Dear Friends,

It was one hundred years ago this month and on a site just three blocks away from the School’s current home that the DePaul University School of Music opened its doors for the first time and began the noble mission of educating promising young musicians—the mission that continues to fully engage our 135 faculty and staff every single day. Of course, the School of Music is profoundly elevated now from those very humble beginnings. Still, we expect to spend a part of this year looking Donald E. Casey back and reflecting upon the path that has Dean of the School of Music Of Note: 2011-2012 Highlights 4-5 brought us to where we find ourselves today. Mr. Fujikura will have spent that week with us, teaching our 2011-12 students and helping us to fully realize the intentions imbedded in his new piece. Donors for 2011-12 18-23 Finally, our celebrations will conclude at Orchestra Hall on May 29th with a concert of Alumni & Friends Beethoven’s monumental Symphony No. 9 by the DePaul Symphony Orchestra and our Cortelyou Heritage Society combined choruses. The symphony will be preceded by the world premiere of a piece Endowments commissioned from celebrated composer Augusta Read Thomas, conceived as a companion piece to the Beethoven.

Coincidentally, the College of Law and the newly-named Driehaus School of Business are also celebrating their centennials this year, and the three colleges will be collaborating on a couple of special events. More information about these events will be forthcoming and available on the School’s website.

And there is more to do and yet more to celebrate. DePaul has entered into the final two years of its eight-year campaign. One aspect of the campaign is to raise funds to help support the cost of all new state-of-the art facilities for the School of Music. The design of these anticipated facilities is nearing completion and it’s already clear that they will be extraordinary and will serve our students and faculty magnificently for perhaps a century or more!

It’s a wonderful time to be connected to this remarkable school—one whose is Donald E. Casey, Dean about to be secured in a very big way.
