A Brief History of the Medieval Knights Templar
A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE MEDIEVAL KNIGHTS TEMPLAR he medieval Knights Templar, best known to us today as the T famed warriors of the Crusades, were a devout military religious Order that uniquely combined the roles of knight and monk in a way the Western medieval world had never seen before. Originally they were known as the Poor Knights of Christ and the Temple of Solomon, or, more simply, as the Knights Templar. In a famous letter written in the 1130s, In Praise of the New Knighthood, St Bernard of Clairvaux elevated the Templar Order above all other Orders of the day, establishing the image of the Templars as a fierce spiritual militia for Christ. He regarded them as a "new species of knighthood, previously unknown in the secular world..." To him, they were a unique combination of knight and monk; to later historians, they were the first military order, soon imitated by the Knights Hospitaller, by several Spanish orders and, by the end of the 12th century, by the Teutonic Knights. As a holy militia fighting for Christ, the Templars were willing to put aside the usual temptations of ordinary secular life for an arduous, dedicated life of service. Ever since then, the legacy of the Templars has been –first and foremost - the concept of service. The Templars officially originated in the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem in 1118 A.D., when nine knights, mainly French, vowed to protect pilgrims on the dangerous roads leading to Jerusalem. These courageous knights gained the favor of King Baldwin II of Jerusalem who granted them part of his palace for their headquarters, which was located in the southeastern part of the Temple Mount, called "Solomon's Temple". -

The Enciclopedia Cattolica defines a confraternity as an ecclesiastical corporation, composed primarily of the laity, canonically erected and governed by a competent superior, with the aim of promoting the Christian faith by means of special good works directed to divine worship or to charity to one’s neighbor. Often worship and charity are associated aims in the statutes of confraternities. Thus conceived, they are genuine and stable ecclesiastical foundations with their own organization, capable of having their own statutes, etc. According to the Code of Canon Law of 1917, confraternities are not to be confused with: 1. those institutes that have the title of “pious causes” (hospitality, recovery houses, orphanages, etc.) which have a more complex aim; 2. pious unions that exist for a particular occasion, held together by the will of their members, which go out of existence when there are no more members; 3. secular third orders that are closely linked with the religious order from which they derive their name; 4. associations of the arts and of craftsmen which have an aim that is primarily economic, even if they place themselves under the protection of a saint. -

INTRODUCTION In 1810 there began in Colombia, as in most Latin American countries, the process leading to independence from Spain.1 Though this process necessarily and permanently altered relations between Spanish rulers and their former subjects in America, the separation did not bring immediate radical changes in relations between the Catholic Church and the emerging republics. Those changes came about gradually as a result of developments within Colombia in particular and throughout Latin America generally. Spain determined in the New World that the Catholic Church was the only recognized and established religion. With independence in the nineteenth century, the new authorities maintained the same state- religion model. -

Little is known of their origins, and most of their records were destroyed during the suppression in the fourteenth century. In addition, they combined seemingly incompatible objectives: warriors and monks, as well as laity and clergy. This study bridges those divides, providing the historical developments from a secular and religious context. To understand the Templars’ foundation, it needs to be based on a premise that combines the ideologies of the priestly and knightly classes–salvation and the means to attain it. The conclusions were drawn following a multi-disciplinary approach. The primary source materials included the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures, patristic authors, medieval literature, canon law, the Templars’ rules, in addition to monastic cartularies and chronicles. The secondary sources were a similar collection from various disciplines. The approach allowed for the examination of the Templars from multiple angles, which helped to highlight their diversified origins. The Knights Templar were the product of a long evolution beginning with the Pauline imagery of the Christian as a soldier battling his/her own spiritual demons and continuing through the call for a crusade to defend the Patrimony of Christ. -

ST GEORGE’S CHAPEL ARCHIVES & CHAPTER LIBRARY Research guides No.1 The Order of the Garter Foundation and composition The Most Noble Order of the Garter, the oldest surviving Order of Chivalry in the world, was founded by Edward III in or just before 1348. St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, became and remains the spiritual home of the Order and holds the annual Service of Thanksgiving on Garter Day which is attended by the Sovereign and Companions of the Order. The origins of the Order’s blue garter and motto, ‘Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense’ (Shame on Him Who Thinks Evil of It), are uncertain. The date of the foundation of the Order of the Garter is a subject of historiographical controversy, largely due to the absence of early records of the Order. The French chronicler Froissart, writing between 1370 and 1400 and drawing upon the account of the English ecclesiastic Adam of Murimuth, claimed that the foundation of the Order coincided with the feast held by Edward III at Windsor Castle in January or February of 1344. At this feast, according to Murimuth, Edward had declared an intention to establish a Round Table of three hundred knights ‘in the same manner and estate as the Lord Arthur, formerly King of England’. It is now widely believed that Froissart wrongly conflated the events of the feast held in 1344 with the actual foundation of the Order of the Garter, which occurred later in the 1340s and possibly coincided with the establishment of the College of St George, Windsor, in 1348. -
