PREFACE It has long been a matter of contention whether John Elliott, Sr. actually made the looking glasses that he sold in Philadelphia between 1756 and 1776. In this paper 1 will attempt to prove that Elliott imported almost all of the looking glasses bearing his label and that * these looking glasses were made in England. This conclusion is based primarily on the microscopic analysis of wood samples taken from the frames of labeled Elliott looking glasses and from the frames of looking glasses labeled by English makers. Documentary and stylistic evidence further substantiates the scientific findings. I also hope to prove that John Elliott, Sr., was a cabinetmaker in Leicester, England, before he came to Philadelphia in 175)3 and that he practiced the cabinetmaking trade in Philadelphia until about 1738, when he concluded that the importation of looking glasses was a more profitable business. Before I began this project little was known about the life and career of John Elliott, Jr. In this paper I will discuss his various business activities, his involvement in Quaker charities, and his role as a looking glass dealer in Philadelphia between I78U and 1810. Microscopic analysis of wood samples taken from looking glasses labeled by John Elliott, Jr., indicate that they were made in America. Further reproduction prohibited without permission. labels, which state that he sold "Looking Glasses of American Manufacture." Whether John Elliott, Jr., actually made these looking glasses in his own shop or obtained them from a local manufactory is still a matter of conjecture. The impetus for this study of the looking glass trades of John Elliott, Sr. and Jr., came from Mr. John J.Evans, Honorary Librarian of the Decorative Arts Photographic Collection of the Winterthur Museum. Mr. Evans has long been interested in the provenance of labeled Elliott looking glasses and has been collecting photographs^- and wood samples from labeled pieces for the last several years. Naturally, his file of documented Elliott looking glasses has been invaluable to me, as have been his long considered opinions regarding the true nature of the Elliotts' business activities. It would have been impossible to reach any conclusions regarding the provenance of labeled Elliott looking glasses without the expert aid of Gordon Saltar of the Winterthur Museum. Over the years Mr. Saltar has developed techniques for the identification of wood species through microscopic analysis. His identification of the types of woods found in the frames of labeled American looking glasses and in the frames of English-made looking glasses was essential to the development of this study. He was very generous with his time in analyzing the many samples I brought to him and in discussing the characteristics of the species of concern to me. Further reproduction prohibited without permission. five extraordinary notebooks containing photographs of labeled Elliott looking glasses as well as other contemporary examples accumulated by her over the years. It is Mrs. Hughes's belief that many of the looking glasses known today in America were actually imported from Northern Europe .in the eighteenth century. Although I cannot wholly subscribe to her opinions, Mrs. Hughes's discussions of her theories with me led to an investigation of the .importation of looking glasses from Northern Europe into Philadelphia in the eighteenth century. The results of this phase of the study are to be found in Chapter V. My most grateful thanks go to my advisor, Nancy Goyne Evans, Registrar of the Winterthur Museum. She kindly shared' her own research with me and gave me valuable manuscript references to John Elliott, Sr. and Jr., and to the looking glass trade in Philadelphia. She also laboriously read, re-read, corrected, and criticized my manuscript, despite her own time-consuming commitments at the museum. ABSTRACT This thesis sets out to investigate gardens, gardeners and gardening practices in early modern England, from the mid-sixteenth century when the first horticultural manuals appeared in the English language dedicated solely to the ‘Arte’ of gardening, spanning the following century to its establishment as a subject worthy of scientific and intellectual debate by the Royal Society and a leisure pursuit worthy of the genteel. The inherently ephemeral nature of the activity of gardening has resulted thus far in this important aspect of cultural life being often overlooked by historians, but detailed examination of the early gardening manuals together with evidence gleaned from contemporary gentry manuscript collections, maps, plans and drawings has provided rare insight into both the practicalities of gardening during this period as well as into the aspirations of the early modern gardener.

    The Story of the Stars & Stripes By the US Marine Corps The story of the origin of our national flag parallels the story of the origin of our country. As our country received its birthright from the peoples of many lands who were gathered on these shores to found a new nation, so did the pattern of the Stars and Stripes rise from several origins back in the mists of antiquity to become emblazoned on the standards of our infant Republic. The star is a symbol of the heavens and the divine goal to which man has aspired from time immemorial; the stripe is symbolic of the rays of light emanating from the sun. Both themes have long been represented on the standards of nations, from the banners of the astral worshippers of ancient Egypt and Babylon to the 12-starred flag of the Spanish Conquistadors under Cortez. Continuing in favor, they spread to the striped standards of Holland and the West Indian Company in the 17th century and to the present patterns of stars and stripes on the flags of several nations of Europe, Asia, and the Americas. The first flags adopted by our Colonial forefathers were symbolic of their struggles with the wilderness of a new land. Beavers, pine trees, rattlesnakes, anchors, and various like insignia with mottoes such as “Hope”, “Liberty”, “Appeal to Heaven” or “Don’t Tread on Me” were affixed to the different banners of Colonial America. The first flag of the colonists to have any resemblance to the present Stars and Stripes was the Grand Union flag, sometimes referred to as the “Congress Colors”.

SIR, THERE are some Counties in England, whose Customs are never to be set aside and our Friends in Cumberland, as well as some of our Neighbours in Lancashire, and else-where, keep them up. It is a Custom with us every Christmas-Day in the Morning, to have, what we call an Hackin, for the Breakfast of the young Men who work about our House; and if this Dish is not dressed by that time it is Day-light, the Maid is led through the Town, between two Men, as fast as they can run with her, up Hill and down Hill, which she accounts a great shame. But as for the Receipt to make this Hackin, which is admired so much by us, it is as follows. Take the Bag or Paunch of a Calf, and wash it, and clean it well with Water and Salt ; then take some Beef-Suet, and shred it small, and shred some Apples, after they are pared and cored, very small. Then put in some Sugar, and some Spice beaten small, a little Lemon-Peel cut very fine, and a little Salt, and a good quantity of Grots, or whole Oat-meal, steep'd a Night in Milk; then mix thefe all together, and add as many Currans pick'd clean from the Stalks, and rubb'd in a coarfe Cloth ; but let them not be wash'd.

    Civic Center Plaza Flagpoles Historical Background Preceeding Events The flagpoles were installed during a period of great nationalism, especially in San Francisco. The Charter of the United Nations was signed in 1945 in the War Memorial Hall Building (Herbst Theatre); while the War Memorial Opera House, and other local venues were host to the two-month-long gathering of global unity. There were some 3500 delegation attendees from 50 nations, and more than 2500 press, radio and newsreel representatives also in attendance. (United Nations Plaza was dedicated later, in 1975, on the east side of the plaza as the symbolic leagcy of that event.) World War II was still in the minds of many, but a more recent event was the statehood of both Alaska and Hawaii during 1959, which brought thoughts of the newly designed flag to the fore, especially to school children who saluted the flag each morning. With two new stars, it looked different. And finally, John F. Kennedy was elected preident in November 1960; he was the youngest president ever elected bringing a new optimism and energy to the country. The Pavilion of American Flags Although all of the flagpoles seen today were in the original design, there does not seem to have been a specific theme for what the many staffs would display. The central two parallel rows containing a total of 18 flagpoles, known as The Pavilion of American Flags, flank the east-facing view of the Civic Center Plaza from the mayor’s office. An idea was presented that would feature flags which played an important role in the nation’s history.
