Today we welcome the players, management, officials and supporters of Nairn County to Bellslea Park for our Press & Journal Highland League tie.

Unless you have been on the moon recently then you will be aware of the changes that have taken place at Nairn County and while it will undoubtedly take time I have no doubt they will remain the strong club they have always been. Sometimes change is good and in Ronnie Sharp they

have a manger who has done well at Nairn before and More disappointing however is the loss of Courtney obviously has the club at heart. We know from experience Cooper to Keith. He is a great lad and a very good that is a good thing. Likewise, with Donald as chairman player but unfortunately his work over the past season they have a club stalwart who will want nothing other or so has hampered his appearances. This is something than the best for his club. Like the Mackintosh family clubs at our level have to live with sometimes but that before him, he is a Nairn County supporter first and is football and we wish Courtney all the best at his foremost. As we all are at this level. We wish all the new new club. I wouldn’t rule out seeing him the black and

regime at Station Park the very best of luck for the future. white jersey sometime again in the future.

We have had a decent start to the season with three Back to the game today and we know just how difficult victories in our opening three games. Ok, Wednesday night a task we have in front of as. With a new manager and was won on penalties but it was a terrific performance to team of players all desperate to get off to a good start watch and nobody would have argued had we won the tie is something we will need to match if we are to take in 90 minutes. Also satisfying is the fact we have given anything from the game. four players their first team debuts. Liam Norris, Jack Simpson, Marc Summers at Fort William and Sean Douglas Hopefully we can capitalise on our good start and keep

at Formartine Utd all coming on as substitutes and all the three points here at Bellslea. contributing well to the team. This is one of the most

satisfying parts of the job, seeing youngsters breaking into the team and hopefully being the stars of the future. It is Come awa the Broch, up to these lads, like many others before them, to continue with the good progress and get into the team on Finlay a regular basis. That hard work can only be done by them.

A good start to the League campaign with wins over Strathspey Thistle and Fort William? What has impresses you most in those games?

I think the fact that we have kept two clean sheets is the main positive to take out of the first two games. As a team we have looked solid and opposing teams have created very little against us. Our shape defensively has looked good so if we continue to concede few goals, then we know we have the firepower to score so that will stand us in good stead going forward. We could have been better in possession at times but I think the most important thing is to get off to a good start and thankfully we have done that. You do not want to fall behind the leading pack too early so it’s pleasing to get the points on the board and start off with two wins. Then it’s just a lottery, although I thought all of our pens were Mark excellent, including Leask's. Now for a trip to Buckie which will be as tough if not tougher than Formartine as they are undoubtedly the form team in the league but cup games are one-off so we will go there looking to progress.

Nairn county player profiles 3. Kenny McKenzie (midfielder): Now entering his second season with Nairn County, this languid wide player impressed all observers with his cool head whenever he was in possession of the ball last season. Arrived from Fort William last summer, he is capable of playing at full back or wide in midfield on the left hand side as well as in the middle of the park.

4. Paul Macleod (defender): A solid defender who wears his heart on his sleeve. Came through the youth ranks at Nairn County and is now among the most experienced players in the squad. Capable of operating at right back or in the centre of the defence, one thing he can never be accused of is a lack of passion or commitment to the cause.

5. Calum Riddell (defender): A summer signing from Nairn St Ninian who impressed during a trial period over the summer. Good in the air and solid across the ground, he is also able to play in centre midfield. Originally came through the Nairn County youth ranks and after six years away, he is eager to make up for lost time in the Scottish Highland League.

6. Wayne Mackintosh (midfielder): Club captain and one of the longest serving players in the first team squad having debuted back in 2004. He is now enjoying his testimonial season having won the Highland League Cup once and North of Scotland Cup twice. He is relishing the challenge of leading Ronnie Sharp’s young and vibrant side.

7. Ross Naismith (midfielder): An attack-minded player with an eye for the spectacular, he is now receiving the chance to establish himself as one of the first names on the team sheet after four years as a bit-part player. A real flair player whose creativity and set piece delivery is going to play an important part in Nairn’s attacking ambitions this season.

8. Callum Maclean (midfielder): This neat and tidy midfielder is entering his second season with the club having worked his way into the team during his maiden campaign at Station Park. Rarely wastes a pass and likes to keep possession ticking over at the base of the Nairn midfield, he is extremely comfortable in possession and has the ability to unlock an opposing defence.

9. Gary Kerr (attacker): Returned to Nairn County in the summer after a year away from the club. This bustling centre forward opened his account for the season with a thumping header against Deveronvale in the second game of the season. He is eager to prove himself in County colours after being limited to just a handful of appearances in his first spell at the club.

10. Gregg Main (midfielder): A tough-tackling midfield player who has spent his entire career at Station Park, except for a season on loan at Nairn St Ninian. He has won two North of Scotland Cups and the Highland League Cup during a decorated spell at Station Park. He is capable of playing deep in midfield or behind the strikers.

11. Jordan Macrae (attacker): This young talent with bags of potential has stepped into the first team squad seamlessly following promotion from the under-20s. A goals-laden season in the North of Scotland League for the U20s led to him being made a permanent member of the first team squad at only 18. His skills, pace and finishing ability mark him out as a potential star of the future.

12. Dylan Mackenzie (attacker): Another young talent who has been brought to the club to play first team football despite his young age. He was brought in from Clachnacuddin in the summer having bagged a hat trick for their under -20s against Nairn County in the North of Scotland League last season. A fast and direct player, he is another with the potential to go on and establish himself as a regular in the team over the next few seasons.

17. Jamie Mackay (attacker): Back in the Scottish Highland League and at Nairn County after a spell playing amateur football in Inverness, this former Brora Rangers and Lossiemouth player impressed enough during a pre- season trial to be handed a deal. His quick and direct style on the right hand side of the attack has already proved to be a thorn in the side of opposition defences.

18. Jack Maclean (midfielder): This local youngster was thrown in at the deep end on the opening day of the season as he made his first start for the club against Brora Rangers. He did not let the occasion faze him though with an assured display in the centre of the park which he followed up with another confidence-boosting outing in an unfamiliar right back role the following week.

19. Glenn Main (defender): Now among the most experienced players at the club, he can play in the centre of the defence or at right back, as well as in the middle of the park. Appointed vice-captain in the summer for his home town club where he has played in North of Scotland Cup and Highland League Cup winning teams.

Fraserburgh FC Official Matchday Programme

Nairn county player profiles

21. Callum Ednie (defender): A young left back who was handed a debut on the opening day of the 2016/17 Scottish Highland League season. Looked assured as the game wore on despite the big occasion and possess all of the physical attributes to become a regular part of the defence over the next few seasons.

23. William Barron (midfielder): Back at Nairn County after six years away, this veteran is the most experienced member of the squad and already a fans’ favourite from his first spell at the club, where he won the North of Scotland Cup in 2005 and 2008 – the second as captain. He brings championship-winning experience from Forres Mechanics’ 2012 success which can only be beneficial to the young players around about him.

Ronald Sharp (manager): Back in the Station Park hot seat after an absence of 12 years. He played for the club in the early to mid 1980s before moving to Clachnacuddin for a short spell. He came back to Station Park via Nairn St Ninian before again returning to Saints as he looked to wind down his playing career. The call came in 1999 to come back to Nairn County for a third spell, this time as player / manager and he took the club to four semi finals and fifth place in the table during his five-year reign. Nine years as boss of St Ninian with two Elginshire Cup wins and two promotions followed after which he took on the role of Nairn County under-20s coach in 2015 having been voted in to the Nairn County Team of the Century by the fans the previous year. The Station Park manager’s vacancy this summer and the chance to rebuild the squad and restructure the footballing side of the club in his own image was too big a pull to reject and he was appointed as manager of Nairn County for the second time on July 11th 2016.

(continued from page 8) In fact, one player who left has agreed to write off a signing-on fee due to him while another could have walked away for free under the terms of his contract but insisted that we received a transfer fee for his services. The Nairn supporters have some great icons of the past, who are rightly revered among the fans, such as Johnston, Allan, Cochrane and Brown. I hope that the names listed above are mentioned in the same breath in the future for the sacrifices they have made this summer which has essentially saved the club and allowed us to move forward and hopefully prosper. The manager now knows which players he has left and is working extremely hard to add some experience and additional quality to the ranks. All things going well, we hope to have some news on that front before Saturday’s opening fixture with Brora Rangers. Keep an eye on the club’s official website, Facebook page and Twitter feed @Nairn County for confirmation of any completed deals.

It is going to take time and it is going to take patience on everyone’s part for us to build the squad up again given the upheaval experienced this summer. While supporting the will of the manager as much as I possibly can, one thing I will steadfastly refuse to do is allow the wage bill to spiral out of control again so that the very existence of Nairn County is ever in doubt. I am also delighted to report that season ticket sales have more than doubled. This is purely public sales and does not include the Community Season Tickets initiative that we launched earlier this month. The supporters have been fantastic in rallying round and the numbers who turned out for our pre-season friendlies against Inverness CT and Nairn St Ninian were great. We need you to stick with us throughout the season and turn up in your numbers at Station Park.

We are now entering the start of a new season and that means the return of significant running costs which lie dormant during the summer months. Things like referees’ fees, transport to away games, floodlighting and winter training facilities all have to be paid for and do not come cheap with combined costs running well into the tens of thousands every year. We are yet to attract a main sponsor to help cover these costs and my words to anyone waiting in the wings for the situation at the club to settle down would be to come forward now. We have a forward- thinking manager and a tireless, innovative Management Committee in place with both having Nairn County FC at heart, so the club is ready to progress and move forward into a new era.

If anyone is interested in assisting us with the above stated costs or becoming involved as a sponsor, please contact me by emailing [email protected]. Any supporters who are looking to purchase season tickets prior to the big kick-off on Saturday can do so from the Town Barber with adults costing £115 and concessions priced at £70. Supporters can also contribute a minimum of £10 per month by Standing Order to the Fans Fund. All monies raised from this venture go directly to the running costs of the club. To join, simply setup a Standing Order with your bank for a minimum payment of £10 per month to be made to Nairn County Sportsman’s Dinner, Royal Bank of Scotland, High Street, Nairn, account number 00299983, sort code 83-25-23. Of course, the most important thing any fan can do is turn up on a matchday to cheer on the team so on that note, I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at Station Park on Saturday to support us against Brora Rangers.

Enjoy the season and thank you for your wonderful support.

MatchHighland Report Vs league strathspey round thistleup th Pre Season Friendly Match, Saturday 30 July 2016, Fraserburgh v Strathspey Thistle, Bellslea Park, Fraserburgh

Fraserburgh took the spoils against Strathspey and got off to the best possible start in this season’s Highland League.

The win gives the Broch a great confidence boost going into the campaign. However, for Strathspey, it’s back to the drawing board for manager Brian Grant.

It was a dream comeback for youngster Marc Lawrence, who re-joined the Broch on-loan from Peterhead this week and it only took 65 seconds for him to score on his return. Dean Cowie’s drilled free-kick was spilled by Thistle goalkeeper Michael MacCallum and Lawrence fired home from close range.

The home side had a great opportunity minutes after the opening goal when Aidan Combe got on the end of a Marc Dickson through-ball, however he could only poke his effort into MacCallum’s hands.

Mid -way through the half Lawrence had a chance to double his and Fraserburgh’s tally after he got on the end of a lovely flick by Greg Buchan, but his shot was saved excellently by the Strathspey goalkeeper.

The closest the visitors came to scoring was a 30-yard effort from James McShane that went narrowly wide of Paul Leask’s goal.

L awrence and Combe then combined to dispossess Strathspey defender and Paul Campbell then found himself clear on goal but he shot wide of the far post.

New signing Buchan had to go off for the Broch, but the experienced William West took his place and made an immediate impact. Two minutes after coming on, the substitute found the net when he got on the end of a Ryan

Cowie free-kick and sent a glancing header goal-bound, which beat MacCallum.

The home side seemed to take their foot off the gas a little in the second half, which manager Mark Cowie was unhappy about. Despite not creating as many opportunities as they did in the first half the Broch still went close to adding to their tally with the combination of a Ryan Cowie delivery and a West header.

The same player then found Russell McBride but he sent a header over the bar. Strathspey threatened from a free kick by Adam McLeod but West was back to clear the danger.

Another Ryan Cowie delivery from a corner was met on the full by Bryan Hay but he failed to hit the target. The Broch full back was proving a handful for the visitors with his dead ball prowess setting up West again who saw his header cleared off the line.

Grant Noble then set up a chance for Marc Dickson but the Broch player saw his effort from the edge of the penalty area fly wide.

With minutes left in the match substitute Grant Noble made it 3-0 to Fraserburgh with a dipping effort from the edge of the box going over MacCallum.

Match report vs fort william Press & Journal Scottish Highland Football League, Saturday 6th August 2016, Fort William v Fraserburgh, , Fort William

The Broch eventually took all three points from the long journey to Fort William thanks to Grant Noble’s first hat- trick for the club. It was a comfortable victory in the end but the home side made the visitors work hard for the points especially in the first half.

Iain Maclellan had the first chance for the home side but saw his shot saved by Paul Leask in the first minute.

There was a bit of a stramash in the Fort penalty area on six minutes after a Ryan Cowie corner wasn’t properly cleared but the danger was avoided.

On 14 minutes a long ball out of defence by Russell McBride found Grant Noble but keeper Douglas MacLennan blocked his effort.

The home side survived another scare on 19 minutes when Ryan Cowie’s free kick from the left was headed over his own bar by David Moffat.

At the other end Bryan Hay almost gifted Fort a goal when he overhit his backpass but it went wide of the post for a corner.

Michael Rae was next to try his luck for the Broch on 24 minutes but he saw his stinging shot save b y Maclennan.

A Ryan Cowie corner to the back post on 33 minutes looked to have given Stuart Taylor a great chance for the opener but he couldn’t direct his header on target.

Just before the break the Broch defence failed to clear the ball properly and Adam Porritt saw his 25 yarder well saved by Leask.

The Broch came out looking for a goal at the start of the second half and Taylor saw his shot well saved.

The breakthrough came on 52 minutes when Mark Lawrence received Dean Cowie’s pass on the wing and his cross was swept home by Grant Noble.

Four minutes later it was 2-0 from another well worked move. Noble played the ball out to Ryan Cowie who found Marc Dickson with a through ball and he found Noble who finished with a low drive.

On 70 minutes Michael Rae played the ball out to Dickson who crossed into the box but Lawrence saw his shot blocked.

The third goal came on 78 minutes after good passing between Graham Johnston, Liam Norris and Michael Rae who found Grant Noble who chipped his shot past the keeper into the far corner of the net.

Paul Leask almost joined the fun when a long kick out bounced wickedly and hit the Fort William bar. Fort had a couple of late efforts from Porritt and Daniel Highet but the Broch defence held out for the clean sheet.

MatchSSEE AAreportsSSOONN BBYY S S–EE forAASSOOmartineNN 11997755//77 United66 th Evening Express Aberdeenshire Cup Semi Final, Wednesday 10 August 2016, Formartine United v Fraserburgh, North Lodge Park, Pitmedden

Fraserburgh’s cup heroics continued as they started their Aberdeenshire Cup defence by beating Formartine on penalties after a 3-3 draw.

The home side took the lead twice in the regulation 90 minutes, but Mark Cowie’s men fought hard and forced the game to extra-time. Dean Cowie then scored for the Broch, however it was cancelled out by Paul Lawson’s free- kick. Ryan Cowie converted the decisive penalty as the visitors won the shootout 5-4.

United started the game strongly and Connor Gethins latched onto Scott Barbour’s through-ball, however he could only fire wide. That chance didn’t seem to get to the striker though, as he opened the scoring only seven minutes in. Barbour dispossessed Marc Dickson and sent a floating cross into the back post, where Gethins was positioned to divert his header into the net.

Fraserburgh came into the game a lot more as it continued. A 1-2 between Grant Noble and Graham Johnston saw the former rifle in a shot from 16 yards which Reid did well to tip over the bar.

On the brink of half-time the visitors levelled it up when captain Russell McBride headed home at the back post from a Graham Johnston corner.

The hosts were the better team in the early stages of the second period. Within minutes of kick-off, United put their noses in front again, as Graeme Rodger volleyed home a Neil McVitie cross into the bottom left corner.

Fraserburgh showed their fighting mentality as the Formartine goal only seemed to make them step up their game. Mid -way through the second half Paul Campbell unleashed a thunderous shot into the top right corner of the net to again put the visitors on level terms.

Both teams tried to win it before the end with Noble going close for the Broch and Berton flashing a shot wide at the other end.

The Broch struck first in extra-time when Dean Cowie got on the end of a knock-back from Campbell to hit a low drive past defenders, but more importantly into the back of the net.

That certainly didn’t faze the home side because just four minutes later, Lawson’s deflected free-kick beat Broch keeper Paul Leask, which was enough to force extra-time.

The first six penalties were converted, including a spot-kick from Fraserburgh goalie Leask. Lawson stepped up to take Formartine’s fourth, but it was a poor penalty which Leask saved easily. All the following takers scored which left Ryan Cowie the chance to win the tie. He rifled his penalty into the bottom right corner giving United keeper Andy Reid had no chance.

This win for Fraserburgh is the start of their defence of the trophy and they will visit Buckie Thistle in the next round. The Broch also won last season's Aberdeenshire Shield.
