Art. 1] SOVEREIGN ORDER OF ST. JOHN OF JERUSALEM §C 1.1 The name of the Order is the SOVEREIGN ORDER of ST. JOHN of JERUSALEM, KNIGHTS HOSPITALLER. KP II abridged version of the name/title of the Sovereign Order is O.S.J; however, in order to avoid confusion with other Orders of St. John of Jerusalem, general usage for the Sovereign Order of St. John of Jerusalem, Knights Hospitaller is S.O.S.J. CHRISTIANITY §C 2.1 As specified in the King Peter II Constitution “the Order is a Christian, chivalric, ecumenical and international community.” AIMS §C 2.1 The Sovereign Order is defined as a Christian, Knightly, chivalric, ecumenical, international organization. The principal objectives are Charity and the Defense of the Christian Religion against Atheism. True also to its traditions, the Sovereign Order upholds the ideals of a free world and the rights of men and women as defined in the Universal Declaration of the United Nations. It aspires to make a contribution, strictly Christian, to the formation of human and spiritual leadership. The community is made up of persons who are distinguished by their origin, education, upbringing, capacities and worthy deeds. Whilst taking an established and indispensable hierarchy into account, the Sovereign Order adopts the principle of social equality of all its Members. CHIVALRY Chivalry reflects the system of religious, moral and social codes, embodying the combination of qualities expected of an ideal Knight that developed in medieval times. Monarchs appointed some of their richer feudal subjects to be available for military service in the defense of the Monarch and his territories. Wealth was defined as those rich enough to own a horse, which is reflected in the French term "Cheval", meaning horse, as the root word for Chevalier. Those serfs so chosen received the accolade of Knight from their Monarch based on their personal courage, religious beliefs, moral standing, courtesy, and willingness to help the weak. MOTTO 4 §C 3.3 Pro Fide, Pro Utilitate Hominum For Faith, For Service to Humanity Note: – there is no “and” or “&” between the two sections of the Motto. FONS HONORUM [Fountain of Honour] In traditional chivalric terms, only the Heads of Royal Houses, or Nations in their own right, may create Orders of Chivalry. An Order, thus created, becomes a correctly established and continuing authority in its own right. The translation of this term means “Fountain of Honour”. That Fountain is created in the person of a Sovereign, which in the case of SOSJ is King Peter II of Yugoslavia. For SOSJ, Fons Honorum lies in the continuity and legal validity of the Sovereign Order as confirmed by King Peter II and, upon his death, by his brother, Prince Andre (see ICOC Register 1978).

    Lesser Feasts and Fasts 2018 Conforming to General Convention 2018 1 Preface Christians have since ancient times honored men and women whose lives represent heroic commitment to Christ and who have borne witness to their faith even at the cost of their lives. Such witnesses, by the grace of God, live in every age. The criteria used in the selection of those to be commemorated in the Episcopal Church are set out below and represent a growing consensus among provinces of the Anglican Communion also engaged in enriching their calendars. What we celebrate in the lives of the saints is the presence of Christ expressing itself in and through particular lives lived in the midst of specific historical circumstances. In the saints we are not dealing primarily with absolutes of perfection but human lives, in all their diversity, open to the motions of the Holy Spirit. Many a holy life, when carefully examined, will reveal flaws or the bias of a particular moment in history or ecclesial perspective. It should encourage us to realize that the saints, like us, are first and foremost redeemed sinners in whom the risen Christ’s words to St. Paul come to fulfillment, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” The “lesser feasts” provide opportunities for optional observance. They are not intended to replace the fundamental celebration of Sunday and major Holy Days. As the Standing Liturgical Commission and the General Convention add or delete names from the calendar, successive editions of this volume will be published, each edition bearing in the title the date of the General Convention to which it is a response.

Professor Compton is the 5th Australian Priory member to hold this grade, joining Major General (Professor) John Pearn AM RFD (Ret’d) GCStJ, Dr Neil Conn AO GCStJ, John Spencer AM GCStJ and Professor Villis Marshall AC GCStJ. There are only 21 persons in the world who hold this honour. Professor Compton was invested by the Grand Prior of the Order, His Royal Highness, Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester at Kensington Palace, London on Thursday the 1st of February 2018. “I am honoured and humbled by my appointment to Bailiff Grand Cross. It came as a great surprise. I’ve been so proud to be a member of St John for almost 45 years. Voluntary service is so important to the strong fabric of the Australian community and it is something that is in my blood, with 4 generations of family being St John members. I firmly believe that first aid is one of the most valuable life skills that can be taught,” said Professor Compton. “I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this promotion,” said Len Fiori, CEO of St John Ambulance Australia.

    • A police sergeant who was severely injured by an assailant, but with the assistance of an unarmed 17-year-old police cadet, was able to return fire, fatally striking the assailant. • A firefighter who suffered second-degree burns while rescuing an unconscious victim of a residential fire, but later rejoined his crew to combat the fire. • Two paramedics who risked their lives to rescue a man entangled in the undercarriage of an unstable subway train. • A deputy sheriff who sustained 10 gunshot wounds in order to apprehend 2 burglars and protect 2 children. • A federal officer who received a fatal gunshot wound while serving criminal arrest warrants, but was able to return fire and fatally incapacitate his assailant, thus saving the lives of his fellow team members.     ST GEORGE’S CHAPEL ARCHIVES & CHAPTER LIBRARY Research guides No.1 The Order of the Garter Foundation and composition The Most Noble Order of the Garter, the oldest surviving Order of Chivalry in the world, was founded by Edward III in or just before 1348. St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, became and remains the spiritual home of the Order and holds the annual Service of Thanksgiving on Garter Day which is attended by the Sovereign and Companions of the Order. The origins of the Order’s blue garter and motto, ‘Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense’ (Shame on Him Who Thinks Evil of It), are uncertain. The date of the foundation of the Order of the Garter is a subject of historiographical controversy, largely due to the absence of early records of the Order. The French chronicler Froissart, writing between 1370 and 1400 and drawing upon the account of the English ecclesiastic Adam of Murimuth, claimed that the foundation of the Order coincided with the feast held by Edward III at Windsor Castle in January or February of 1344. At this feast, according to Murimuth, Edward had declared an intention to establish a Round Table of three hundred knights ‘in the same manner and estate as the Lord Arthur, formerly King of England’. It is now widely believed that Froissart wrongly conflated the events of the feast held in 1344 with the actual foundation of the Order of the Garter, which occurred later in the 1340s and possibly coincided with the establishment of the College of St George, Windsor, in 1348.

    MASCULINITY AND CHIVALRY: THE TENUOUS RELATIONSHIP OF THE SACRED AND SECULAR IN MEDIEVAL ARTHURIAN LITERATURE by KACI MCCOURT DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Texas at Arlington August, 2018 Arlington, Texas Supervising Committee: Kevin Gustafson, Supervising Professor Jacqueline Fay James Warren i ABSTRACT Masculinity and Chivalry: The Tenuous Relationship of the Sacred and Secular in Medieval Arthurian Literature Kaci McCourt, Ph.D. The University of Texas at Arlington, 2018 Supervising Professors: Kevin Gustafson, Jacqueline Fay, and James Warren Concepts of masculinity and chivalry in the medieval period were socially constructed, within both the sacred and the secular realms. The different meanings of these concepts were not always easily compatible, causing tensions within the literature that attempted to portray them. The Arthurian world became a place that these concepts, and the issues that could arise when attempting to act upon them, could be explored. In this dissertation, I explore these concepts specifically through the characters of Lancelot, Galahad, and Gawain. Representative of earthly chivalry and heavenly chivalry, respectively, Lancelot and Galahad are juxtaposed in the ways in which they perform masculinity and chivalry within the Arthurian world. Chrétien introduces Lancelot to the Arthurian narrative, creating the illicit relationship between him and Guinevere which tests both his masculinity and chivalry. The Lancelot- Grail Cycle takes Lancelot’s story and expands upon it, securely situating Lancelot as the best secular knight. This Cycle also introduces Galahad as the best sacred knight, acting as redeemer for his father. Gawain, in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, exemplifies both the earthly and heavenly aspects of chivalry, showing the fraught relationship between the two, resulting in the emasculating of Gawain.

This policy is designed not only to recognize heroic acts, but to reward those officers whose performance is outstanding and those who develop innovative and ingenious methods of furthering the goals and objectives of the Department. The purpose of the Meritorious Awards Program is to create criteria and procedure for recognition of commendable acts, acts of valor, the saving of human life, exceptional service, and outstanding achievements performed by members of the Department while in the service of the community. PROCEDURES I. Meritorious Awards Review Board Established A. The Department has established a system of recommendation and review for acts that fit the general criteria above. It is in the best interest of the Department that outstanding officers be recognized so that their accomplishments set an example for all to follow. It is the responsibility of each and every officer to bring such acts to the Department's attention through the recommendation process. B. It is the Department's responsibility to document each recommendation to assure that no act fitting the enumerated criteria goes unrewarded, and to maintain the integrity of the awards so that their value is not lost or demeaned. To that end, the Meritorious Award Review Board has been established. C. Those chosen to administer this program will not take this responsibility lightly; it is a serious task.
