Today we welcome the players, management, officials and supporters of Strathspey Thistle to Bellslea Park for our opening P&J Highland League fixture of the new season.

Personally, I say thank heavens Pre Season is finished and we can now get back to a settled schedule of games and normality off field. People think that because it is pre- season we all have a break but it couldn’t be further from

the truth. I am sure secretaries the league over will agree that this is the busiest time of the year, especially if you have a Youth system!! The forms required for that are ridiculous and extremely time consuming. You have had a busy pre season with a lot of games in a short space of time. How have you felt preparations have gone overall?

Pre-season is one of the most frustrating times for being a manager. You can have the best made plans all you want but there are so many factors that will affect these. We expect a lot from these players which I know can be hard. The training normally commences in mid

June and then pre-season friendlies come on the scene in July, however players quite rightly take holidays and unfortunately due to work commitments, and school holidays etc, these holidays affect our pre season schedule. I do understand that it is sometimes hard for players to attend every session and game, but in order to be fully prepared for the season ahead, this is Strathspey always seem to give the Broch problems something that they must try and do. We had a great especially at Bellslea with some tough games over the schedule written down and had some very good ideas years. How difficult will Saturday's game be? about how we were going to shape up for this coming I have always said that there are no easy games in this year, but these had to be thrown out the window when as much as 10 first team players were unavailable at the league anymore. Every team is now full of fit players same time. It is just frustrating but part and partial of which makes it more difficult. Yes there are teams the game unfortunately. I did manage to get a good look which do not have as many talented players than others at the younger lads though and again the future looks but as long as you are fit and well organised then you bright for FFC with quite a few players looking like they have a chance in every game so I have no doubts that might be ready to step up this year. Also the guys who there will be more than a few surprising results this have had a good pre season are raring to go so hopefully season. One of the most pleasing results in the league we go on and have a good start to the 2016/17 for me last season was our victory up at Strathspey. I know how difficult it can be against them so was campaign. delighted to come away with a 2-1 win. We are difficult will it be to replicate that and what would be playing at home in the first game of the season so I am a successful campaign in your eyes? hoping that it wont take much from me to get the guys up for the game but I will be stressing that we must be

It will be very hard. It is hard enough to win a trophy, at our best if we are to get anything from this game as Strathspey will not be coming here to make up the but even harder to retain it as all the other teams in the competition will be looking to win against us so they can numbers. They will be looking to win. claim that they knocked the holders out. We now know we will be away to Formartine in the first round of the All the Best, Aberdeenshire League Cup so in my eyes we have the toughest draw we could have got, but to win trophies Mark. then you have to beat the best teams and Formartine are certainly one of those. I have not set targets for the Late News guys. I have simply told them to take one game at a time and see where we end up. One thing I will be Marc Lawrence back at Bellslea on loan looking to do is improve our home form. Bellslea should be a fortress and no team should look forward to coming Peterhead FC and the Broch have agreed a loan deal for here so I am hoping that we can turn things around from Marc Lawrence. The deal will last initially until 30th last year and win the majority of our home matches. August and everyone at the club is delighted to see Marc Saying that another trophy back at Bellslea would be back with us even it is for a short period. Marc made 25 good so we will be doing our best to make this appearances last season scoring seven goals in the happen. Every team in the league has improved with process the most memorable being the equalising goal some more than others so it will be another competitive against Falkirk in the Scottish Cup. league again and hopefully one or two teams will go on and challenge the top 3 for the league this season.

Strathspey thistle history Kicking off the appeal was a challenge match against the newly formed Scottish league side, Caledonian Thistle, who eventually won an entertaining match 4-0. Unfortunately however, that season the club suffered a few heavy defeats, most notable the record 14-2 loss away to Lewis United. It was also the first season the club failed to reach a cup final.

Prior to the start of season 1996/97, the club was able to sign two players for the first time from Highland league clubs, namely former Clachnacuddin goalkeeper, Derek Arris, and Grantown man Colin Maclean returning home from Rothes. Their experience helped raise the standard of the club, which then almost won its first ever trophy in the Connon Cup Final, again at Forres Mechanics' Mosset Park. But in a match dominated for long spells by Strathspey Thistle, opponents Burghead Thistle won 1-0 with a late goal. Ironically before the end of the season, the man who scored that winning goal, James McNeil, and his Burghead team mate Joe Conway had both joined Strathspey Thistle. A clear sign that other Junior players saw what was happening at club and were keen to be involved. Also during this season, the club formed an Under 16s Boys Club run by former players Brian Grant and Bobby Beckwith, playing in the Moray Firth Youth League. They recorded one very famous victory at home over Inverness

Caledonian Thistle's Youth team, coming from 3-1 down with under 10 minutes to play to win 4-3. The Boys club also saw fresh young players progress into the Junior side, with the likes of Jamie Rodgers, Ben McLeod, and Gareth Smith coming through the ranks.

In many different ways, season 1997/98 was a landmark one for Strathspey Thistle. Firstly the club was able to acquire a shirt sponsor in local firm Mortimers, and made further named transfers in signing Billy Lyons, Robbie MacDougall, Ewan Davidson plus two returning former players in Deane Lawson and Iain Brooks. The club also reached two cup finals; the Stewart Memorial Trophy against Lossiemouth United in November 1997, played at Lossiemouth's Grant Street Park which the local side narrowly edged 1-0; then on an afternoon of very heavy rain in

June 1998 at Seafield Park in Grantown on Spey in the final of the Clive Williamson Trophy (named after the hospitality sponsor of the club and manager of the Ben Mhor Hotel) a Robbie MacDougal brace was enough to defeat Nairn St Ninian 2-1 in extra time to win the club's first ever trophy!

1998/99 saw further historic events for Strathspey Thistle. The Boys Club, which by now had advanced into an Under 18 side to keep the same squad together, WON the Highland Youth league in a dramatic play-off at Grant Street Park in Lossiemouth, defeating Peterhead 2-1. While the Junior club made a small piece of football history by becoming the first ever Scottish Junior club to play an official fixture on mainland Europe, when they headed to France to take on a team from Grantown on Spey's twin town of Notre Dame de Monts, winning a challenge trophy

3-1. The club won another trophy closer to home, lifting the Robbie Nicol Memory Trophy at Pine Field, New Elgin, defeating Portgordon United in the final by the astonishing scoreline of 5-0!

1999/2000 saw the club get a new shirt sponsor and hospitality deal when S&B Innes took over the running of the local Claymore Bar. But a season which had promised so much turned out to be one of total frustration. The club lost two cup finals in controversial circumstances: The Stewart Memorial Trophy final against Forres Thistle was a very close affair until an alleged off-the-ball incident saw the linesman advise the Referee to send off Strathspey Thistle player Gareth Smith, a decision still disputed by many over 10 years on! Following this sending off (which even Forres Thistle players and committee agreed was wrong) Strathspey crumbled to a despondent 4-0 defeat.

Then in defence of the Robbie Nicol Memory Trophy against reining league champions Deveronside, Strathspey Thistle were 1-0 up with 20 seconds left to play when Deveronside were awarded a clearly offside goal. Strathspey lost the final 3-2 in extra time. In March 2000 Notre Dame de Monts returned to Grantown on Spey for a return fixture, and Strathspey won the match by a record score line of 11-1.

2000/2001 was very much a changeover season for Strathspey Thistle, with some old players playing fewer matches and new players appearing more often. One record the club would not like to be reminded of is that this was the very first season Strathspey Thistle failed to win a cup tie! A return trip to France in March 2001 was made possible due to big gaps in the fixture list, and the club maintained its unbeaten record on French soil, this time winning against a Note / St. Jean de Monts select 8-2.

2001/02 summed up in one word: CHAMPIONS! A remarkable season with the addition of new players, keeper Dave Ness, skipper Mike Noble and centre half supreme, big Mark Taylor - an inspiration in midfield all though out the season. Whilst up front the lethal duo of Tolga Dagtas and Kenny Hendry scored over 80 goals between them! All this came together on the 11th May 2002 when a 3-1 victory away to Islavale won the club's first ever Scotscoup First Division (West) league title! Then just 15 days later at Logie Park in Forres, Strathspey Thistle again defeated Islavale, this time by 2-1 (after extra time) to win the Gordon Williamson Trophy.

Strathspey thistle history

2002/03 saw Strathspey Thistle try to build on the success of the previous season with two very prominent signings. The first, and possibly the most famous of all footballers from Grantown on Spey, goalkeeping legend Jim Calder finally joined the club. He was joined by Alan Grant, a player who was always a major threat playing against the club, be it for Deveronside or Isalvale. However the club was unable to repeat its league success, losing in vital matches against Forres Thistle who eventually won the League title. However, Strathspey Thistle did have reason to celebrate when after defeating Banks O'Dee in a penalty shot-out, to win the Inter Regional Trophy, The Grill Bar League Cup. This was the first time in the trophy's 98 season it had been played for and won by a team from outside Aberdeenshire. The same season we progressed to the 4th round of the Scottish Junior Cup for the one and only time.

2003/04 saw the team break up with Mike Noble, Iain Lambie and Mark Taylor either retiring or moving on, and although we finished second in the league again it was clear that some of the sparkle had gone.

2004/05 saw further losses to the squad with Hendry, Calder and Russell moving on. Manager McLeod was now forced to dip into the youth ranks, giving a number of young players from around the valley and opportunity to show their talents. Unfortunately a lack of experience in the side meant only a top half finish in the league.

2005/06 saw a restructuring in the league setup. Thistle opted not to join the first division, however when other local teams opted to join the next tier, Thistle were left out on a limb. Fortunately the team was able to gain promotion in its first season.

2006/07 began disastrously, with only one win in the first five games. And even then we had those points deducted for fielding an ineligible player. Things picked up as the season progressed however, and a mid table finish was just deserts for such a young team. There was one very dark moment during the season with the loss of inspirational skipper Alistair Michell to cancer, but thankfully he made a full recovery.

2007/08 saw the team progress into a formidable unit, losing only 4 games during their league campaign, and with only one defeat on the road. However, too many draws resulted in a fourth place finish and narrowly missing out on promotion.

2008/09 began with high hopes in what was to be the Jags' junior swansong. Thistle had a number of young players on loan from Nairn County and the season started brightly. Inconsistencies began to creep in to the side however, and at the turn of the year Thistle sat in mid table. Acceptance into the Highland League seemed to spur the players on and we finished third in the last season as a Junior outfit.

2009/10 and Strathspey Thistle have joined the ranks of the Highland League, ready to write new chapters!

The clubs have met on fourteen occasions since Strathspey Thistle were elected to the Scottish Highland Football League in 2009. The first meeting ended in a 4-2 victory at Bellslea Park for the Broch but Strathspey gained revenge with a 2-0 win at Seafield Park in the reverse fixture. The following season saw the Jags pick up a point in a 2-2 draw at Bellslea but since then the Broch have racked up 11 wins on the trot but many of these games have been close affairs with little between the sides and that is sure to be the case again today when both clubs get their league campaigns up and running.

Four minutes later a cross into the Broch box was cleared to Ryan Cameron who saw his drive from the edge of the box deflected wide.

A minute later Dean Cowie picked the ball up in midfield and fed Combe who drove into the box and crossed for Andrew Hanner to slide the ball home to give the Broch a 2-0 advantage.

Fra serburgh started the match with the youth players taking on their more experienced North Junior counterparts from Maud and fell behind in the 10th minute. Maud scored a second after 20 minutes and the best the Broch could muster was an effort by Jordan Bremner which was saved.

After the break a completely different team took the field for the Broch mostly established first teamers. Bailey Simpson immediately set up Grant Noble but he saw his effort well saved. The corner was taken short to Aidan Combe and he curled an effort just wide. On 51 minutes another deep cross by Simpson to the back post was turned home by Combe to make the score 2-1. Paul Campbell then saw a shot saved by the Maud keeper before the home side extended their lead with a header from 10 yards out.

On 58 minutes Simpson burst through the Maud defence but the home keeper did well to save at his feet. Another one on one with the keeper resulted in Campbell’s effort being saved before Simpson crashed the rebound over the bar. With 11 minutes remaining Combe picked the ball up on the left, cut inside and curled a low shot home to pull a goal back for the Broch.

th Pre Season Friendly v Fraserburgh United, Wednesday 20 July 2016, College Park, Fraserburgh

Just as they did in the Maud match a youthful XI took the field for the first half against local junior side Fraserburgh United. The home side took the lead in the 7th minute from a header and that lead was extended 5 minutes later when another header from a corner was bulleted home. The Broch pulled a goal back on 16 minutes when Grant Noble headed home a Calum Mitchell cross from six yards out. The junior side restored their two goal lead on 31 minutes when they scored from another header but just on the stroke of half time the Broch made it 3-2 when Liam Norris’ free kick was met by Cameron Buchan who rammed the ball into the net from close range.

All change again at half time and the Broch had an early chance to level the score but Paul Campbell saw hit kick hit the crossbar. On 70 minutes a mistake in the Broch defence lead to the home side making it 4-2 but 8 minutes later the visitors reduced the leeway through marc Dickson after good link up play between Campbell and Andrew Hanner. Dean Cowie almost snatched a draw for the Broch but his shot from 20 yards whistled past the post.

Pre Season Friendly v Broughty Athletic, Saturday 23rd July 2016, Whitton Park, Broughty Ferry

The Broch travelled to Broughty ferry to face East region juniors Broughty Athletic in a match to commemorate the Lyall Murdoch memorial trophy. The Broch took the lead on 10 minutes when Paul Campbell pounced on a short passback to slot home from just inside the penalty area. Just before the break Dean Cowie saw his shot from the edge of the box whistle just wide of the post. The home side nearly levelled on 58 minutes but Flinn and McBride combined to clear the danger and 8 minutes from time Grant Noble turned his marker and fired a shot which the home keeper turned round the post.

th Pre Season Friendly v Longside, Monday 25 July 2016, Davidson Park, Longside

The home side took an early lead when Stuart Taylor was dispossessed and Ramsay fired home from the edge of the box. On 15 minutes they doubled their lead when a shot from the edge of the box skipped off the wet surface and beat Paul Leask’s despairing dive. With four minutes left before the break Graham Johnston slipped a free kick into Grant Noble who laid it off the Greg Buchan to fire home from 12 yards.

The Broch looked to level things after the break and Nathan Stuart’s effort clipped the top of the crossbar on 67 minutes. In the last 10 minutes the visitor scored three times to ease to victory with Bailey Simpson setting up Aidan Combe for the equaliser before Michael Rae fired home from 12 yards and Johnston wrapped things up late on.
