits this cosmopolitan group for improving his abilities in several languages. At the end of 1962, he signed a six month contract with the Israel National Opera in Tel Aviv but later extended the contract and stayed for two and a half years, singing in 280 performances and incorporating 12 different roles. Domingo has sung and continues to sing in every important Opera House in the world including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Milan’s La Scala, the Vienna State Opera, London's Covent Garden, Paris' Bastille Opera, the San Francisco Opera, Chicago's Lyric Opera, the Washington National Opera, the Los Angeles Opera, the Teatro del Liceu in Barcelona, Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, the Real in Madrid, and at the Bayreuth and Salzburg Festivals.

    The Duality of the Composer-Performer by Marek Pasieczny Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Arts Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Supervisors: Prof. Stephen Goss ©Marek Pasieczny 2015 The duality of the composer-performer A portfolio of original compositions, with a supplementary dissertation ‘Interviews Project: Thirteen Composers on Writing for the Guitar’. Abstract The main focus of this submission is the composition portfolio which consists of four pieces, each composed several times over for different combinations of instruments. The purpose of this PhD composition portfolio is threefold. Firstly, it is to contribute to the expansion of the classical guitar repertoire. Secondly, it is to defy the limits imposed by the technical facilities of the physical instrument and bring novelty to its playability. Third and most importantly, it is to overcome the challenges of being a guitarist-composer. Due to a high degree of familiarity with the traditional guitar repertoire, and possessing intimate knowledge of the instrument, it is often difficult for me as a guitarist-composer to depart from habitual tendencies to compose truly innovative works for the instrument. I have thus created a compositional approach whereby I separated my role as a composer from my role as a guitarist in an attempt to overcome this challenge. I called it the ‘dual-role’ approach, comprising four key strategies that I devised which involves (1) borrowing ‘New Music’ practices to defy traditionalist guitar tendencies which are often conservative and insular; (2) adapting compositional materials to different instrumentations; and expanding on (3) the guitar technique as well as; (4) the guitar’s inventory of extended techniques.

    Program Notes Adam Mitchell (b. 1990) is a 5th year vocal music education major studying voice with Louise Toppin at the Uni- versity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He currently sings with the UNC Men’s Glee Club under director Dr. Dan Huff and is enrolled in the UNC-BEST program for music education. A native of Wilmington, NC, Adam entered UNC in fall of 2008 with intent to study pharmacy before switching to music the next year. He has studied guitar since age fourteen, and has been playing and singing professionally since age eighteen. Since then, Adam has performed in restaurants and venues in Wilmington, Chapel Hill, and Durham, most notably Jack Sprat Café and The Franklin Hotel, where he regularly performs one to two times a month. As a classical vocalist, Adam has performed recitals in both Wilmington and Chapel Hill for public schools, nursing homes, and university functions and has performed as a soloist for UNC Men’s Glee Club. Adam also spent a two week intensive study in Spanish art song repertoire at La Escuela Superior de Canto de Madrid where he performed on recitals and master classes focused on bettering the understanding and performance of Spanish song. In addition to performing, Adam cur- rently teaches private voice, guitar, and drum lessons. As a composer and songwriter, he has completed seven pop songs, one piece for classical guitar entitled La Corrida, and a musical setting of four poems by Shel Silverstein for classical voice and piano. In addition to composing, Adam has also arranged Every Time We Touch by Cas- cada for pep band and The Beatles’ Let it Be for men’s choir.

    Federico Moreno Torroba’s Relations with the Franco Regime Walter Aaron Clark University of California, Riverside A few years ago, I mentioned to a fellow musicologist, an eminent and learned Hispanist, that Bill Krause and I were writing a book about Federico Moreno Torroba.1 Much to my surprise, his immediate and almost breathless reaction was, “Torroba? Wasn’t he that . ?” I knew the words he intended but hesitated to say: “fascist composer?” In that moment it dawned on me that Torroba was and continues to be viewed by some—imprecisely but persistently—as having been a fellow traveler with Franco. I knew then that this was an issue we would have to confront fearlessly, and without any preconceptions or attempts to massage our data to suit a preconceived outcome. This paper is an initial summary of our findings and presents our answer to a simple question: what was the nature of Torroba’s relationship with Franco and Francoism? Let’s make one thing perfectly clear: we reject out of hand the argument from guilt by association. Many eminent composers and artists made their peace with the Franco regime and flourished in Spain during the dictatorship, including not only Joaquín Rodrigo and Joaquín Turina but also such stalwarts of the artistic avant-garde as Salvador Dalí and Joan Miró. Yet, they are not thought of as fascists. So, why tar and feather Torroba? Perhaps it is because he was Catholic and a monarchist. But millions of his fellow Spaniards were the same, and that did not automatically make them suspect.

Zarzuela, a traditional form of Spanish musical theater, has been championed by the world’s great Hispanic opera singers, including Montserrat Caballé, Pilar Lorengar, Alfredo Kraus, and Teresa Berganza. The great tenor Plácido Domingo actually began his magnificent career singing zarzuela and has kept it in his repertory over the years. This Teatro Real production has been seen at Milan’s La Scala, Washington National Opera, and Los Angeles Opera, and we are proud to be able to present it to our Maestro Ramon Tebar and Bob Heuer South Florida audience. It promises to be a highlight of the season. The season will also include Florida Grand Opera’s first-ever production of Puccini’s La rondine, which has been enjoying renewed worldwide popularity, and truly remarkable artists in productions of Verdi’s Rigoletto and Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette.
