MMAANNAAGGEERR’’SS NNOOTTEESS

Since your last programme notes it has been an excellent couple of weeks for the club. First up was winning the

Aberdeenshire Cup Final against Formartine. After a fairly even first half, I thought we thoroughly deserved to win the game on the back of a superb second half performance. What were your thoughts?

It was great to get the win and take the Aberdeenshire Cup back to Bellslea. I thought we started the game better than Formartine and thoroughly deserved to get the early goal. In truth we should have scored at least a couple more with the We have had our fair share of injuries of late and with the chances we created. Formartine are a very good side so it was other title challengers strengthening, we felt that we couldn’t inevitable that they would have a spell and they dominated be left behind. Michael Rae has been unbelievable for me and the back end of the first half and managed to get an equaliser the team. He came back to help us out in our time of need which was deserved. At half time I reminded the team that we and is actually playing with quite a bad injury, but he is were very much in this game and in fact had another gear or playing through it as that is the type of lad he is. We knew two to go up. Again we came out the traps early and managed that he couldn’t play 90 minutes for every game and that left to get a second goal at the start of the second half. We Paul Young as our only recognised central . We have created numerous chances to make our lead comfortable but a very good relationship with Jim McInally at and didn’t quite manage to get more goals. In the end I think we he highlighted Ross to us and said he would be available for managed the game excellent and gave Formartine very little loan. We took the gamble and I think it started to pay off opportunities. The only chance I can recall was from Gethins early as he was very good in the final and looks to be a great which Paul did excellent to turn over the bar. It was what we addition. Grant Campbell ticks all the boxes of what is deserved in the end and I don’t think anyone would argue that required to be a Broch player. More importantly, he knows we were the better side on the night. I always tend to what it takes to win and is a born winner. His experience of dedicate these sort of wins to the players and my back room winning countless trophies with Cove will hopefully help us team as they put all the hard work in to try and win the game going forward. Another excellent addition. Greg has really and on this instance the plan worked. That said it was good to bailed us out. We knew Paul would be unavailable for the get the win for the fans who have been great to us of late so Brora game but then Joe Barbour was called away with work it was good to get another trophy on board for them. and Eddie broke his finger, we really were in trouble. I knew Greg previously and knew he was unattached yet still training You followed that up with another fantastic display at Brora so I asked him to help us out. He thankfully agreed although last week. This showed a different side to the guys where he was probably unaware that it would mean he played they dug in and were disciplined restricting the home side against Brora. Irrespective of who he was against, he was to few chances and taking one that came our way. How did excellent on the day and not many people in recent times can you see the match? say that they have kept a clean sheet up at Dudgeon Park. All three have been brilliant so far. Over the last few seasons we have managed to improve on our forward play which has seen us score more goals than anyone You now have two home games against Keith and Inverurie in the last two seasons. We also know that to be successful Loco Works coming up which will be tough as always, how this had to be paired with conceding less. We have worked important is it to keep the momentum going to put pressure hard in trying to find ways of defending better as a team and I on the other sides around you? think that is starting to show. We have limited two of the best attacking teams to very few chances in these two games. Every single game this season will be tough. You can tell that Brora didn’t really have many clear cut chances although they by some of the results already this season. We are just trying did have a lot of the ball without really threatening us. We to take it one game at a time and try and look after ourselves. had a couple of chances which really we should have It has been a great week or two but this will count for converted. The goal we did get was a great break away move. nothing if we don’t kick on from here. We want to make Lewis played a great ball through for Fig who then in turn Bellslea a really tough place to come and get anything and if timed his pass to Paul Young brilliantly. Paul is not known for we can do that then we know we have a chance. Keith will be his goal scoring but I feel he could be scoring a lot more than tough as they have assembled a good young team under Dean he does because he has a great technique and great energy to and in Cammy Keith they have someone who will always be get from box to box. After that Brora camped in our half a bit dangerous. I think Keith have a good record against us at but we stood strong and didn’t give them much room to Bellslea so that tells you that we need to make sure that we create anything and it turned out to be a great win. are at our very beat if we are going to keep the three points.

Whilst not wanting to highlight any individuals over the last All the Best, Mark couple of weeks you took a brave decision to start Grant Campbell and Ross Willox in the final and Greg Sim was an able replacement for Paul Leask at Brora last week. How pleased are you with how they have fitted in to the team?

Afternoon folks, welcome back to the Bellslea to see the Aberdeenshire Cup winners!!

Been a good few weeks for us with winning the cup and then going up to Brora and getting the 3 points. Firstly with the cup final it was no more than we deserved, we were comfortable throughout the game and should have scored a few more in the 2nd half, it shows now that when we believe we can beat these teams then it happens, Formartine had no answer to us and ended up back to long balls again which we handled with ease.

Huge congrats to our 2 new boys Ross and Grant who came in and were exceptional, good business from Mark & Bax to get these lads in. I must also thank Greg Sim who has agreed to help us out in goal. We then travelled to Brora for potentially our hardest game of the season, they had a lot of possession but again couldn’t break us down which resulted in them going for the long ball, we had 2 glorious chances in the first half which we should have scored from, then in the 2nd half we scored a brilliant goal through Figs run and PYs finish....he was so high up the park he needed a day off work to recover from it!

We now have a spate of home games starting today with Keith, they have had a mixed start to the season but have probably had the better of us over the past few seasons, we need to turn up with our A game today and give our usual 110% to get the 3 points.

Then we face a very tough game with Locos, we have played them at home already in the Aberdeenshire Cup in what was a close game, we did get the better of them but we were under the cosh for a good part of the game and know that if we don’t play to our strengths then we’ll struggle to get anything out of the games.

Enjoy both games folks

Cheers, Boom

MATCHTODAY’S REPORT TEAMLINES – FORMARTINE – KEITH F.C.UNITED

Evening Express Aberdeenshire Cup Final, Fraserburgh v Formartine United, Friday 4th October 2019

A William West brace was enough to ensure the Broch were triumphant against Formartine United in this season's

Evening Express Aberdeenshire Cup Final at Balmoral Stadium, Cove. The Black and Whites dominated for large periods but were pegged back after West's 10th minute opener when Garry Wood levelled midway through the half. The Broch's talisman, being used as a front man for the first time this season, then notched his second two minutes after the break and despite a late flurry by Formartine the 'Burgh held on after enduring seven minutes of injury time.

Mark Cowie made a bold decision with his line up giving starts to the two new faces Grant Campbell and Ross Willox in a new look central midfield partnership. There was also a recall for Bryan Hay at the centre of defence replacing Kieran Simpson who dropped to the bench and Owen Cairns filled in at left back for the injured Ryan Cowie. Michael Rae was suspended for the final after his red card at Buckie in the semi-final. There was also a place on the bench for newly signed goalkeeper Greg Sim who replaced Edward Flinn who had broken his hand the week before the Final.

The Broch made a quick start and Wayne Mackintosh of Formartine was yellow carded in the second minute for taking out Scott Barbour as he raced down the left. A minute later United's keeper Errol Watson did well to block a

William West header then a close range drive from Scott Barbour. The Black & Whites early pressure paid off on 10 minutes when they opened the scoring. Lewis Davidson crossed from the right and William West bulleted a powerful header past Errol Watson high into the net much to the pleasure of the large Broch contingent in the crowd.

The Broch pushed for a second as William West continued to trouble the Formartine centre backs but disaster struck midway through the half when Graeme Rodger rounded Paul Leask only to see his low drive cleared off the line by Bryan Hay, the midfielder then retrieved the ball and picked out Garry Wood who headed into the empty net from close range. This seemed to galvanise United who took control and only a timely block by Jamie Beagrie from a surging run and shot by Scott Lisle prevented Formartine from going in ahead at the break.

Half Time: Fraserburgh 1 Formartine United 1

Fraserburgh were out of the traps quickly after the break with Owen Cairns releasing Scott Barbour down the left and the forward carved out an inch perfect cross which was headed home by William West at the back post. The Broch were dominating now and Errol Watson produced a fabulous flying save on 54 minutes to deny Paul Campbell's ferocious drive from the edge of the box. Three minutes later Bryan Hay came close which a header at the back post which just drifted wide of the upright as the Black & Whites upped the pressure. On the hour the Formartine goal had an almighty escape when William West managed to screw his effort over the crossbar from six yards out.

Two minutes after that the Formartine keeper denied the Broch auxiliary striker his hat-trick when he smothered another shot on target. Formartine changed things up by intro ducing Andrew Greig, Gary McGowan and Conor Gethins in an effort to find an equaliser but the Broch defence stood firm with Jamie Beagrie and Bryan Hay snuffing out any danger. In the last minute Conor Gethins saw a hooked shot fly over the crossbar with the aid of a deflection from a Broch defender and Daniel Park was lucky to escape with only a yellow card deep into stoppage time after an atrocious challenge on Greg but after seven nerve jangling minutes of injury time referee Liam Duncan blew the final whistle and cue wild celebrations from the Broch players, management and supporters.

NORTHERNTODAY’S TEAMLINESSLANT BY PETER– KEITH MYERS F.C.

Keith star knocked back ’s approaches

It’s rare now for a promising young player in the Highland League to attract the attention of the Old Firm, let alone other Scottish League sides, but this is what happened to Keith’s Hamish French in the early 1980s.

Methlick man Hamish had signed for Formartine United, then in the Junior ranks, in March, 1981 and quickly impressed in the club’s under-18 side. United coach Dougie Ross promoted him to the first team for the start of the new season as he gave priority to his team gaining promotion from Rosslyn League Division II. Hamish was described as a “left-sided midfield man or striker” and soon began banging in the goals. He contributed a goal as Formartine went nap against Aberdeen Lads’ Club in October with the others coming from Gary McInnes, Billy Gibb, Billy Lownie and Colin Finnie. Hamish was again on target in December with two goals in a thrilling 4-3 away victory over Hearts with Graham Cuthill and Graeme Taylor contributing the other two.

Hamish’s exploits were beginning to attract the attention of some of the senior clubs, including Keith, and their manager, Bobby Wilson, signed him in July 1982. Wilson had earlier guided Keith to three successive Highland

League titles, and his man-management skills consistently brought out the best in his players. Hamish was no exception and was soon being described as “a revelation” with Keith that season. Bill McAllister, the Press and Journal’s Highland League correspondent, hailed Hamish as a player “who combines skill, drive and goal- grabbing ability from midfield”. Rangers and Celtic joined Motherwell and United in chasing Hamish’s signature, but it was all to no avail. Eighteen-year-old Hamish was quite content playing part-time for Keith as he wanted to complete his apprenticeship as a telephone engineer.

Bobby Wilson told Bill McAllister that Hamish was a “really exciting prospect with a tremendous attitude for a lad straight out of the Junior ranks”. He added that the youngster was quite happy at his work and enjoyed his football, and that he had stressed to him that a full-time career held no attraction for him.

Wilson said Motherwell’s chief scout had offered Hamish a trial at but the teenager had declined as were approaches from Rangers, Celtic and Dundee United. The Keith boss made it plain that the club wasn’t holding Hamish back, adding: “It would be a crime to block the progress of a boy with so much ability, but if the lad’s mind is made up – and it would take a lot to change it – then we’re very happy to keep him at Kynoch Park.”

NORTHERNHIGHLAND SLANT LEAGUE BY ROUND PETER UP MYERS

Hamish played his part in helping Keith win the Highland League championship in 1984-85 as well as lifting the

League Cup in 1983-84 and 1985-86. He continued to shine with the Maroons until Dundee United boss Jim

McLean finally got his man when Hamish signed for the Tannadice club in June 1987 at the age of 23. He made his debut against Rangers at Ibrox on August 8, 1987 but a matter of days later broke his leg in training. Injury dogged Hamish’s career at Tannadice, but he won a runners -up medal with the Tangerines in the 1991 Scottish Cup Final when Motherwell defeated them 4-3 after extra time. Later that year, Dunfermline manager brought Hamish to , and over the next nine seasons was a regular in the Pars side under a succession of managers. His versatility and energy made him popular with the fans.

Hamish’s final appearance for the side was against Morton on May 6, 2000 by which time he had made 300 appearances for them in league and cup games, scoring a total of 64 goals. He then took up a youth coaching post with the Pars, but continued his playing career with Alloa Athletic and Cowdenbeath. It was with the latter club that he suffered a double leg fracture in September 2002 and which ended his playing days. He recovered from his injury and became community manager as well as a member of the coaching staff at East End Park.

His loyalty to the club over almost 20 years led to Hamish being inducted into the Dunfermline Athletic Hall of Fame in 2011, a much-deserved accolade for a club hero. In 2014, Hamish reflected on his time with the Pars as a player for the benefit of the club’s official website: “When you are playing professional football it is always a good time because it is something that you love doing anyway. I suppose the club had been at a low and as always the only way is up. That happened through the nineties when we had a team, maybe not blessed with exceptional players, but we all worked as a team. We enjoyed our football, enjoyed the training and we played an attacking brand of football. It was a great time to be here.”

MATCH REPORHIGHLANDT – LEAGUE TURRIFF ROUND UNITED UP U17S

SHFL Under 17 League - East, Fraserburgh v Turriff United, Monday 7th October 2019

A good move between Logan Watt and Aiden Collin in the 6th minute ended with the Broch winger firing over the crossbar. Five minutes later Liam Morrison tried his luck with a shot from the left side which was well saved by Tim Findlay. On 15 minutes Turriff United had their first effort at goal when Murray Cormack shot just over. A minute later Aiden Collin was denied the opening goal when his run on the left ended with a cracking shot which smashed off the woodwork. Shortly after that Logan Watt saw another shot blocked as the Broch ramped up the pressure.

On 19 minutes Aiden Collin burst through on goal again but the Turriff keeper was out smartly to deny the Broch player.

Midway through the half Zane Laird wriggled free inside the penalty area but Tim Findlay made a good save to deny the home striker and he was thankful to his defence for thwarting the Broch player from the rebound. The opening goal was only delayed by a minute however as Aiden Collin picked up a loose ball from a corner and rifled a shot low into the bottom corner of the net. Logan Watt then produced a great turn and shot which dipped over the Turriff keeper but smacked off the crossbar.

Zane Laird had a great chance on 28 minutes but he was coming up against and inspired Tim Findlay in the Turriff goal who denied the Broch striker once again. Turriff tried to get back into the match and John Milne saw his deflected shot tipped over the bar by Owen Campbell. On 37 minutes Liam Morrison crossed from the left but Aiden Collin headed over.

Half Time: Fraserburgh 1 Turriff United 0

Two minutes into the second half Liam Morrison produced another good run and pulled the ball back to Zane Laird but his effort was cleared off the line and Logan Watt saw his shot from the rebound drift wide. On 48 minutes Aiden Collin picked out Logan Watt with a through ball and the Broch captain made no mistake firing past Tim Findlay to double the home side’s lead. Seven minutes later Logan Watt got his second of the match finishing off another sweeping move by the Black & Whites.

The one way traffic continued and on 68 minutes Zane Laird broke free on goal but his shot was blocked to deny him a goal. A fourth did arrive on 77 minutes when Logan Watt completed his hat-trick by smashing the ball past the Turriff keeper. Two minutes later the Broch went nap when a cross by Ryan Milne to the back post found Kieran Morrison in space to side foot home from close range.

Breedon Scottish Highland Football League, Brora Rangers v Fraserburgh, Saturday 12th October 2019

The Broch made a huge statement in their pursuit of a first Highland League title since 2002 with a steely performance at rivals Brora Rangers thanks to Paul Young’s goal with under 20 minutes to go. The visitors were well marshalled at the back by Jamie Beagrie and man of the match Bryan Hay who was one of two Broch players who had to go to hospital in Golspie after the match to have stitches inserted into a head wound, the other being Ross Willox.

Mark Cowie was forced into three changes from the side that started the Aberdeenshire Cup Final against Formartine United with Michael Rae free from suspension replacing Grant Campbell in midfield who was struggling with an injury. Last week’s goalscoring hero William West missed out due to suspension so there was a recall for Sean Butcher and Greg Sim made his debut in goal replacing Paul Leask who was away due to work commitments. Young Jake Ritchie was listed as substitute goalkeeper for the first time after impressing for the under 17s.

The home side had the first real threat after 8 minutes but Dale Gillespie lifted his shot from outside the penalty area well over the crossbar. Five minutes later a cross by Ally MacDonald was misjudged by the Broch defence and Greg Morrison stole in but saw his goal bound header rebound off the post and cleared to safety. On 14 minutes a corner from the left was met at the back post by Martin MacLean but he headed wide of goal.

The visitor’s first chance came two minutes later when Paul Young’s near post corner fell to Ross Willox but he fired well over from six yards out. Brora won a free kick on 21 minutes on the left which Gavin Morrison curled around the wall but Greg Sim was well placed to make a good save. On 32 minutes a cross from the right was met by Dale Gillespie inside the penalty area but he headed over from a good position.

Three minutes later a good move on the right by Paul Young and Ross Willox released Lewis Davidson and he drove into the Brora penalty area before pulling the ball back to Sean Butcher but the Broch’s top scorer saw his tame effort easily saved by Joe Malin. Three minutes before the break Brora broke with pace and Dale Gillespie fed James Wallace outside the Broch penalty area, his netbound shot was touched by the finger tips of Greg Sim and Bryan Hay was on hand to clear the ball as it trickled towards the goal.

Half Time: Brora Rangers 0 Fraserburgh 0

The visitors came out with more attacking threat at the start of the second half and three minutes in Sean Butcher drove towards the Brora penalty area before passing to Ross Willox who fired in a drive which was blocked by the home defence.

On 53 minutes Dale Gillespie picked out Ally MacDonald with a cross but his half volley was straight at Greg Sim who made a crucial save. Two minutes later another chance fell to Martin MacLean from a pull back but his effort was straight at Greg Sim once again.

The home side continued to push forward and another corner in the 58th minute was retrieved by Paul Brindle at the back post and his pull back was met by Martin MacLean but he lifted his shot well over the crossbar.

On 73 minutes a nasty clash of heads between Bryan Hay and Ross Willox saw the former having to have a gash bandaged whilst the latter couldn’t continue due to an eye injury and was replaced by Grant Campbell. This seemed to upset the home side more and the Broch broke down the right wing with Scott Barbour racing clear before finding Paul Young inside the penalty area and the visitor’s captain for the day composed himself before firing the ball past Joe Malin to open the scoring.

The rest of the game saw the home side resort to high balls into the box which were repelled by the Broch defence with Bryan Hay playing a heroic role and the visitors were unlucky not to add to their lead with only the final pass after a series of counter attacks lacking accuracy.
