The trip to the world’s most populous Catholic nation marks the Holy Father’s first foreign engagement since his election as leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics in March. Shortly after his arrival in Rio de Janeiro on Monday evening, where hundreds of thousands of young people are gathering for this week’s World Youth Day celebrations, Pope Francis urged pilgrims to ‘make disciples of all nations.’ “I came to meet young people coming from all over the world, drawn to the open arms of Christ the Redeemer,” he said, referring to Rio’s world famous statue of Jesus, which overlooks the city. A Mass was celebrated in the parish by guest preacher Fr James Bell from Inverness, who blessed a new statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel outside the church. The parish draws its name from the Carmelite Monastery founded in the town by King Robert in 1321, and Our Lady has even been suggested as a possible source for the town’s name, as a contraction of the Gaelic Bean-naomh meaning ‘holy woman.’ After Mass parishioners and visitors alike relaxed in the parish grounds as a barbecue was held in the garden, featuring a Polish contribution to the feast day as Fr Marek Kaleta prepared a number of delicacies from his homeland.
