Akhenaton is an important ruler of ancient Egypt because he revolutionized the religion of the time. At the time when he came to power polytheism, or belief in many gods, was the practiced religion. He wanted to change this so that the only god worshipped was . He changed his name from Amenhotep IV to Akhenaton, meaning “effective for Aten”. Nefertiti and Akhenaton built a new city dedicated to Aten and named it . They attempted to force the people to move from Thebes to the new city. Eventually however, Amarna was abandoned and Egypt returned to their polytheistic religion.

Nobody really knows what happened to Nefertiti, but there are several theories. She disappears from artistic depictions after about 12 years of reign. The most obvious theory would be that she died. Some historians, however, believe that she ruled after the death of Akhenaton, before his son by another wife was old enough to rule.
