The last game against Keith ended in a good 3-1 win for the guys and whilst the performance wasn’t as swashbuckling as some of the more recent ones I’m sure you were delighted to get all three points in the quest for a top three finish. What were your thoughts on the game?

Yes exactly. At this stage of the season, the most important thing is the result. I didn't think we managed to reach the heights of the weeks leading up to this game however I still felt we were well in control. Our build up play at times was good but at other times our decision making was poor. We continue this over the next few years. We are sitting weren't overly troubled in the first half and were disappointed comfortably in the top four with a good chance of claiming to come in level as I felt once we got the opening goal then third spot. This will be a great achievement for a club like we should have been able to see out the half. The goal we ours. We have scored more goals than ever before which is a conceded was very soft and I spoke at length with the guys great effort from my team as a whole. I am very happy with after as it was simply a continuation of mistakes which where we are at the minute. We suffered a set back this year ultimately ended with the ball in our net. The opening 15 with the news of three big players retiring. They have been minutes of the second half saw us back to an acceptable unbelievable servants to this club and deserve recognition for standard where we drove at Keith and played the majority of their work over their spells at this club. However, we have no the game in their half. During this period we managed to get a couple of goals, to which I thought we would kick on from but option but to give them the credit they have more than that wasn't to be. We could have and maybe should have earned and then move on. We accept that we will likely have added to our tally but with where we are in the season mixed to take a step or two back next season as a result of this in with the difficult weather conditions, I was more than however this gives more players the opportunity to come in happy to come away with the three points although I do know and play for Fraserburgh FC. These spots will have to be filled we can play better than that showing. and sometimes you need to be given an opportunity before you can shine, and next season three new individuals will be Today sees yet another encounter with Inverurie Locos and given that chance and come in to our squad. whilst we have held the upper hand so far this season I’m sure you will be telling the players that counts for nothing. I know you always think there is room for improvement so I How tough a game are you anticipating against Neil guess that the most disappointing aspect of the season Cooper’s side? would be the results in the Cups, is that a fair assessment?

The last time we played Inverurie was some time ago and I do The League Cup in particular was probably the low point of not think it will have any bearing on today’s match. Since we our season. No disrespect to Deveronvale as on the day they last played we have lost a few players to long term injuries deserved to win as they were better than us, but we were at who will be out for the season and Inverurie have already home and on a good run so I thought we had a great chance started preparing for next season so it will almost certainly be but it was not to be. We were disappointed in the final last a different game tomorrow than the previous ones this season. season and wanted to go one better this season but we failed Neil has allowed a fair few from his squad to leave and this at the first hurdle, but to be fair we bounced back pretty well takes a lot of bravery but I have seen their U20's side over the from this. Another game which I was gutted about was the last couple of seasons and I know that in that mix were quite Auchinleck Talbot game in the Scottish Cup. I felt we had a a number of youngsters who showed potential so it now looks really good chance to progress and although I do not like like these players are ready to step up to the first team and excuses, I still feel that had I had certain players available for credit to Neil and the staff at Locos for allowing them the the game then there is a good chance the result could have chance to show what they are about. This will be a very been different. Do not get me wrong we barely laid a glove on difficult game and I have drummed that into the players all them that day but when you consider who was missing against week that we need to make sure we are at the races or we a big physical side then you realise that things could have could end up short. It should be a very good game with two been different. I tend to not dwell on things for too long good teams at the right end of the table giving youth a chance though as I don't think it’s healthy. Defeat is part of the game to perform. and you have to accept that. I try to learn from my defeats of ways to make us better rather than anything else. The rest of With this being the last programme column of the season the campaign to date has gone well for us so hopefully we can what would you say have been the highlights to date in finish on a high, although we are well aware how difficult the what is looking like another breaking League test is today. campaign? All the Best, That is the most pleasing thing, the fact that we are still improving and getting better. We have done this after each Mark season that I have been in charge and we will strive to

Afternoon folks,

After a week off we’re back with a home tie against Locos, we’ve played them a few times this season and had the upper hand in most of these, we know however that it means nothing today and we need to be at our very best to beat them. We have a few players missing again but thankfully welcome back Willie West, a huge boost for us as we’ve missed his ability within the team (even though we have been in excellent form).

Locos have had an indifferent season but are a danger to every team in the league as they have some quality players, we will need to be at our very best to get the 3 points Ryan Christie Testimonial Events 2019 we need to almost cement 3rd place in the league.

Ryan has announced a Our last game was our rearranged match with Keith and as I predicted we won number of events to comfortably, the same as the game that was abandoned! It wasn’t as good as our celebrate his testimonial previous performances but we had more than enough to get the 3 points. year.

Unfortunately today we say our goodbyes to 3 legends of FFC, Gizzy, Mikey and Dicko. It will commence with a Golf Day at Fraserburgh Gizzy has been here through all of my time at the club and is undoubtedly one of the Golf Club on Sunday 5th most gifted players I’ve played against, the amount of huge goals he has scored in his May. time at the club and his consistency is second to none. He’s going to be a huge miss but we all have fantastic memories of what he has provided the club with so we say That will be followed by a our best wishes to him and all of his family, hopefully we see him back at the Bellslea Testimonial Match against on a regular basis, from me Giz it’s been an absolute pleasure and we’ll miss you. Peterhead Football Club th on Saturday 6 July at Bellslea Park kick off 3pm. Dicko is the next one to be leaving us, he’s been struggling with an injury all of this year and his work and family commitments now make it difficult for him to commit to The final event is a Dinner the club which is understandable. If you were to ask any ex and current Broch players Dance at Fraserburgh I’m sure 99% of them would agree Dicko is the man for the big games, his strength and Leisure Centre on th power (mainly from his arse) has made him one of the best right backs in the league Saturday 24 August. and that is some achievement. Again we wish him and his family all the best and we hope to see you back at the Bellslea in the future, a big miss for the club. More details to follow.

Through their commitment to the club both of these guys were rewarded with their testimonials, again testament to their service to this fantastic club.

Mikey Rae, what a player! The most I can say about him is that in all my time at the club he is only just pipped by Mikey Stephen for first name on the team sheet, but nowadays he is my first name on the team sheet! An unbelievable player and an even better person, so honest and hard working I can imagine he’d be a nightmare to play against. He’s still young and extremely fit so hopefully in years to come we see him back in the Broch jersey. To come from the juniors and make such an impact in the Highland League at a top club like ours is brilliant, he’ll be a huge miss to the squad but as always we wish him and all his family the very best going forward. You’ll be missed!

As this is our final home game of the season I’d like to thank each and every one of our fans for your continued support over the season, we hope to see you up at Clach and Fort William for our final two games, if not enjoy the break and we’ll see you all at the start of the 2019/2020 season.

Enjoy the game, All the best, Boom

MATCH REPORT - KEITH

Breedon Scottish Highland Football League, Fraserburgh v Keith, Saturday 16th March 2019

The Broch were unchanged for the third game in a row and were looking to make it six league wins on the bounce and also ensure that they wouldn't rue the weather conditions from the original fixture which ultimately saw the match abandoned when they were leading 4-2 with 13 minutes remaining. Jamie Beagrie returned from his work commitments to take his place on the bench.

Both teams cancelled each other out for the first 15 minutes but it was the Broch who fashioned the first chance in the th 17 minute when Ryan Cowie’s ball into the feet of Scott Barbour was flicked on to Sean Butcher who then played in Paul Campbell in the right channel but his shot was well saved by Greg Simpson. Keith’s first real effort at goal came on the half hour when a corner from the left by Max Berton was headed over by the unmarked Macauley Rae from eight yards out. A minute later a long ball forward by Ryan Cowie found Scott Barbour just onside and as he tried to chip the onrushing keeper the Keith custodian got just enough on the ball to prevent a goal.

On 33 minutes Craig MacAskill drove down the left and cut inside before seeing his shot drift wide of Edward Flinn’s goal. The Broch took the lead on 38 minutes after a bit of a melee inside the Keith penalty area which saw Paul Young’s initial shot blocked but as the rebound spun up into the air Paul Campbell found space to loop a header over the visitors defence and into the net.

It was almost 2-0 on 41 minutes when Scott Barbour beat two defenders on the bye-line before picking out Sean Butcher with a cross but the Broch striker couldn’t force the ball home. Keith equalised on 44 minutes when Michael Selfridge played Cameron Keith in on goal but his effort was saved by Edward Flinn, the ball was played back into the Broch penalty area and only half cleared as far as Max Berton at the edge of the box and he fired home with the aid of a big deflection.

Half Time: Fraserburgh 1 Keith 1

Three minutes after the break the Broch regained the lead when Scott Barbour fired home after a scramble inside the Keith penalty area. The home side extended their lead on 52 minutes when Paul Young saw his effort saved by Greg Simpson but Sean Butcher was on hand to knock home the rebound.

On 58 minutes Lewis Davidson found Paul Campbell on the right and his cross was just out of the reach on the inrushing Scott Barbour. A minute later Aidan Combe picked the ball up on the left and fed it on to Scott Barbour but he saw his effort deflected wide. From the resultant short corner Scott Barbour made space for a shot which was deflected on target by Bryan Hay but Greg Simpson did well to save low to his left. A second corner was played in by Ryan Cowie and Sean Butcher rose well but saw his effort cleared off the line.

Paul Young then released Paul Campbell on the right on 64 minutes but his shot across the keeper was just wide of the far post. Keith weren’t giving up home of a comeback and two minutes later Craig MacAskill’s header at the back post was blocked by Ryan Cowie. Jamie McAllister was then booked for a trip on Scott Barbour and Greg Buchan curled the free kick just wide of the upright.

With the game entering the final 15 minutes Edward Flinn misjudged a long ball forward and Cameron Keith nipped in but Ryan Cowie got back to clear the ball away at the expense of a corner. On 79 minutes Jamie Beagrie released Paul Campbell on the right and he drove forward before cutting inside his marker and firing a shot straight at Greg Simpson.

With four minutes left Callum Porteous’ cross fell invitingly for Cameron Keith but the visitors hot shot saw his effort deflected over the crossbar. The Broch then broke forward in the last minute and Jamie Beagrie found Greg Buchan inside the area but as he tried to poke the ball past the Keith keeper from a tight angle he was denied.

NORTHERNMATCH SLANT REPORT BY PETER- KEITH MYERS

Andy Beattie: Inverurie Locos’ greatest player A collection of footballer’s medals takes pride of place in the boardroom of Inverurie Loco Works FC. They are an enduring tribute to the club’s greatest player, Andy Beattie, who found fame with Preston North End with whom he won seven Scotland caps. His playing career was interrupted by World War II but he later took on the role of football manager and was at the helm of a number of English clubs as well as being appointed Scotland’s first team boss in 1954.

Beattie was born at Kintore in 1913 and began his long career in football with Inverurie Rovers in 1929 before moving to Inverurie Loco Works the following year. He worked as a quarryman while playing for the Locies and represented the club in the Aberdeenshire Junior team. Preston North End relied heavily on Scottish players in the 1930s and depended on their scouts to spot youngsters who showed promise. Beattie’s potential was recognised and he was signed by the Deepdale club on March 2, 1935 for a fee of £125. He was a left-half at the time and played for more than a season in that position for the club’s reserve team. He was promoted to the first team and towards the end of 1937 was moved to the right-back position.

Beattie was playing at left-back when he caught the attention of the Scotland selectors who saw him in action during the FA Cup semi-final in March 1937. He was chosen to represent his country against England at Hampden the following month in which the Scots won 3-1 with Beattie’s Preston team-mate, Frank O’Donnell, scoring one of the goals. Beattie had a tough debut as he was up against maestro winger Stanley Matthews. The attendance was an incredible 149,547 although it’s reckoned that only 100,000 of those fans would have actually seen the match. That gate and a record attendance of 42,684 at Deepdale for the Lily Whites’ clash with Arsenal in 1938 must have seemed to Beattie a world away from Harlaw Park where he had played a few years earlier.

Scottish footballers plying their trade in England were known as Anglos and were prominent with northern clubs. There were four Scots in Sunderland’s side which triumphed over Preston in the 1937 FA Cup Final, while there were no fewer than seven in the successful Preston team the following year, including Beattie. The winning goal against Huddersfield Town was a penalty -kick converted in the last minute of extra-time by George Mutch, who had begun his career with Banks O’Dee and had arrived at Deepdale via Arbroath and Manchester United.

Beattie was again at left-back when Scotland beat the “Auld Enemy” 1-0 at Wembley in 1938. Also in the team were Preston colleagues , Tom Smith and George Mutch while O’Donnell now starred for Blackpool.

An accolade for players in the 1930s was when they appeared on cigarette cards and Beattie was among them. He featured in a series of 50 Association Footballers issued by Churchman’s Cigarettes at the end of the decade. It mentioned that he was a native of Kintore and that he had played for Inverurie Loco Works before he joined Preston North End.

Beattie joined the Army Physical Training Corps during the war, and in early 1940 was a member of an 18- strong British Army football squad which played three show games against the French Army in Paris, Reims and Lille. Among his team-mates were (Liverpool), (Wolverhampton Wanderers) and (Everton).

Beattie left Preston in 1947 and was manager of Barrow and Stockport County before being recruited in 1952 by Huddersfield Town, who he was unable to prevent being relegated to Division Two. He strengthened his squad with some shrewd signings including inside-forward Jimmy Watson, who had been in the Motherwell side who lifted the Scottish Cup in 1952. The Terriers returned to the top flight after a season’s absence.

Andy Beattie had the distinction of being the first Scotland team manager when he was appointed in February 1954. Unfortunately for him, the prevailing practice of both the Scottish Football Association and clubs was that the manager was not entitled to have full control of the team. Beattie claimed he had been appointed without direction, preparation, or backing and quit the post during the 1954 World Cup. He was given a second chance in March 1959 but problems later arose when he clashed with Scotland captain over tactics for a match against Austria. The SFA were stunned when Beattie asked to be excused on the eve of the match against Wales at , preferring instead to watch his new club, Nottingham Forest, play at Blackpool.

He missed seeing in action the young , who he had signed for Huddersfield on April 3 1955. The 15- year-old Aberdeen schoolboy had been spotted by Beattie’s brother, Archie, and although he may have had initial doubts about the puny, bespectacled youngster, his faith in Law’s potential was justified when he went on to become one of Scotland’s all-time greats, winning 55 caps between 1959 and 1974. The only occasion Law played in a senior match in his native city was in 1973 when he turned out for Manchester City against

Aberdeen in a pre-season friendly.

Beattie retired from football in the late 1960s and continued to retain his ties with Aberdeenshire. He served as honorary vice-president of Inverurie Loco Works for many years and would come up from his Nottingham home every summer to visit his parents at Kintore. Andy Beattie died in 1983, aged 70, and some years later his daughter, Mrs Andrea Younger, presented her father’s medals to Locos captain Iain Alexander and they were put on display in the club’s boardroom.

FAREWELLHIGHLAND – GRAHAM LEAGUE ROUND JOHNSTON UP

Fraserburgh Football Club can confirm that Graham Johnston will call time on his playing career at the end of the current season.

Manager, Mark Cowie has had discussions with Graham recently after he had indicated that this would be his last season in a Black & White shirt and having not been able to persuade him otherwise he will now look to the future without the experienced striker.

Mark said “Graham Johnston can look back on what he has achieved at Fraserburgh FC with nothing but pride. He has been a huge part of the history of the club over the last twelve to fifteen years and undoubtedly puts his name quite rightly in amongst all the other Broch legends who have graced Bellslea”. “He came on the scene just after me but even from that age we could all see that Graham had talent. His knowledge of the game was very good meaning he could easily do a job as a striker or as a full back, wherever he was required. That said, I have spoken with many great defenders over the years who have all commented that Gizzy is one of the hardest strikers they have ever played against, and that takes some doing”. “His goal record speaks for itself, but it’s the importance of some of his goals which make him such a special player to me. Cup finals, Scottish Cup ties, big league games it didn’t matter, we as team mates knew that in Graham we had a match winner and boy did he produce when we needed him too. I know how hard and tough a decision this has been for Graham and that is simply down to his love for the game, but more so for Fraserburgh FC. His commitment over the years to our club cannot be questioned and it has been an honour to have played alongside him and to have managed him during my spells at FFC. All the best Graham, to you and your family”.

Gizzy as he is more commonly known signed on ‘S’ forms for the club in October 2000 before signing a professional contract in June 2004. He had already made his first team debut by them playing against Fort William in March 2003 and scored his first goal in December of the same year in a 4-2 win over Wick Academy. He has gone on to make 501 appearances for the Broch scoring 168 times which places him third top scorer in the club’s history. As Mark says he also had a happy knack of scoring on the big stage netting against Cove Rangers in the League Cup Final in 2006 and in the Aberdeenshire Cup wins against Formartine in 2012 (also scoring in the penalty shootout – care to share what you said to the Formartine player on your way back to the halfway line Giz?) and Buckie Thistle in 2014. His honours include the Aberdeenshire Cup three times, the Aberdeenshire Shield twice and the Qualifying Cup & Highland League Cup once each. He also represented his country in the Four Nations Semi Professional Tournament in 2008 in Wales. Graham holds the record for the most Scottish Cup goals for the club - 15.

When asked about his highlights the following he replied, “League Cup Final 2005/2006 - 1st trophy with the club and scored opening goal (pen) - played right back marking Paul Coutts in a 4-1 win v Cove”.

“Aberdeenshire Cup Final 2012/2013 - down 2-0 to big spending Formartine at half time who thought they had won before a ball was kicked! Zak Conway came off bench to score then I scored one of the best goals of my career to equalise with 5 minutes to go - went on to win on pens”. “Scottish Cup 3rd Round 2013/2014 - 1-0 down at home to Montrose with 15 minutes to go but advantage of shooting towards the garage end downwind in the second half - I equalised with best goal of my career at the time and when Grant Noble netted the winner in injury time is the biggest roar I've heard at Bellslea - great times”.

“Scottish Cup 2nd Round 2015/2016 - knowing that the winner went to play Falkirk away on the 3rd Round made this game even more special. Best goal of my career by a mile took us back to 1-1 at half time. Turriff went 2-1 up before Marc Lawrence equalised. When Darren Mackie knocked over his own line in injury time it was one of the best moments of my career”. “Deveronvale Aberdeenshire Cup Quarter Final at Bellslea 2018/19 - my 400th game was a special one scoring the winner in a 1-0 win - my 150th Goal for the club”.

“Turriff Away - League 2017/2018 - my testimonial dinner was at night and when Willie pulled up in the warm up I was called up - scored the winner in a 1-0 win with 5 minutes to go to become 3rd top scorer in FFC history - brilliant day & night”. “Deveronvale Home League Cup 2018/2019 - my 500th game for the club and came on with 15 minutes to go and scored a free kick with 1st touch to equalise - pretty special even though we eventually lost”.

“I’d like to thank everyone who has been connected with the club in any way since I arrived - It’s been a pleasure to wear the black and white shirt for the past 16 years and as a fan wish the club every success in the future”!

Someone who has been around the club during this time is Fraserburgh FC Chairman Finlay Noble. He said “I always find it difficult to see players leave the club and especially ones who have been here for a long time and have given so much to the club. Graham Johnston is in that category. I see the club as a big family and it will sad to see him depart but it goes without saying that he will always be welcome at Bellslea Park.” “He has been a credit not only to himself but to the club. We wish him all the very best for the future.”

FAREWELLHIGHLAND LEAGUE– MARC ROUND DICK UPSON

Fraserburgh Football Club can confirm that Marc Dickson will retire from football at the end of the current season.

Manager, Mark Cowie has been talking to the Broch full back/midfielder after he indicated that it was getting harder to recover from injuries he had picked up over the past two years. As with Graham Johnston he was not able to persuade

Marc otherwise and accepted the decision earlier this week.

Mark said “Marc Dickson is another player who has been a great servant to FFC. I have said before that when he came on the scene he had big boots to fill in the form of Derek Milne but very few, if any, can complain about the career Marc has given the club. Strong, powerful and aggressive were traits which Marc had plenty of and this is why he made himself a top full back at this level. Again, as a team mate it was great to go in to games knowing Marc was at full back as he was steady and we knew that the opposition wingers were going to have to be at the very top of their game to get the better of him. Again I wish Marc and his family all the very best going forward and thank him for his efforts during my time as FFC manager. Good Luck.”

Marc Dickson, who was an ‘S’ form signing at Elgin City before he joined the club in August 2005, made his debut against Inverurie Loco Works the same month. He scored his first goal just over a year later in an Aberdeenshire Cup Semi Final against Deveronvale and has gone on to make 456 appearances for the club scoring 22 times. Two of his most important goals came in the Qualifying Cup Final against Keith in November 2006 which the Broch won 2-1 it was also the last final in the competition’s history and the Aberdeenshire Shield Final in May 2016 which the Broch won 1-0 against Cove Rangers.

In all Marc has won the Aberdeenshire Cup three times, the Aberdeenshire Shield twice and the Qualifying Cup & Highland

League Cup once each.

When asked about his career at the Broch, Marc said “I would just like to take the opportunity to thank everyone connected with the club during my 14 years there. I have been fortunate to have had a lot of success in my time at the

Broch, some great memories over the years, but the time has come for me to move on with my life. I would like to wish the players, coaching staff and all the great people behind the scenes continued success in the years to come…….Awa The

Burry.”

He also looked back on some of his memorable moments in a Broch shirt:

“Foster’s Highland League Cup Final 05/06 - my first season with the Broch and we managed to get to the final. It was played at Kynoch Park, Keith against a very strong Cove Rangers side. We won 4-1 that day in front of a big crowd with goals from Graham Johnston (Pen), Michael Stephen, Steven Main and William West. Yours truly was awarded the man of the match award at the end of game, which means a lot with the amount of talent that was on the park that day.”

“Tennents Scottish Qualifying Cup Final (North) 06/07 - we faced Keith at Princess Royal Park in Banff. This was to be the last ever Qualifying Cup Final so whoever won would be permanent holders of the cup. Keith went 1-0 midway through the 1st half and it could of been more if hadn’t been for Billy Gordon, just before half-time I picked up the ball from a loose pass from a Keith player and managed to curl the ball home from 25 yards to have us 1-1 at the break. Second half Mikey Stephen managed a front post header with 20 minutes to go and that was enough to give us a 2-1 win and take the Cup back to the Bellslea.”

“Morrison Motors Aberdeenshire Shield 15/16 - Cove Rangers were our opponents in the final, who had just won the league and we were down to the bare bones with 5 key players missing out through injury and suspension. On paper everything was pointing to a Cove win but if you know the Broch over the years, this is when we come out fighting and we did. A tight first half with not many chances, second half we started to have a go and had a few chances at the Cove end. Then with 5 minutes to go and extra time looming, Ryan Cowie floated a free kick onto the edge of the Cove box and I managed to get on the end of it with a downward header to beat the keeper. It was a great feeling to score the winner so late on in a Cup Final.”

William Hill Scottish Cup 4th Round 17/18 - Fraserburgh vs. Rangers - One of the dream ties every club looks for when you get to the 4th round of the Scottish Cup and the Broch got it. From the minute the draw was made the National Media was all over the club and the town, myself and my team mates have never experienced anything like it but it was good to be apart of. The game itself, we contained Rangers as best we could but a Josh Windass hat-trick made sure Rangers got the job done. All in all it was a great experience to be apart of a game that was shown around the world by .

Someone who has been around the club during this period is Fraserburgh FC Chairman Finlay Noble. He said “I always find it difficult to see players leave the club and especially ones who have devoted their careers to the club and have given so much for the shirt. Like Graham, Marc Dickson’s contribution comes into that category. This is a family club and the whole community comes along to support the team including player’s family and friends. It will be sad to see Marc depart but it goes without saying that he will always be welcome back at Bellslea.” “Marc has been a real credit to the club and also himself. We wish him and his family all the very best for the future.”

Scottish Highland Football Under 17 League - East, Fraserburgh v Huntly, Monday 25th March 2019

The Broch took the lead after six minutes when Zane Laird drove forward and clipped the ball past Sandy Watt from 12 yards. Ryan Strachan had a good chance 14 minutes later but he sliced his shot wide of goal. On 23 minutes the same player had another great chance after Ryan Milne’s cross but he lifted his effort over the crossbar. He made no mistake two minutes later though after Ryan Milne saw his shot palmed away by the Huntly keeper Ryan Strachan was on hand to slide the ball into the empty net. The Broch were swarming all over Huntly and next to try his luck was Scott Murison who controlled Zane Laird’s cross but the Huntly keeper saved on the goal line. Calum Buchan then got into the act on 28 minutes when after a good run and shot from the edge of the box but it went just wide. Keigan Mathers went close with a shot from distance on 38 minutes but it was the Broch who extended their lead on 44 minutes when Ryan Milne’s cross was turned into his own net by the unfortunate Owen Morris. A minute later though the visitors were thrown a lifeline when Jamie Coutts forced the ball home.

Half time: Fraserburgh 3 Huntly 1

The Broch came out looking to restore their three goal lead and Zane Laird saw his effort on 51 minutes deflected wide. Calum Buchan also went close on 57 minutes and five minutes later Zane Laird’s cross rebounded off the crossbar but Ryan Milne couldn’t force the rebound home. Ross Coutts created a chance on 67 minutes when his cross fell to Ryan Strachan but Scott Morrison pulled off a brilliant save to deny the Broch striker. Five minutes later Calum Buchan’s corner was met by the head of Kyle Inglis but the Huntly keeper pulled off another great save. Huntly weren’t giving up and a free kick by Keigan Mathers was headed over by Paul Davidson on 73 minutes. Their resolve though was broken four minutes later when Scott Murison’s cross was controlled by Kyle Inglis and he turned his man before firing home. On 86 minutes it was 5-1 with Ross Taylor pouncing on a mistake by the Huntly keeper to score. In the last minute Lewis Noble though he had scored a sixth but his header was well saved by Scott Morrison in the Huntly goal.

HIGHLAND LEAGUEFAREWELL STATS – MICHAEL SEASON RAE 201 8-19

Fraserburgh Football Club can confirm that Michael Rae will also call time on his playing career at the end of the current

season.

Manager, Mark Cowie has tried to persuade the Broch midfield dynamo to continue beyond the current campaign but has now admitted defeat and will plan for the future without the experienced midfielder. Mark said “Michael Rae has been like a diamond in the rough for me. He was one of my first signings when I took over from Kris as manager and 4 years on it can be argued that he has been one of my best. The best thing I can say about Michael is that he is the sort of player that sometimes goes unnoticed because he does a lot of the dirty work in a game, but boy do you notice when he is not there. Of late, we as a team play better when Michael is on the park. It appears that his presence alone lifts his team mates and gives them an added belief that we can do well”.

“His career was mainly spent in the juniors at Maud FC but I think he is an excellent example of how it is never too late to make a step up. He was mid to late twenties when he came to FFC and since then he has been one of my main players in the squad. The fact that he scooped all of the end of season awards after his first year shows how much his team mates think of him. He is a huge character in our dressing room and one which we will undoubtedly miss. Michael I wish you all the very best for the future with Nadine and your son/daughter upon their arrival in August. Take care”.

Michael Rae actually made his debut for the club back in April 2006 against Forres Mechanics. He spent two and a half seasons on loan at Maud Juniors before making the transfer permanent at the start of the 2008/9 season. In all Mikey made 300 plus appearances for Maud wining the Grill League Cup in 2011 which was the club’s first trophy. He was also made club captain by then manager and current Broch assistant James Duthie. He returned to the Broch in November 2015 scoring on his second debut against Rothes and has gone on to make 124 appearances scoring 6 times and whilst his efforts at goal were more likely to end up over the shed behind the town end his all round contribution cannot be understated. As well as his Aberdeenshire Shield winners medal he was also named Players Player of the Year and Mark Dewar Memorial Trophy winner in 2016-17 and has picked up the Supporters Club Goal of the Season award for the past two seasons (pick those ones out!!).

Michael said his highlights of his time at the Broch were “winning the Aberdeenshire Shield against Cove Rangers at Harlaw Park and playing in the Scottish Cup match against Rangers at Bellslea Park. Whilst I was disappointed not to start the game, to come on and play a part in it as well as being involved in the whole build up is something I’ll never forget. I have loved every minute since I’ve come back to the club and my only regret is that I only managed to play 4/5 seasons”.

Fraserburgh FC Chairman Finlay Noble was present when Michael re-signed for the club in 2015 and said “when I and Mark Cowie met with him to get all the paperwork done I asked Michael privately if Mark had explained the wages to him? His response was that he would be happy to play for the Broch for nothing and was delighted just to get the chance. That sums up Michael and we will be losing a great person not just a footballer. Whilst Michael hasn’t been at the club for as long as some of the others his overall contribution both on and off the pitch cannot be underestimated. As with Graham & Marc it will be sad to see him go but he and his family will always be welcome back at Bellslea Park.” “We wish him all the very best for the future.”

“I’m sure that as many Broch supporters as possible will want to turn up for the Inverurie Locos game on Saturday to pay their own tribute to Michael.”

SSPPOONNSSOORRALFIE’SSS PPAAGGEE ANGLE–– PPBBPP SS EERRVVIICCEESS

With the football season now drawing to a close in the next couple of months, perhaps it’s a good time to reflect on a couple of topical items.

Highland League

In my opinion, the Highland League is the best value for money League in terms of entertainment, excitement and goals. From early on in the Championship race, Cove established a good lead at the top of the table which they’ve never really relinquished. Brora very briefly hit the top a few weeks ago but Cove had a couple of games to make up thereafter in which they have re-established their lead at the top again.

Cove have been incredibly consistent racking up win after win and playing very good football. They have a strong squad and no matter what team John Sheran puts out, they inevitably win. They also produce a good brand of football. They are now just a few games away from clinching the Championship again. Thereafter, entry to the Scottish Leagues surely beckons…….

Bror a, Broch and Formartine have been in the top 4 all season and have generally been very consistent. In terms of the Broch, the odd dropping of points here and there has cost them dearly in their pursuit of the title. All in all though, the Broch have played some scintillating football this season scoring an incredible amount of goals. Their performance in the 5 -0 destruction of Inverurie Locos at Harlaw Park earlier this season was just about as flawless a performance you will see.

You certainly get ‘goals galore’ in the Highland League and poor Fort William and Lossiemouth have borne the brunt of most of them. Nobody likes to see double figure scores regularly being shipped by those clubs but give them their due, they both try to play football even in adversity. Next year’s winners? – the Broch closely followed by Formartine and Brora, you heard it here first…..!!

Scotland - Where do I start?!

Following the national team over the years has been ‘hard work’ to say the least. Long gone are the days when we q ualified for the likes of World Cups and European Championships. The last two internationals against Kazakhstan and San Marino were ‘grim’ to say the least.

What do we do – sack the manager, get rid of the ‘Blazers’ at the SFA, play different players, play to a certain system and stick with it through thick and thin?

Looking at the ‘evidence’ of the last two games, it appeared that Alex McLeish picked the players that were available to him, with some of the so-called regulars missing due to either injury or not being comfortable playing on an artificial surface (in Kazakhstan). McLeish was in a ‘no win’ situation, he can only play the hand he is dealt with – most of us would have probably picked the teams McLeish did with the players he had available.

I think the media/football journalists and social media are mainly to blame as it whips up a frenzy every time there is a Scotland match and, of course, many fans jump on the bandwagon and vent their frustrations on the players, manager and the ‘Blazers’.

In reality, I really think we are not good enough with foreign players and teams being of greater technical ability, even the so -called smaller nations. They seem to have greater control of the ball, are very fit and usually play to a tried and trusted sy stem. Individually, some of the Scottish players are very good but for some reason or another, it just doesn’t happen collectively.

Perhaps we should just ‘bite the bullet’ and give whatever manager is in charge some reasonable amount of time in charge (s ay 3 years?) and play a particular system (e.g. defensive, attacking, ‘diamond shape’ etc.). Perhaps I should be the next Scotland manager?!

Enjoy today’s game.

Alfie Smith (Alfie’s thoughts are his own and do not necessarily reflect those of Fraserburgh Football Club).
