CCHHAAIIRRMMAANNSS WWEELLCCOOMMEE

Tonight we welcome the Players, management, officials and supporters of Rothes FC to Bellslea Park for our Press & Journal Highland League match.

In the four games since I last wrote for the programme we have seen some great matches with both excellent and not so excellent passages of play. I am very much a glass half full guy and believe we have made a great start to the season. Our 3-3 draw with Nairn County and to a lesser extent our draw last Saturday with Cove They may look ready to go at kick off on a match day but they could have been Rangers show what is good about the Broch. We have come back from 3-0 down with ten men to get a draw with Nairn and with a bit of luck could have snatched a on nightshift all week, or just back from working away, or been up all night with win at the death. On Saturday we fought back from 2-0 down against League a new born baby. Yes, it can be argued that if they are not fully prepared for a Champion Cove Rangers to get a more than deserved draw. We could and should game of football then they shouldn’t be playing but that is an argument for full have won both games, in my opinion. By the same token we could have lost both but time players. Not ours. The guys we have in the dressing room will give their the reason we didn’t is down to us and he spirit we have in the dressing room. all for the club and the teammates they are playing alongside. I am lucky to know that for a fact. We have the best supporters in the league by a mile and We had a great win at Forres which as you all know is not a great hunting ground on many occasions that has been the difference between getting a draw or a

win, especially here at Bellslea Park. I would have our support over any in the for us. Our record isn’t the best at as most people will tell you but the reality is that our recent record is very good. We haven’t lost there for five league. seasons. Three wins and two draws out of five is not bad. Disappointingly we were knocked out of the Aberdeenshire Cup at Buckie but probably did enough to merit In contrast, our U20’s played Aberdeen last Friday night in the SFA Youth Cup extra time but it wasn’t to be. and put up a great show despite losing 4-1 on the night. What was most pleasing was the reception from the crowd. Everything was positive and any A small minority of supporters have forgotten what the meaning of supporting is it good moves by both sides were roundly applauded. seems. I am a supporter, first and foremost, and like everyone else when things don’t go our way it hurts. I am the first person to acknowledge that if you pay your Today we face a Rothes side who by all accounts are starting to match the off money at the gate then you are entitled to your opinion and have every right to field improvements with some decent on field performances. They had a great express disappointment. The players, management and directors of the club all win over Deveronvale on Saturday and as we all know we can’t seem to buy a agree on that. What I don’t agree with is personal abuse aimed at players or win against them!! Rothes have the same amount of points already this season managem ent. And while I am at it, that goes for match officials also. Personal abuse as they had last season and that is fantastic for all the hard work put in by the is not acceptable. There is no place for it at our level, or any level if truth be told. As people who have saved the club from folding. There are decent people at I say, I don’t have an issue with people moaning, I have made it an art form myself!! Rothes at the moment and they deserve all the good days coming to them. I

have no doubt they will come here tonight with confidence and looking to have Players know and expect the supporters to be annoyed when things don’t go well. They get paid, not a lot it has to be said, and know that people are paying good another good day but hopefully we can put in a performance that will keep the money to come and see them but that shouldn’t extend to personal abuse under any points here at Bellslea. circumstances . These guys are part time and have other things going on in their lives. Come awa the Broch, Finlay

I imagine you have mixed emotions after the Nairn County match. Were you happy that the guys battled back to rescue a point or were you annoyed that after a good start they found themselves 3-0 down at half time?

A bit of both to be honest. To start with, I should have freshened the team up after our win against Formartine on the Wednesday night. The guys who played that night put so much effort into the game, which ultimately went the distance with extra time and penalties. I should have changed things around and started some of the guys who were on the bench, however I went with the same 11 who played a few nights beforehand and it backfired to start with. I think we were sluggish in the first half but I have to give

Nairn some credit. They have had a chaotic close season with their squad being dismantled but yet they performed very well in the first half, scoring I think we showed to everyone that on our day we are as good a side as a couple of unstoppable goals. We regrouped at half time and despite being there is in the league. You are correct in that we did not turn up for spells down to 10 men, we still felt we could get something from the game so we in the first half and were second best but the second halves of each game left two strikers up top. We got it back to 3-3 and then had a couple of were a different story, where we were the team in control. We were good chances to win it. In my opinion no other team in the Highland League unlucky not to go on and win either game, although both Buckie and Cove could have come back from 3-0 down and down to 10 men but it shows you could have been a few further ahead before we decided to wake up. the character of the group we have here. Everyone is willing to fight for Overall I am pleased with our start as we are still unbeaten in the league one another and they work hard for each other which is important for a and have played well in parts of every game, so there are positives to take club like us. even this early in the season. The only disappointing thing is that we are now out of the Aberdeenshire Cup, a trophy which we really wanted to The game at Forres saw a much improved defensive performance retain after holding it for the last two seasons. and was topped of with two cracking strikes from Dean Cowie and

Marc Lawrence. How pleased were you with the afternoon's work? Tonight's match has all the makings of a potential banana skin with Rothes looking an improved side on last season. How will you ensure To go to Forres and come away with a 2-0 win has to be pleasing. We that the players do not take tonight's opponents lightly? planned for the game on the Wednesday and knew exactly what we would be up against. With Russell suspended we had to shuffle things about a bit We will again freshen things up as we now have a squad to do so. It is at the back but young Cammy Buchan came in and was excellent important that we look after the players as with quite a few midweek throughout and more than handled Lee Fraser. The two goals were both games lately and coming up, they will naturally get tired so we will look at excellent strikes. Graham Johnstone did really well to hold the ball up and each game as it comes. I think Rothes’ result on Saturday goes to show lay it off for Dean Cowie who found the top corner from the edge of the that we can not take them lightly as to win against Deveronvale is not easy box. This settled us and then Marc Lawrence produced a powerful strike so we will have to be on our guard. They will come here on a high after past their goalkeeper before he could move which gave us a deserved lead their win and like every game, we will have to be at our best if we are to at half time. As expected, they came more in to the game in the second get a win. It is important that we keep within touching distance of the half but apart from a couple of rash decisions from ourselves, I didn't teams at the top and with the top 4 playing each other tonight, we know think we were overly troubled and in fact saw out the game rather points will have to be dropped somewhere so we will be looking to comfortably. Forres are a very good side and there won’t be a lot of teams capitalise. I have known Fraser Bremner for quite a few years and have a who go up there and win so I have to be pleased with the result and high regard for him as he is intelligent and knows the game. He took over another clean sheet in the process. Rothes when they were at a low point but they are starting to show signs that his hard work is paying off and I have no doubt that he will continue to The recent games against Buckie Thistle and Cove Rangers will have improve the side. given you an opportunity to see how you can compete against two of the strongest teams in the League. It would be fair to say in both All the Best matches they had the best of the first half but the Broch seemed to finish the stronger on each occasion. How did you view both games? Mark

Previous Meetings

The two clubs have met on 151 occasions over the years with the Broch holding the overall advantage with 90 victories to 40 with 21 matches being drawn. In the Highland League the clubs have met on 143 occasions with Fraserburgh winning 84 and Rothes 38. There have been some high scoring affairs with the Broch’s best result an 8-0 win in 2014 at MacKessack Park. Rothes biggest victory against Fraserburgh was 9-1 in 1959 and then 10-2 in 1970 both wins at MacKessack Park

Season 1958/59 saw the Broch and Rothes play off for the Highland League title after both teams finished level on 41 points. The Broch said they’d play Rothes at any ground anytime, but Rothes chairman, Mr. Enfield, said the match should be played at which was a tad unfair as Rothes isn’t that far from Elgin. After much tooing and froing the agreement was that the match would take place at Borough Briggs, Elgin on Thursday 14th May with a 7.15pm kick-off. This was Rothes fifth game in just over two weeks and the Broch’s fourth. The team for the play off were:

Rothes: Slessor, Peddie, McFadyen, Martin, Reddie, A. Munro, Phillibin, Robertson, Grant, Marshall, Scott. Broch: Mowatt, McKenna, Aitken, Simpson, McCall, Auld, Strachan, Meldrum, Andrews, Bradford, Brander. Ref: J. Allan, , Attendance: 4,200 (Rothes played in a blue and white strip).

The game kicked off and in a sensational start Marshall hit the underside of the bar for Rothes in 9 minutes, but the Broch came back and also hit the bar on 30 minutes when Auld powered in a 25 yard shot. Scott and Marshall (Rothes) and Brander (Broch) then got into a heated argument and within seconds all hell broke loose with about nine or tem players getting into the act. The referee would have needed eyes in the back of his head to see all of what went on, but eventually peace was restored. Bradford and Marshall were taken aside by the ref (no red cards in these days) who pointed to the stand for Bradford which seemed an incredible decision! Marshall’s name only went into the book for a caution, so the Broch had to play the last hour with ten men. If you’re a Rothes, fan, 56 minutes is the most important time in your history. For the Broch, it was a death knell. Martin crossed from the right and Grant headed on to Scott who met the pass with his head as well. The ball hit the post and struck keeper Mowatt and rolled into the net for Rothes goal. The Broch kept on fighting but to no avail and the clock tic ked over to ninety minutes when the referee blew for full time and celebrations in the Rothes end as the won the Highland League for the first and only time to date.

MATCHHIGHLAND REPORT LEAGUE vs. NAIRN ROUND COUNTY UP

th Press and Journal Scottish Highland Football League Match, Saturday 13 August 2016, Fraserburgh v Nairn County, Bellslea Park, Fraserburgh

A 3-3 draw at Fraserburgh earned Nairn County their first point of the season but the scoreline does not begin to tell the story of an incredible encounter at Bellslea. Both goalkeepers were called into action to make smart saves early on. Grant Noble wriggled in behind the Nairn back line on four minutes but his powerful drive was parried away by Dylan Maclean. Then, at the other end, Gary Kerr called Paul Leask into action at his near post to deny the County centre forward.

Two goals in three minutes gave County the perfect start. Maclean clutched a cross in from right and bowled the ball out to Paul Macleod on the other side. He helped it on to Wayne Mackintosh, who fed Gary Kerr on the halfway line. The centre forward spun away from Russell McBride and charged towards goal from the right before slotting a low, angled drive under Paul Leask. Then, just three minutes, Ross Naismith won a lost cause just inside the Nairn half. He found Wayne Mackintosh in space in the middle of the park, who then spread the ball wide to Mackay. His low delivery was partially cleared, which allowed Callum Maclean to step on to the ball and whip an exquisite drive over Leask from 22 yards.

The visitors were denied a third by a goal line clearance on 21 minutes. Jordan Macrae’s header on set Kerr racing forward. The centre forward rounded Leask but saw his effort from a tight angle hacked cleared at the near post by a covering defender. From Ross Naismith’s corner which followed, Paul

Macleod helped the ball back into the danger area at the far post and Calum Riddell met it with a header that struck the post. Nairn’s dream start continued on 25 minutes as Wayne Mackintosh added a third. The visitors passed their way out from the back and when Mackintosh had time 25 yards out, the skipper lifted his head and drilled a low effort into the bottom left hand corner of the net to leave Leask rooted to the spot.

County threatened again on 34 minutes. Kerr nicked the ball off Russell McBride on the by-line on the right hand side and his low delivery was stepped over by Ross Naismith at the front post. The ball then found its way to Jordan Macrae at the far post and he spun on it before blasting just past the upright from eight yards. A fantastic one-touch passing move by Nairn County on 36 minutes almost led to the visitors finding a fourth goal. Naismith knocked the ball out to the left from the centre circle for Mackintosh to run on to. He met it with a low, first time cross that Kerr ran on to but the striker scooped the ball over the bar.

Ryan Cowie’s in-swinging free kick almost allowed the hosts a way back in. The attacker whipped the ball in from the right and although it struck Paul Macleod to take the sting out of it, Maclean had to react quickly to drop on the ball and keep it out. The Broch were reduced to 10 men a minute before the break when Jamie Mackay raced towards the penalty area and was scythed down by Russell McBride just as he looked to move into the box. Referee

Graham Beaton showed the Broch skipper a straight red for his troubles.

The hosts came out determined to cut the deficit and would have done so four minutes after restart if not for a stunning block by Dylan Maclean. An in- swinging Ryan Cowie free kick from the right was glanced by the head of Dean Cowie. It looked a certain goal but somehow the young stopper managed to extend a leg and save it with his foot. At the other end, Naismith played a low ball across goal but Jamie Mackay could only fire it over the crossbar from close range as he raced on to it on 53 minutes. Then, a minute later, Jordan Macrae wriggled into the box from the left but his drive was held by Leask at his near post. Fraserburgh pulled one back on the hour-mark through an own goal.

Ryan Cowie whipped in an inviting delivery from the left that Calum Riddell was stretching to reach and try to knock wide but he could only divert the ball beyond the helpless Dylan Maclean. That gave the Broch a lift and they started to take control but County nearly added a fourth on 74 minutes. Substitute Jason Morganti lifted the ball over the Broch defender from the right for Kerr to run on to but the Nairn centre forward’s low, angled shot from the left was blocked by Leask’s boot. But disaster struck Nairn as the hosts netted two goals in as many minutes to draw level. A free kick into the box on 77 minutes found the head of Bryan Hay and although Maclean blocked the initial effort, Paul Campbell was on hand to knock home for the hosts. Then, two minutes later, the visitors failed to clear a corner from the left and the loose ball dropped for Marc Lawrence to whip home the leveller. Another superb save from Maclean kept County level as he denied Paul Campbell just as the Broch sub looked like he was going to net a dramatic winner.

MATCH REPORT vs. FORRES MECHANICS Press & Journal Scottish Highland Football League, Saturday 20th August 2016, Forres Mechanics v Fraserburgh, Mosset Park, Forres

Forres were first to threaten on 5 minutes when Khutsishvili crossed into the Broch 6 yard area where Cammy Buchan sclaffed his clearance and Jamie

Beagrie finally cleared the danger.

The visitors took the lead on 7 minutes when Dean Cowie chipped the ball into Graham Johnston who held off his marker and laid the ball back to Cowie to thunder home a shot from the edge of the box.

Forres were using their height advantage to good effect and Paul Leask had to look lively to claw away a Lee Fraser header for a corner. The resultant kick saw Graham Fraser drift his header at the back post wide of goal.

On 18 minutes Marc Dickson and Johnston combined to send the latter away down the wing and his cross to the back post saw Aidan Combe arrive and head towards goal which Stuart Knight saved.

The Broch went two up on 31 minutes when they won the ball back in midfield and Marc Lawrence drove forward and then smashed the ball home from 25 yards past a bewildered Knight in the home goal.

Another chance fell to the visitors when along ball forward by Leask saw Jamie Beagrie win a header onto Johnston but the flame haired striker’s effort was saved.

Johnston then had another effort from 20 yards from a free kick which went just wide of the post.

Just before the break Forres had a chance to pull one back when the ball was cleared to Martin Groat at the edge of the box but he fired a shot over the bar.

Forres had the first effort of the second half when Lee Fraser received the ball outside the penalty area but his effort was saved by Leask. A minute later Johnston and Combe combined and the young Broch star curled an effort wide of goal.

On 54 minutes Michael Rae on as a half time substitute set up Bryan Hay but he headed the midfielder’s cross wide. Scott Graham then tried his luck from a free kick which bounced just in front of Leask but he managed to scramble the ball away for a corner.

Forres were dangerous from corners and twice Simon Allan whipped the ball into the penalty area but first Lee Fraser and then Gordon Finlayson could direct their efforts on target. With just over 10 minutes remaining Allan again was the provider this time his cross was cleared by Buchan and it fell to McGovern but he fired a shot over the bar.

Finlayson again tried his luck with a free kick from outside the box which Leask did well to clutch above his head. With just over two minutes to go Stuart Soane had an effort from 18 yards which he volleyed just over the bar.

In the last minute of the match Hay misjudged a long ball and Liam Baxter bore down on goal but Leask was able to save his effort fairly comfortably.

The final action of the match saw the Broch almost score a third when Grant Noble and Combe combined to set up Rae who saw his shot blocked by knight’s legs and when the rebound came back to Combe he headed the ball over the bar.

Aberdeen v Fraserburgh, SFA Youth Cup 1st Round, Friday 26th August, , Aberdeen, Kick off 7.30pm The early play was scrappy as both sides sized each other up and although the Dons had the bulk of the possession they couldn't create an opening. You got the feeling it was only a matter of time before the Dons would score and the goal duly arrived in 18 minutes. Frank Ross played a delightful ball to the back post picking out unmarked Connor McLennan who headed high into the net past a helpless Flinn.

Five minutes later and it was two for the Dons and two for McLennan. The ball broke to the big midfielder about twenty yards out and he wasted no time in firing a great left foot shot low past the keeper. The third goal arrived on 33 minutes when Joe Nuttall flicked a fine Toby Wells cross in at the near post via the underside of the bar. It was one way traffic at this point with the home side playing some lovely one touch football. There was plenty of spirit in the Broch ranks but their opponents were looking very sharp.

Nuttall went from saint to sinner as Fraserburgh grabbed a goal on 40 minutes. Following a corner, the striker pulled Maitland back in the box and was cautioned for the foul. Broch skipper Greg Buchan showed a cool head to send David Craddock the wrong way to put his side on the board. It had been an entertaining first half with some fine football from the Dons who deserved to be further ahead at the interval but Fraserburgh battled hard and will have been delighted to get on the scoresheet. The fourth goal for the Dons finally arrived on 86 minutes and what a beauty it was. Joe Nuttall was fouled 25 yards out and Bruce Anderson stepped up to curl a wonderful shot beyond the despairing dive of Flinn into the bottom corner of the net.

MATCHSSEEAASS OOREPORTNN BBYY SSE Evs.AASS OOBUCKIENN 11997766 /THISTLE/7777 th Evening Express Aberdeenshire Cup Semi Final, Wednesday 24 August 2016, Buckie Thistle v Fraserburgh, Victoria Park, Buckie

Fraserburgh crashed out of the Evening Express Aberdeenshire Cup at the semi final stage after a pulsating match against Buckie Thistle at Victoria Park. The home side had the better of the first half and led through Shaun Wood’s header but the Broch came to level with a header from Jamie Beagrie before the break. The second half saw the visitors in the ascendancy but they couldn’t capitalize and Chris Angus curled home a shot from the edge of the box to send the Jags into the final to be played next month.

The first chance fell to the Broch when Aidan Combe’s cross found Graham Johnston who met the ball on the volley but Greg Sim did well to save. Chris

Angus then had an effort at the other end which Paul Leask was equal to saving.

In the 15th minute John McLeod got clear of the Broch defence but again the home side were thwarted by Leask. Seven minutes later Buckie broke again and after the initial threat was repelled the ball fell to Sam Urquhart at the edge of the box but his shot was blocked by Bryan Hay for a corner.

th On the 24 minute Russell McBride misjudged a ball over the top and Angus bore down on goal cut inside the defender but again Leask blocked the shot and the rebound was fired wide by Urquhart.

Four minutes later it was Angus again though on goal with the same result as Leask kept the score blank. He could do nothing seconds later as a free kick was swept into the Broch box and Kevin Fraser nodded it across goal for Shaun Wood to power a header home to give the Jags the lead.

The Broch were finding it difficult to get into the match but they equalised out of nothing on 36 minutes when Johnston and Willie West combined to find Combe on the wing and he cut inside his marker to drift a lovely cross into the middle of the Buckie area where Jamie Beagrie met it to head home.

The final chance of the half fell to Buckie when after some bagatelle in the Broch area the ball found its way to Fraser but his effort was blocked by his own player.

The Broch started the second half better and Combe’s dangerous cross was cleared for a corner. Ryan Cowie and Johnston then combined on the left to cross into the box which saw West’s header blocked and Combe’s follow up effort cleared.

Dean Cowie then swung a free kick into the box from just inside the Buckie half which bounced and Sim had to look lively to tip the ball over the bar. It was all Broch now and another raking pass from Dean Cowie found West who flicked it onto Johnston and he cut inside to fire a shot which Sim saved.

The Broch though they had taken the lead on 69 minutes when Combe and Johnston combined to play the ball into the middle which was bundled home by West but he was adjudged to have used his hand. Seven minutes later Buckie regained the lead when Angus picked the ball up 25 yards from goal and curled a shot past Leask and into the bottom corner.

Two minutes later the Broch missed a great chance to level when Ryan Cowie’s free kick from the right was met by McBride but he headed wide from 10 yards out. At the other end Angus picked up a loose ball in the Broch box and found McLeod but his shot was deflected over for a corner.

On 82 Minutes and altercation between Michael Rae and Shaun Wood on the far side saw both players receive the yellow card which meant Wood headed for an early bath having been booked earlier in the game.

With three minutes to go Angus almost made it 3-1 when he cut in from the left and fired a shot which cannoned off the crossbar. The Broch had one last chance to level when a corner from the right was cleared to the edge of the box and Rae met it but couldn’t keep his shot down and it flew over the bar.

Before then there were a number of league matches to complete. The form in March wasn’t great with two 0-0 away draws at Caledonian and Clachnacuddin being followed by defeats at Huntly by 2-0 and at home to Elgin City by 3-1 with Bertie Bowie scoring.

April was better though with 4 wins and 2 defeats. First came a 1-0 away win at Ross County with Dave McKenzie scoring. Brora were proving a real handful this season and went away from Bellslea with a 2-0 win. The Broch then hit Deveronvale for six in a 6-1 win at Banff with Bobby Fraser scoring twice, Bertie Bowie, Billy Massie, Jim Crawford and an own goal completing the rout. Billy Massie and Jim Crawford then accounted for Keith in a 2-1 win before bogey side Inverness Thistle visited Bellslea and went away with a 3-0 win. The final league match of the season saw the

Broch travel to Nairn and goals from Billy Massie, Bobby Fraser and Dave th McKenzie ensured that the Broch would finish in 7 place. Caley were champions and Forres finished with the wooden spoon.

So to the Bells Cup and the Semi Final at Peterhead which saw Newman give the home side the advantage only for McKenzie to net the Broch’s equaliser on 77 minutes from the penalty spot. With the score level after 90 minutes it was on to penalties to settle and after the home side missed all four the Broch only required two successful kicks to progress to the st Final. That was held at Keith on a scorcher of a day on 21 may. Crawford put the Broch 1-0 up on 13 minutes and Fraser added a second on 37 minutes against the run of play. However Winton pulled one back for the home side on 43 minutes. It was all Keith on the second half and it looked like an extra half hour would be required when Duncan was tripped in the box. The referee changed his mind though after consulting with the linesman and gave offside. The Broch held on to record a 2-1 victory and lift the cup again.

(continued from page 14) Fraserburgh, Highland League, 32 pages, £2.00 The Broch is very much an issue that flies under the radar but is one which has ranked highly the previous two seasons and this year is no different. Like the top three it does not lack for content and this season saw the introduction of a double page review of a past season which is a quality read. Full colour throughout it delves in-depth into that days visitors and other HL matters, and is excellent value for money.

Best of the Rest This season’s Ardeer Thistle’s Red & Black issue has once again claimed the crown of best Junior programme which they last achieved two seasons ago.

Nicely designed and illustrated, and mostly colour throughout, it’s a good read at a good price. Formartine United once again feature highly with a programme that looks the part with a nice clean layout inside, runner-up in the Highland League Clydebank’s programme is a familiar, format to last season and has the same mix of interesting features, just needs to beef out its match reports a little in order to challenge higher up. Lowland League Spartans are one of the most improved programmes this season with greatly improved in quality to match the full colour format. Penicuiks Athletics The Rookie Cuikie is a hard one to judge, it’s a weighty tome and is dominated by adverts, however actual content is well written and illustrated and well worth your £1.50. Auchinleck Talbot and their The Black & Gold Review hasn’t changed much over the last few years, and that’s a good thing as they have a format that works for them and plenty good reading. Special mention to Blairgowrie who produce a lovely 16 pager packed with info available for a donation, or free if you’re so inclined, and Leith Athletic whose issue is given away free with entry or £1 for extra issues. Initiatives that other non- issuing clubs could follow.

As I say every year, there are no losers in the competition, sadly less than a third of semi-pro non-league clubs in Scotland issue every home game so credit to all editors who go to the effort of producing a regular programme, a sometimes thankless task. Here’s hoping that this award, which is after all a bit of fun, goes some way towards encouraging other clubs to give it a go.
