THE Vatican has stepped up its efforts to broker a peace deal in the long running Syr- ian civil war. Pope Francis said that he believed peace was coming to the troubled country and a conference of regional experts meeting at the Vatican on Monday said there had to be an immediate and unconditional ceasefire. Pope Francis expressed the hope that the conflict in Syria ‘will finally come to an end this year’ and that this month’s Geneva II conference would mark the begin- ning of a peace process. The Holy Father made that observation in the context of the traditional Papal address given each January to the diplomatic corps in the Holy See. The same day a workshop of regional experts and global lead- ers, including former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, which was held in the Vatican, released a statement calling on the forth- coming peace talks to include all participants in the fighting, including Iran. “To build the basis for regional peace, Geneva II needs to ensure inclusive participation of all par- ties to this conflict, within the region and beyond,” it said. WWW.SCONEWS.CO.UK FRIDAY JANUARY 17 2014 SCOTTISH CATHOLIC OBSERVER LETTERS 9

LETTER OF THE WEEK Thanks for the old and the new, but where are the rest?

I WISH the new Bishop of Dunkeld every blessing and support in his new role. As with several , and indeed many parishes, awaiting reinforcements, we must take the time to thank the clergy who have stepped into the breach in the interim period. In Dundee that would be Canon Basil Sullivan, among others. He is a priest of many years who did not shy away from the extra responsibility in what is all too often a thankless task as an administrator. We must also remember the other administrators, such as Motherwell’s (Bishop Joseph Toal) and the retired bishops who continue to discreetly help steer the ship, so to speak, such as Bishops Vincent Logan, Peter Moran and to name but a few. With all due respect to the fact that the Church does and must work to its own timetable, I have to ask how long before the other Scottish dioceses without bishops, such as my own diocese, Paisley, are freed from this limbo of sorts? Indeed, how long before the Bishops’ Conference of Scotland is restored to its full strength? M Murray PAISLEY

Our weekly series on Children’s Liturgy has lesson plans and activity suggestions for use with young people who are on the path to Christ Each week, Catechists will find readings and Psalm responses, complemented by prayer, reflection, FAITH discussion questions, and activities. Please feel free to use them as you wish The lessons are created by Adorer-theologians using the lens of the spirituality of St Maria de Mattias, which also embraces precious blood spirituality FIRST While this is the starting point for the lessons, readers are invited to approach them however the spirit moves you The Church is concerned with the availability and understanding of scripture for children who have their rightful place in the Church. In light of this SCO aims to provide a useful tool in drawing children closer to KIDS the Catholic Faith
