The 2003-2004 Season marks 75 wonderful years of the Fort Wayne Civic Theatre enriching the cultural landscape of the Fort Wayne community and Northeast with Broadway quality theatrical stage productions showcasing the extraordinary talents of local scenic and performing artists, and dedicated volunteers, on stage and behind the scenes. Be a part of the magic they create with each production and join us for Footloose, and enjoy the benefits of becoming a member for the 2004-2005 starting with Crazy For You - the Gershwin musical. c We are proud to announce the 2004-2005 season: Crazy For You, The Miss Firecracker Contest, the musical A Christmas Carol (Alan Menken-Disney Composer), West Side Story The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) (a hysterical fast-paced comedy including all his plays), and a concert version of A Tribute to the Music of Rodgers & Hammerstein and Andrew Lloyd Webber

I especially want to thank all the volunteers and staff for bringing to life this heart felt, poignant piece of theatre about life, prejudice, acceptance and true friendship.

Driving Miss Daisy - Winner of the 1998 Pulitzer Prize and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Play. Driving Miss Daisy ran on off-Broadway for a total of 1.299 performances originally staring Dana Ivey as Daisy and who later reprised his role in the movie version staring and . The movie won four Oscars in 1990; Best Picture, Best Actress - Jessica Tandy, Best Adapted Screenplay - , and Best Makeup.

This eloquent play by Alfred Uhry is a warm-hearted, humorous and affecting study of the unlikely relationship between an aging, crotchety white Southern Jewish lady and a proud, soft-spoken Black man. The place is the Deep South, the time 1948, just prior to the civil rights movement. Unspoken signs of prejudice are revealed through each character as their relationships develop rn,lllP "• eo|8 ;lazie r and, with time slowly lead to the path of understanding and acceptance...? As Hoke surmises so clearly, ''Things changin', but they ain't change all dat much." The aging Daisy strives to t hold on to her independence, her right to drive, whereas Hoke strives to gain independence, equality and respect. Daisy and Hoke both come to realize they have more in common than they ever believed possible.

In rehearsing this piece, the cast and 1 explored the proper protocol of behavior in the South, for blacks and whites, during this period when Martin Luther King's dream, his vision, was taking root in American society. Does Hoke always take his hat off before entering a room? Are Daisy's expectations of Hoke as a chauffeur realistic or signs of prejudice? Or the simple act of Boolie shaking Hoke's hand; would he? What we sometimes take for granted today was not the way of life in Altanta back then. The lessons are still before us, sometime subtle opportunities, to accept the rich gifts that each human being has to offer.

She was recently named Best Ac tress for her role as Ethel Thayer in ON GOLDEN POND at Arena Theatre, and has appeared in many Civic roles. Among them are: Golde in FIDDLER ON THE ROOF (Anthony Award) and M'Lynn in the 1991 production of STEEL MAGNOLIAS. Most recently she was seen as Solange La Fitte in the Civic's production of FOLLIES. A (. published playwright of children's musicals, Nancy is currently a loan officer for Ruoff Mortgage and is a mem ber of the Fort Wayne Youtheatre Board of Directors.

Tony McCarroI (Hoke Coleburn) is happy to once again be on the Civic Theatre stage. Past roles include Walter Lee in A RAISIN IN THE SUN, for which he won an Anthony Award for best actor in a drama, and the Scare crow in THE WIZ. He thanks his family and friends for their support and "would like to steal one moment in time to tell my mother and my father that I love them." Tony is currently an adult psychological rehabilitation specialist at The Carriage House.

( John P. Gardner (Boolie Werthan) is appearing for the first time on the Civic Theatre stage. No stranger to the stage, his experience spans several years and several states including California, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and of course, Indiana. John was seen in UNDER MILK WOOD at Firelands College Theatre and in BRIGADOON at the Huron Summer Playhouse, both in Ohio. He recently was on the Arena Dinner Theatre Stage in CALIFORNIA SUITE and at the PAC in THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES (a benefit for the Fort Wayne Women's Bureau). John currently serves as Senior Pastor and teacher at Plymouth Congregational Church of Fort Wayne, UCC. 2004-2005

RL S* [%] SEASON ? *s

West Side StOiy January 21 - February 6,2005 Leonard Bernstein Musical - Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is transported to 1950's New York City, as two young idealistic lovers find themselves caught between warring street gangs, the "American" Jets and the "Puerto Rican" Sharks. Their struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice is one of the most innovative, heart-wrenching and relevant musical dramas of our time. (PG-13 c jdult language and content) The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) March 4-13,2005 Comedy - All 37 plays in 97 minutes with three prankster actors!! - An irreverent, fast-paced romp through the Bard's plays, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged), was London's longest-running comedy. Shakespeare has never been lampooned with such disrespect before and no doubt never will be again. All his sonnets are reduced to eight lines, his comedies are condensed into one short sketch, and the tragedies are ridiculed , unmercifully. Hamlet is abridged into a two-minute sketch that can even be performed backwards. The three overgrown pranksters who perform appear to fully enjoy their descent into adolescence. (PG-13 adult language and content) A Tribute To The Music of ( Rodgers and Hammerstein and Andrew Lloyd Webber May 6 - 22,2005 Family Musical Concert - Amusical tribute to three of the greatest composers of musical theatre performed in concert style staging with lush orchestrations and enchanting soloists. This one hour and twenty-eight minute tribute honors Rodgers & Hammerstein in Act One with songs "There Is Nothin' Like a Dame" from South Pacific to "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'" from Oklahoma, Act Two salutes the talents of Lord Webber with the selections of Memory from Cats to All I Ask of You from The Phantom of the Opera. (G) >v Production Crew

Daniel Woodruff (Stage Manager) is delighted to be back at the Civic Theatre in his first show as Stage Manager. He first appeared in SOUTH PACIFIC in 1990 after returning from 8 years working his craft in Hollywood. He has also been seen here in RUMORS, an Anthony winning performance, A RAISIN IN THE SUN, TO KILL A MOCK INGBIRD, STATE FAIR and SINGIN* IN THE RAIN. He was also seen at the Arena Theatre in AN APPEARANCE OF MURDER (Arena Award), PHILADELPHIA STORY and HARVEY among others. He recently directed DEARLY DEPARTED and DIAL M FOR MUR DER there as well. No stranger to any stage in town he has also appeared in CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU, MY FATHER at First Presbyterian. His favorite roles were for his good friend, Harvey Cocks at Youtheatre as Christopher Robin's father in WINNIE- THE-POOH and as Thomas Edison in YANKEE DOODLE. He gives thanks to his lovely and gracious wife, Rhonda and to his "boys", Squeeker and Dinkums. ' Arwen Courtney (Assistant Stage Manager) has been with the Civic for many shows as the sound board operator and is expand ing her theatre experience as assistant stage manager. She appeared on the Civic stage as Violet Peterson in IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE and as a lady in waiting in HAMLET. She wishes to thank her Mom and Dad for "putting up with her!"
