    2017: A Year of Round Numbers If we could travel to the future, we’d probably say that 2017 was the year of WorldPride, a celebration of equal rights which three million people are expected to attend. Because whoever you love, Madrid loves you. Just a mention of this year would be enough to relive the music festivals that await us: Mad Cool, Dcode and the Veranos de la Villa Festival which has already become a classic. Like a beautiful mirage, several of the season’s exhibitions would also appear: the Escher retrospective, which has marked the grand opening of Gaviria Palace as a cultural centre, and the show devoted to the Hispanic Society opening in early April at the Prado Museum. And it’s very likely that some of the theatre productions being performed for the first time will be consigned to posterity: Ushuaia by Alberto Conejero at Teatro Español and the adaptation of En la orilla by Rafael Chirbes at Centro Dramático Nacional. If we’ve chosen to use the term ‘probably’ rather than ‘definitely’ it’s because we don’t want to blow our own trumpet, but no one can deny that 2017 will be remembered in Madrid for its round numbers: the 10-year anniversary of Matadero Madrid; 15 for La Casa Encendida; 20 for PHotoEspaña and for the reopening of Teatro Real; 25 for the Reina Sofía and Thyssen-Bornemisza museums; 40 for Fernán Gómez Centro Cultural de la Villa and the Madrid Marathon; and the fourth centenary of Plaza Mayor, whose first stone was laid on 2 December 1617.

It has three sites, two in Madrid (the Fernán Núñez Palace and the Madrid Railway Museum) and another one in Vilanova i la Geltrú (the Catalonia Railway Museum), and its Board of Trustees inclu- des the most important companies in the public railway sector. Its main objectives are: conservation of the historical and cultural railway heritage; promotion of the knowledge and use of the railway by the society; research and specialised training on the railway; and dissemination of the current issues and cultural aspects related to the railway through periodic publications and other means. To fulfil these objectives, the Foundation carries out a wide range of activities. The Foundation is in charge of the preservation and public exhibition of the railway museum collections through its two museums and preserves and enriches the funds of the Railway History Archive and its Railway Library and Newspaper Library, making them accessible to the general public through its Researchers Room located in the Madrid museum. This sector has undergone a series of fundamental transformations in the recent past, primary among which has been opening the previously state-controlled monopoly up to competition. As part of a broader investigation of historical memory and its constitutive effects, I analyse railway historiography and museum displays as ethnographic objects. This analysis reveals the inner workings of forms of historical representation that, I argue, marginalize labour as a social and political actor.     www.iberianrailwayssociety.org Issue No. 13 Summer 2009 he inaugural IRS meeting took place at the Model T Railway Club in London on 22nd February 2006, and was attended by about 20 prospective members from all around the UK. A general discussion took place and introductions, suggestions and proposals were made. At this meeting a small committee was voted on and tasked with setting up the Society on a formal basis. The Committee members are: Chairman David Stevenson Secretary Charles Phillips Journal Editor Michael Guerra Treasurer & Membership Secretary Tony Bowles Publicity & Exhibitions Myles Munsey THE BASICS The remit of the Society is to stimulate interest in and disseminate information about railways on the Iberian Peninsular and the Balearic Islands. It was felt at this time that extending this remit to Spanish and Portuguese speaking areas of the world would be too ambitious. It is proposed that a Society Journal be published four times a year and that this would be the main conduit between members. Local meetings and branches were also to be established wherever possible to encourage membership from the widest possible area. A fledgling library could be made available to members as time went on. Consideration would be given to organising trips from the UK, both formal and informal, as a way of enabling members to meet in a very convivial atmosphere and whilst indulging their passion for rail travel! MEMBERSHIP Membership was to be open to all and would entitle the member to receipt of the magazine, use of the Societies’ facilities and attendance and voting rights at an Annual General Meeting.
