I Episcopal appointment for Scotland means homecoming for Motherwell priest Rio welcomes Pope Francis to WYD events

By Martin Dunlop

POPE Francis has been greeted by thousands of pilgrims in Brazil since arriv- ing for this week’s interna- tional World Youth Day 2013 celebrations. The trip to the world’s most populous Catholic nation marks the Holy Father’s first foreign engagement since his election as leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics in March. Shortly after his arrival in Rio de Janeiro on Monday evening, where hundreds of thousands of young people are gathering for this week’s World Youth Day celebrations, Pope Francis urged pilgrims to ‘make disciples of all nations.’ “I came to meet young people coming from all over the world, drawn to the open arms of Christ the Redeemer,” he said, referring to Rio’s world famous statue of Jesus, which overlooks the city. The feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel saw Catholics from across the north of Scotland come to the Banff parish of the same name as celebrations. A Mass was celebrated in the parish by guest preacher Fr James Bell from Inverness, who blessed a new statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel outside the church. The parish draws its name from the Carmelite Monastery founded in the town by King Robert in 1321, and Our Lady has even been suggested as a possible source for the town’s name, as a contraction of the Gaelic Bean-naomh meaning ‘holy woman.’ After Mass parishioners and visitors alike relaxed in the parish grounds as a barbecue was held in the garden, featuring a Polish contribution to the feast day as Fr Marek Kaleta prepared a number of delicacies from his homeland.

A diamond day in Rutherglen FRIENDS and family of Fr John Sweeney recently joined him for a special cele- bration of Mass, marking the diamond jubilee of his ordi- nation to the priesthood. A concelebrated Mass, with a number of clergy, took place at St Columbkille’s Church, Rutherglen, on Friday July 12. “GIVE me an army praying the Rosary and I can conquer the world.” These inspiring words of Pope Pius IX are used as daily inspi- ration for Glasgow woman Maureen Cox. “It is beyond description how powerful the Rosary really is,” Mrs Cox (right) told the SCO. “In a world that is so broken it can bring families and communities together. The Rosary takes you right through the life of Christ.” Such is Mrs Cox’s devotion to the Rosary that—three years ago, and following the birth of her second child—she decided to dedicate her future and career to making Rosaries, a talent she had learned as a teenager at Craig Lodge House of Prayer, rather than continue with her profes- sion as a molecular biologist. “It is incredible the peace that I feel from mak- ing Rosaries rather than being in a lab doing experiments—which I did absolutely love—but something just did not sit right with it for me; everything just kept coming back to the Rosary, it was something that I felt called to do,” she said. “Thankfully, my husband is very supportive of me.” Love of the Rosary Mrs Cox has been bringing her love for the Rosary to young children, both through family days, workshops—which she operates at Glas- gow University Catholic chaplaincy’s Turnbull Hall—and visits to schools and parishes. One of her main concerns, however, is that not enough young people are praying, or have enough knowledge of, the Rosary. She believes that showing children how they can make a Rosary with their own hands, and then explaining the steps of Jesus’ life to them through the Rosary, can be a valuable tool for ensuring the prayer will continue to be passed on from generation to generation. “I remember somebody saying to me: ‘you’ve got to be the change you want to see in the world,’ which is advice I have tried to take on board,” Mrs Cox said. “The Rosary has been a very, very special prayer in the Catholic Church. It has been prayed for hundreds of years, many saints and Popes have highly recommended it and urged us to pray it. “The advantages of doing so are many, and it is very important not to deprive children of such a powerful prayer tool. It is simple and easy enough for children to pray it, though, of course, it has infinite depth too. It is a wonderful way to help children begin a prayer life.” Schools and families Mrs Cox has started making Rosaries with pri- mary school children in Glasgow, a project she would like to extend to secondary schools as well as schools out with the area. Jesus told the crowd this story: “A rich man’s farm produced a big crop, and he said to himself: ‘What can I do? I don’t have a place large enough to store everything.’ “Later, he said: ‘Now I know what I’ll do. I’ll tear down my barns and build bigger ones, where I can store all my grain and other goods. Then I’ll say to myself: ‘You have stored up enough good things to last for years to come. Live it up! Eat, drink, and enjoy yourself. “But God said to him: ‘You fool! Tonight you will die. Then who will get what you have stored up?’ “This is what happens to people who store up everything for themselves, but are poor in the sight of God.” The Gospel of the Lord Friday July 26 2013 SCOTTISH CATHOLIC OBSERVER THE SCO SUPPORTS THE YEAR OF FAITH CHURCH NOTICES 15 CHURCH&PUBLICNOTICES EXPERTSERVICES
