TONIGHT’S GAME The Flyers take on the Carolina Hurricanes tonight in their fifth game of the season and second at home. The Flyers took a 2-0 second intermission lead on goals by Brayden Schenn and Claude Giroux, with Schenn’s coming on the power play and Giroux’s going down as the Flyers’ first shorthanded goal of the season. Carolina clawed back in the third, picking up a goal from Victor Rask 7:58 into the frame and then getting the equalizer from Brett Pesce with 3:45 to play. The Flyers overcame a hat trick from Jeff Skinner, who opened the scoring 1:56 into the game with the only goal of the first period. Voracek tied it just 23 seconds into the second period, but Skinner took the lead back with his second at 3:37. Brayden Schenn tied the game again just 58 seconds later, and with 3:31 left in the period, Sean Couturier gave the Flyers a 3-2 lead. Skinner finished the feat at 9:07 of the third and the game ended up in overtime, where Gostisbehere finished the contest 1:42 into the extra session. Tuesday, February 23 – Carolina 3, Flyers 1 at PNC Arena: The Flyers outshot the Hurricanes 37-18, but Carolina picked up three unanswered goals and skated off with a 3-1 victory. But Carolina responded with two second-period goals, one coming when Joakim Nordstrom intercepted an outlet pass from Michal Neuvirth, and the other when Jordan Staal hopped on a puck that took an odd bounce behind the Flyers net and came out in front. Chris Wagner started the scoring at 11:24 of the first period, giving the Ducks a 1-0 intermission advantage. Wayne Simmonds scored his third of the year on a power play 4:52 into the second to tie things up, and Matt Read potted his fourth on a highlight-reel rush just after the halfway point of the second to make it 2-1. Corey Perry tied it just over six minutes later, and then with 8:26 to play, Ryan Garbutt picked up the eventual game-winner.
