The arrangement of the machinery is such as to utilize space and at the same time afford plenty of room on all sides for the at- tendants. All steam piping and wiring is under the floor, which greatly facilitates the moving of the machinery in case repairs are needed. The generators and en- gines are tastefully decorated and numbered, and each generator is provided with a handsome brass stand containing a group of in- candescent lamps. The rooms are also lighted by arc lamps. The switchboard, which is a very attractive affair, is shown in Fig. 3, and is located in the cen- ter of the Light Street end of the upper room between the doors. In the large additional space unoccupied in the engine room the company has located a large number of modern machine tools, this portion being separated from the engine room by a partition; space is left, however, between the top of this partition and the roof to permit the passage of the crane so as to serve both engine and machine room. The boiler room is located in a one story building attached to the main power house. The room measures 112 X 46 ft. and is lighted by windows in the roof. The plant has a capacity of 2,000 h. p. and consists of eight 250 h. p. Campbell water tube boilers arranged in four batteries of two each. They are provided with Roney mechanical stokers which are operated by two West- inghouse engines. The front of the boiler room is on a level with the street, and as the ground gradually rises toward the rear of the building, the rear of the boiler room is considerably below the surface of the ground. Here is located the coal vault.

It is also commonly referred to as train transport. In contrast to road transport, where vehicles merely run on a prepared surface, rail vehicles are also directionally guided by the tracks on which they run. Track usually consists of steel rails installed on sleepers/ties and ballast, on which the rolling stock, usually fitted with metal wheels, moves. However, other variations are also possible, such as slab track where the rails are fastened to a concrete foundation resting on a prepared subsurface. Rolling stock in railway transport systems generally has lower frictional resistance when compared with highway vehicles and the passenger and freight cars (carriages and wagons) can be coupled into longer trains. The operation is carried out by a railway company, providing transport between train stations or freight customer facilities. Power is provided by locomotives which either draw electrical power from a railway electrification system or produce their own power, usually by diesel engines. Most tracks are accompanied by a signalling system.

The History of the Aeri de Montserrat The cable car from the bottom of Montserrat mountain to Montserrat monastery first started running in 1930. The Gondola Tramway up to the Montserrat in Spain was build in 1930 by the German Manufacturer Adolf Bleichert. It travels at a speed of 5 metres per second and at a gradient of up to 45%. The Track is over 1350 m long and the Height-Difference is about 544m. Each Gondola can take 35 + 1 persons. The main engine have the power of 84 PS. What's it like travelling on the cable car to Montserrat? Taking the cable car to Montserrat is not just a means of transport - it is an experience in its own right. It is worth mentioning that this is a trip that is not for the faint hearted - you will be travelling 1350 metres up the mountain in a small hanging car!     Finished Vehicle Logistics by Rail in Europe Version 3 December 2017 This publication was prepared by Oleh Shchuryk, Research & Projects Manager, ECG – the Association of European Vehicle Logistics. Foreword The project to produce this book on ‘Finished Vehicle Logistics by Rail in Europe’ was initiated during the ECG Land Transport Working Group meeting in January 2014, Frankfurt am Main. Initially, it was suggested by the members of the group that Oleh Shchuryk prepares a short briefing paper about the current status quo of rail transport and FVLs by rail in Europe. It was to be a concise document explaining the complex nature of rail, its difficulties and challenges, main players, and their roles and responsibilities to be used by ECG’s members. However, it rapidly grew way beyond these simple objectives as you will see. The first draft of the project was presented at the following Land Transport WG meeting which took place in May 2014, Frankfurt am Main. It received further support from the group and in order to gain more knowledge on specific rail technical issues it was decided that ECG should organise site visits with rail technical experts of ECG member companies at their railway operations sites. These were held with DB Schenker Rail Automotive in Frankfurt am Main, BLG Automotive in Bremerhaven, ARS Altmann in Wolnzach, and STVA in Valenton and Paris. As a result of these collaborations, and continuous research on various rail issues, the document was extensively enlarged. The document consists of several parts, namely a historical section that covers railway development in Europe and specific EU countries; a technical section that discusses the different technical issues of the railway (gauges, electrification, controlling and signalling systems, etc.); a section on the liberalisation process in Europe; a section on the key rail players, and a section on logistics services provided by rail.

    “Notes on the Working of a Rack Railway.” BY WILLIAX TIIEODORELCCY, M. Inst. C.E. ALTIIOUG~this subject might appear to be of but limited interest, it may be pointed out that during recent years the loads hauled on rack railways have been largely increased, while their mileage has been steadilyextended. In Chilealone during,1913 there were opened to traffic, in the Arica-La Paz Railway and the Southern Longitudinal Railway, 1,072 kilometres (666 miles) of line which would not have been practicable without the use of the rack; and as regards loads it was stated in 1911 that the maximum tractive power employed in Switzerland was 11,000 kilograms (24,244 lbs.), while the work now under consideration may be takenas demanding 50,000 lbs. Th‘e interesting Paper presented to The Institution recently by Mr.Brodie H. Henderson, M. Inst. C.E., on “The Transandine Railway,”deals chiefly withthe location and construction of the two railwaysforming theroute betweenArgentina and Chile. The following notes are intended to give further information as to the practical details of working on the Chilian Transandine Railway, the more severe of the two lines, which the Author, while assistant manager, had opportunities of observing and modifying.
