Page Three Good Shepherd Catholic Community August 1, 2021 Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Diocesan priest or Religious : People have asked me at times to which religious order I belong. My answer is I am a diocesan priest. As a diocesan priest I am ordained for a particular diocese; in my case the Diocese of Rochester. When I was or- dained by Bishop Matthew Clark, I I had to take a promise to obedience to Bishop Clark and his successors. So my promise of obedi- ence is now to Bishop Matano and his successors. As a diocesan priest I can be sent to serve in any parish in the diocesan territory. Religious Order may serve in a diocese with the permission of the Ordinary (bishop) of the diocese. But they are part of a religious community and are called to be obedient to their order’s religious superior. There are many different religious communities in the church which are distinguished by a “charism” that most often reflects the of the founder of the community. In our parish we have been helped out at times by members of The Capuchin , who have a community house in Interlaken. Most recently, Father Richard Crawley, OFM Cap, has celebrated Masses for me when I have been away. Father Crawley currently serves as a Chaplin at Cayuga Correctional Facility in Moravia. People have asked what is the meaning of the letters after his name and after the names of other professed religious? The following is an answer provided by our bulletin publisher, ©LPi

Answer: The Catholic Church includes hundreds of religious communities. The priests, religious brothers, religious sisters, and of these communities (which are often referred to as “religious orders”) are committed to particular spiritual traditions and often to a particular charism (such as teaching, healthcare, social work, or pastoral care). To help identify a person as a member of a particular religious community, the custom developed of including post-nominal letters that provide a sort of shorthand for the name of the community that the priest, , sister or is part of. So, for example OSB after a person’s name would indicate that they are a member of the Order of St. Benedict (the ), just as SJ would indi- cate that a priest or brother is a member of the (the Jesuits) or RSM would show that a woman is a Sister of Mercy. Other common examples include: DC = Daughters of Charity OP = The Order of Preachers (Dominicans) FSC = The Brothers of the Christian Schools/Christian Brothers OCist = The Order of Cistercians OCD = Order of Discalced OFM = The (the Franciscans) OFM Cap = The Capuchin Franciscans OSF=Franciscan Sisters SSND = School Sisters of Notre SVD = Society of the Divine Word (Divine Word Missionaries) SC = Sisters of Charity SDS = Society of the Divine Savior (Salvatorian Priests and Brothers and Salvatorian Sisters) ©LPi

In discerning vocations to the priesthood or religious life it is important to discern if God is calling one to serve in a particular diocese or if God is calling them to a particular charism or mission that can be lived out in a religious community. For myself the call- ing I was receiving from God was to be a diocesan priest. When I heard the calling to serve I had been living in the Diocese of Roch- ester since my college days. I had been baptized in the Diocese of Albany, confirmed in the Diocese of Syracuse, and ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Rochester 39 plus years ago. And here I remain to live out my vocation. God’s blessings and peace, Father Bill You Are Cordially Invited to a Mass of Recognition of the Sacrament of Matrimony.
