Steve’s new book honours Perth’s proud WWI service

Mgr Pat McInally reports on this year’s two parish pilgrimages to Spain:

In addition to the names of those who died, Steve has collected the names of all who took up arms from St John’s parish and from the Catholic School, serving as a reminder of the huge sacrifice they made.
“In October St Columba’s, Cupar, embarked on a Pilgrimage with a difference, following in the footsteps of St Ignatius of Loyola. Over 70 pilgrims signed up to take part this year, so it had to be split into separate pilgrimages.”

Steve says, “As you turn the pages - please remember to pray for their souls. e publication ends with the great penitential Psalm, ‘Out of the depths I have cried to you, O Lord’, Psalm 129 - as an invocation to prayer.”

“e day started with ‘Lauds’ at 7.30am, sung by the monks, and ended with ‘Vespers’, accompanied by the Boys Choir, the oldest Choir School in Europe. With sunshine and blue skies we took the opportunity to travel on the Funicular Railway to the top of the Mountain, walking down to mountain path and marvelling at the panoramic views all the way down.”
Together with Deacon Harry Schnitker, parish historian Steve was the joint editor of the 2007 publication, ‘From Persecution

to Integration: e Scottish Catholic Experience as seen from Perth - 1685-2007’,

which marked the 175th anniversary of the Perth church.

“Monserrat was followed by two nights in Zaragoza where we joined in the celebrations of Our Lady of the Pillar, the second largest Feast Day in Spain. In the early days of the Church St James travelled to Spain preaching the Gospel but, on arriving at Zaragoza where he was having little success, Our Lady appeared to him at the top of a Pillar encouraging him to return to Jerusalem, where he became Bishop, and was later martyred.”
In a foreword to the new publication, Deacon Harry writes: ‘e First World War’s centenary commemorations are all behind us and the war is passing from memory into history. It is important, then, to recall those who fought and those who died, to ensure that at least something of their lives, cut short by violence, is remembered. Steve Clayes’ meticulous research has certainly managed to save that little something, the precious details of lives that were so strongly rooted in the Catholic community in early twentiethcentury Perth, but that ended overseas.’

Monsignor Canon John Harty, parish priest of St. Mungo’s Alloa and a good friend passed away in the early hours of Thursday morning in Larbert Hospital. He was sur- rounded by his two sisters Eileen and Maureen and his brother who had been at his bed side over the last few days.

    History of the Clan Macnab part five: The Dewars of St. Fillan The following articles on the Dewar Sept of the Clan Macnab were taken from several sources. No attempt has been made to consolidate the articles; instead they are presented as in the original source, which is given at the beginning of each section. Hence there will be some duplication of material. David Rorer Dewar means roughly “custodian” and is derived from the Gallic “Deoradh,” a word originally meaning “stranger” or “wanderer,” probably because the person so named carried St. Fillan’s relics far a field for special purposes. Later, the meaning of the word altered to “custodian.” The relics they guarded were the Quigrich (Pastoral staff); the Bernane (chapel Bell), the Fergy (possibly St. Fillan’s portable alter), the Mayne (St. Fillan’s arm bone), the Maser (St. Fillan’s manuscript). There were, of course other Dewars than the Dewars of St. Fillan and the name today is most familiar as that of a blended scotch whisky produced by John Dewar and Sons Ltd St. Fillan is mentioned in the Encyclopedia Britannica, 14th edition of 1926, as follows: Fillan, Saint or Faelan, the name of two Scottish saints, of Irish origin, whose lives are of a legendary character. The St. Fillan whose feast is kept on June 20 had churches dedicated to him at Ballyheyland, Queen’s county, Ireland, and at Loch Earn, Perthshire (see map of Glen Dochart). The other, who is commerated on January 9, was specially venerated at Cluain Mavscua in County Westmeath, Ireland. Also beginning about the 8th or 9th century at Strathfillan, Perthshire, Scotland, where there was an ancient monastery dedicated to him.

During Mass, Bishop Joseph Toal blessed the new Guardian Angel Window Panel and dedicated SCSS to the protecon of the Guardian Angels. A prayer card with a picture of the window and the new Naonal Safeguarding Prayer together with a candle again replicang the image of the window was given to all delegates. SCSS also commissioned a larger candle for each Diocesan Safeguarding Advisory Group. At the end of the conference these candles were taken back to each Diocesan Office and have already been used at other more local safeguarding events and Safeguarding Advisory Group meengs. Message from Bishop Toal This is the first newsleer from Tina Campbell and the SCSS staff as she completes her first year in post. This is my first newsleer as President of SCSS and I would like to express my thanks to and appreciaon for all the volunteers across Scotland who give of their me so willingly in our parishes and in our Catholic sociees and organisaons to help children and the vulnerable and to ensure their safety while benefing from the Church's spiritual and pastoral ministry or while parcipang in its varied social acvies.

The articles were written to explain and to describe the origin and de\elopment of the Armorial Bearings of the ancient Dioceses of Scotland. These Coats of arms are, and have been more or less con- tinuously, used by the Scottish Episcopal Church since they came into use in the middle of the 17th century, though whether the disestablished Church has a right to their use or not is a vexed question. Fox-Davies holds that the Church of Ireland and the Episcopal Chuich in Scotland lost their diocesan Coats of Arms on disestablishment, and that the Welsh Church will suffer the same loss when the Disestablishment Act comes into operation ( Public Arms).

    12 TWO ASPECTS OF GAVIN DOUGLASO Gavin Douglas was born to be conservative. Embedded in feudalism and the pre Counter Reformation church he was not the kind of person to cause a ripple in history. Literature gave him his fame. There single handed with his translation of Vergil's Aeneid he brought Scotland into the Renaissance. History robbed him of the influence he might have had. The manuscripts of his Aeneid were put away and forgotten, and by the time they were brought to light his language had become obsolete, so now a not infrequent response to the mention of his name is 'Who's he?'. 'He' was two years younger than James IV and finished his Aeneid translation in 1513, the same year as Flodden. Flodden was especially tragic because it came at a time when the nobles, of whom so many fell, were still very important to Scotland. In England and France feudalism might be looking at the beginning of the end because substitution of money for service was making barons no longer indispensable, but in Scotland not only was Lowland feudalism influenced by Highland clan ideals but the continual succession to the throne of minors had nobles playing an indispensable if not always concerted part in government. When Gavin Douglas was a boy feudalism was fighting fit. James III was the king who upset the nobles by preferring the company of a group of commoners to theirs. He more than upset them when he conferred a title on his architect friend Cochrane. Cochrane not only upgraded his attire and took to going round with a small entourage, which after all was only airs and graces, but he also interposed himself between the king and petitioners.

The attribution to David I of the establishment of most of the Scottish episcopal sees has, if only through repetition, become a convention. Yet, while historians have bee generan ni l agreement about David's work, they have differed profoundly as to the details. A very recent writer has gone so far as to remark, "Before David's time St Andrews was the only bishopric Scotlann i d proper addedmorr e o h ; x esi probably eight." 1 Other modern historians have allowe r thredo thao e tw tsee s were founde e reigth nn i d of David's predecessor, Alexander I.2 The older historians and chroniclers were less confident about the extent of David's work.     Proc Soc Antiq Scot 142 (2012), 201–244 THE KILMICHAEL GLASSARY BELL-SHRINE | 201 The Kilmichael Glassary Bell-shrine David H Caldwell*, Susy Kirk†, Gilbert Márkus‡, Jim Tate§ and Sharon Webb ǁ ABSTRACT The Kilmichael Glassary Bell-shrine is one of the treasures of National Museums Scotland. This paper reassesses the circumstances of its discovery, its context and importance, and its role as a relic of a saint, not Moluag, as previously suggested, but possibly Columba. The wider use of handbells in the early medieval church is also considered. The bell-shrine was found in 1814, on the farm of Torbhlaren, in the parish of Kilmichael Glassary, in mainland Argyll, probably near to where it was venerated. The bell inside it dates to the 7th–9th century, the shrine to the first half of the 12th century. The latter bears evidence in its design of a mixed artistic heritage, including local, Irish and Scandinavian influence. Alternative hypotheses, that it represents the artistic output of the Kingdom of the Isles or Dunkeld, in the kingdom of the Scots, are presented. Details are provided of a technological examination of bell and shrine and a list of other early Scottish handbells is included. Galatians 6:14 Message from Fr Andrew Murphy SSC (Tel.: 07920 596990) Corpus Christi and Petertide My friends in Christ, the beginning and the end of this coming month of June see two important liturgy days, firstly Corpus Christi and the second we call Petertide or Peter’s tide being the Sunday nearest to 29th June which is the festival day of SS Peter and Paul. At Corpus Christi, meaning the body and blood of Christ, we celeb- rate His presence in the Eucharist, normally four days after Pentecost but nowadays sometimes on the following Sunday. The Petertide season in- cludes the days before and around that feast and is special in the Anglican calendar for it is in the days around then that most deacons and priests are ordained into the church. The two feasts are not unconnected, for it is only ordained priests who can celebrate Mass and consecrate the sac- red bread and wine which becomes Christ’s body and blood. When Christ handed Peter the footsteps of St Peter who himself wrestled with fol- keys of Heaven, and declared that he was “the lowing Christ and later endured hardships to be rock” upon which his church was to be built, he faithful to his master.
