SOMERSET he spiritual experiences of “Mistress Rutherford” were first published in the Miscellany XIII of the Scottish History Society in 2004.T 1 The exact identity of “Mistress Rutherford” is not known, but she was a niece by marriage to John Muir, laird of Anniston. She was born at the beginning of the seventeenth century, lost her mother at the age of four and her father at the age of nine, and was then brought up by relatives. At the age of fourteen she was sent to Bethia Aird’s school for girls in Edinburgh. Bethia Aird was the daughter of William Aird, who had been minister of St Cuthbert’s in Edinburgh. Her brother John Aird was minister of Newbattle and she was one of Samuel Rutherford’s correspondents. The young “Mistress Rutherford” was thus brought into the heart of Presbyterian religious society in Edinburgh at a critical time when James VI was bent on conforming the Scottish Church to the practices of the Church of England. She was present, for instance, at the communion in the West Kirk, Edinburgh, on Sabbath 7th March 1619 when the minister Richard Dickson administered the Lord’s Supper to sitting communicants, after the Presbyterian manner; for which he was deprived and imprisoned in Dumbarton Castle.2 Mistress Rutherford’s account of her life was written at an unspecified time after the events. She begins at the age of ten and goes through her schooling in Edinburgh, her marriage, her settling in Ulster 1 D. -

Mr Froudef charges him with preaching without authority and with illegally assuming the priestly office. Professor Lorimer| alleges that, in his early ministry, he denied the doctrine of the Atonement. Mr Tytler§ has sought to prove that he intended murder, by conspiring against the life of Cardinal Beaton. Having ventured on the elucidation of his history, I have investigated the charges brought against him, with care and, I trust, impartiality. The result will be found in these pages. Meanwhile I may summarise my deductions, and say that the martyr has, from the inquiry, come forth unstained. He did not claim prophetic powers ; he preached with canonical sanction ; he did not act as a priest or ordained clergyman ; he taught the doctrine of the Atonement through- out his whole ministry ; he did not conspire against Beaton, and if he knew of the conspiracy he condemned it. -

Newmilns & Greenholm Community Action Plan 2021-2026 Profile 1. Brief Description and History 1.1 Early History Evidence of early habitation can be found across The Valley, with the earliest sites dating from around 2000 BC. To the east of Loudoun Gowf Course, evidence has been found of the existence of a Neolithic stone circle and a Neolithic burial mound lies underneath the approach to the seventh green. A site in Henryton uncovered a Neolith barrow containing stone axes (c. 1500 BC) and a Bronze Age cairn dating from about 1000 BC (the cairn itself contains cists which are thought to have been made by bronze weapons or tools). Following this early period, from around AD 200 evidence exists of not only a Roman camp at Loudoun Hill, but also a Roman road running through The Valley to the coast at Ayr. The camp was uncovered through quarry work taking place south of Loudoun Hill but tragically much of this evidence has been lost. According to local workmen, many of the uncovered remains & artefacts were taken with the rest of the quarried materials to be used in road construction projects. Typically, little is known of The Valley's history during the Dark Ages, but it seems likely that an important battle was fought around AD 575 at the Glen Water. In addition, given the strong strategic importance of Newmilns' position as a suitable fording place and a bottleneck on one of Scotland's main east-west trade routes, it is not unlikely that other battles and skirmishes occurred during this period. -

SCOTTISH CALVINISM: A DARK, REPRESSIVE FORCE? 00NALD MACLEOD, PRINCIPAL, FREE CHURCH COLLEGE, EDINBURGH INTRODUCTION 'Scottish Calvinism has been a dark, repressive force.' The thesis is a common one; almost, indeed, an axiom. Few seem to realise, however, that the thesis cannot be true without its corollary: the Scots are a repressed people, lacking the confidence to express themselves and living in fear of their sixteenth-century Super Ego. The corollary, in turn, immediately faces a paradox. Scotland has never been frightened to criticise Calvinism. This is particularly true of our national literature. John Knox has been the object of relentless opprobrium, the Covenanters have been pilloried as epitomes of bigotry and intolerance, Thomas Boston portrayed as a moron, the Seceders as kill joys and Wee Frees as antinomian Thought Police. The phenomenon is unparalleled in the literature of any other part of the United Kingdom. There has been no comparable English assault on Anglicanism. Nor has there been a similar Irish critique of Catholicism. Scotland has been unique in the ferocity with which its literature has turned on its religion. The Kirk's brood may have been rebellious. They have certainly not been repressed. DETRACTORS The most influential detractor was, of course, Waiter Scott, whose heroic, well-rounded Cavaliers and Jacobites contrast vividly with his narrow, bigoted Presbyterians and Covenanters. But Scott was not the first. Robert Burns had already set the agenda. In Holy Willie 's Prayer, for example, he stereotypes and lampoons the 'typical' Calvinist elder, famed only for his polemical cant, tippling orthodoxy and blind hypocrisy. NlSBET's statement as to the family of Wishart having derived descent from Robert, an illegitimate son of David, Earl of Huntingdon, who was styled Guishart on account of his heavy slaughter of the Saracens, is an evident fiction.* The name Guiscard, or Wiscard, a Norman epithet used to designate an adroit or cunning person, was conferred on Robert Guiscard, son of Tancrede de Hauterville of Nor- mandy, afterwards Duke of Calabria, who founded the king- dom of Sicily. This noted warrior died on the 27th July 1085. His surname was adopted by a branch of his House, and the name became common in Normandy and throughout France. Guiscard was the surname of the Norman kings of Apulia in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. John Wychard is mentioned as a small landowner in the Hundred de la Mewe, Buckinghamshire, in the reign of Henry III. (I2i6-i272)/1- During the same reign and that of Edward I. (1272-1307), are named as landowners, Baldwin Wyschard or Wistchart, in Shropshire; Nicholas Wychard, in Warwickshire ; Hugh Wischard, in Essex; and William Wischard, in Bucks.j In the reign of Edward I. Julian Wye- chard is named as occupier of a house in the county of Oxford.§ A branch of the House of Wischard obtained lands in Scotland some time prior to the thirteenth century. John Wischard was sheriff of Kincardineshire in the reign of Alexander II. (1214-1249). Church and Community in Later Medieval Glasgow: An Introductory Essay* by John Nelson MINER** Later medieval Glasgow has not yet found its place in urban history, mainly because most writers have concentrated on the modern, industrial period and those historians who have devoted attention to the pre-industrial city have failed to reach any consensus as to the extent of its modest expansion in the period circa 1450 to 1550 or the reasons behind it. In this study, the specific point is made that it is the ecclesiastical structure of Glasgow that will best serve towards an appreciation of the total urban community. This central point has not so far been developed even in the use of the published sources, which have to be looked at afresh in the above context.
