By reading journals, literary works, and cultural criticism, this study inserts Brazilian literature and culture into recent debates about translatability, world literature, and cosmopolitanism, while also underscoring the often-overlooked presence of Brazilians in the United States. The first half of the dissertation contends that Portuguese-language periodicals Correio Braziliense (London, 1808-1822), Revista Nitheroy (Paris, 1836), and O Novo Mundo (New York, 1870-1879) translated European and North American ideas of technology and education to a readership primarily in Brazil. The transnational circulation of these periodicals contributed to the self- fashioning of intellectuals who came to define the nation. To suggest parallels between Brazil and the United States in the late 19th century, the analysis of O Novo Mundo focuses on discourses of nation, modernity, and technological progress emerging in the hemispheric travels of scientists, intellectuals, and the Brazilian empire Dom Pedro II, and in the national displays at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. The second half of the dissertation proposes a counterpoint to the 19th century by analyzing literature, cultural criticism, and art from the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The national coexists with the transnational in both historical periods as Brazilian intellectuals and artists look beyond Brazil in order to refine their definitions of the nation as modern. Contemporary writers like Silviano Santiago and Adriana Lisboa find themselves at home not in Brazil, but rather within the translation zones of the Americas. For Santiago, translating French theory to the Latin American context informs his concept of the space in-between, which in turn manifests itself in his fiction about Brazilians in the United States. This analysis examines how Santiago and Lisboa develop translational aesthetics in their narratives through code switching and cultural references in order to better capture the displacement experienced by their transnational characters. The relative success in translation of Lisboa’s tales of immigrant lives suggests a preference for translatability in the global literary market. Research travels to Brazil, Portugal, and Washington D.C. enriched this project through archival work and conversations with artists and scholars. The resources at the Biblioteca Nacional (Rio de Janeiro), the Instituto Geográfico e Histórico Brasileiro (Rio de Janeiro), the Museu Imperial (Petrópolis), and the Oliveira Lima Library (Washington D.C.) proved useful in the research and writing of chapter one and two. Maria Leal was particularly helpful in sorting through the vast collection at the Oliveira Lima Library. Decades have passed since the Boom ended and yet the period remains controversial among critics. Was it a literary movement or a marketing phenomenon? Why were certain authors (Gabriel García Márquez, Mario Vargas Llosa, Carlos Fuentes, etc.) given pride of place over others (Guillermo Cabrera Infante, Severo Sarduy, Augusto Roa Bastos)? Who was primarily responsible for making the Boom such an unprecedented success in international literary circles? This much is agreed upon: in roughly one decade, Latin American fiction emerged from obscurity in Europe and the United States to become a major critical and commercial phenomenon. International recognition had already been bestowed upon Latin American poets such as Pablo Neruda, Gabriel Cobb 76 Mistral, and César Vallejo earlier in the twentieth century while fiction writers remained curiously neglected in what Pascale Casanova has called the “World Republic of Letters.” With the Boom in the early 1960s, however, for the first time in history, Latin American writers were widely translated, published, and awarded the most prestigious literary prizes on the planet. At the risk of oversimplifying matters, there are essentially two strands of thought regarding the Boom’s overwhelming critical and commercial success. There are its supporters, who believe that Boom novels flourished because of the writers’ full embrace of cosmopolitan modernism, or what Goethe called Weltliteratur, a concept of literature as a space existing outside national or linguistic boundaries.

    THAIS NICODEMO Music Censorship and Brazilian Popular Music (MPB) throughout Brazil’s Civil-Military Dictatorship (1964-1985) Introduction: Popular music as an eminent threat This article presents a panoramic view on the relationship between popular music and censorship during civil-military regime in Brazil (1964-1985). The research is based on the analysis of several documents produced during the period held at the Arquivo Nacional (National Archive), in Brasília. Among the documents in the archive are orig- inal versions of lyrics, censors’ reports and letters addressing censorship, written by record label personnel and artists, advocating the approval of prohibited songs. Although there have been extensive and important studies on censorship in this period, the specific subject of music censorship has still been little explored in the academic field in Brazil and has been gaining more attention since the opening of the music censorship archives to public consultation in the early 1990s. In 2012, the Comissão Nacional da Verdade (National Truth Commission) was created, aiming to investigate human right violations by the state, especially during the civil-military dictatorship in Brazil, giving particular attention to several documents produced dur- ing the regime, including censorship documents. This fact represents the possibil- ity of a revision of Brazil’s history and stimulates civil society to debate about the dictator ship period, which still leaves strong traces in the recent and fragile trajectory of democracy in the country. When I consulted the material at the Arquivo Nacional, in 2013, the documents were in a poor state of conservation, without detailed cata- loguing of content.

    Entre a sociedade e a política: a produção intelectual de Arthur Azevedo (1873-1897) Giselle Pereira Nicolau* Arthur Azevedo viveu uma época de mudanças. Nascido em São Luís do Maranhão, em 14 de julho de 1855, este deixou a terra natal aos 18 anos, em busca de oportunidades na Corte.1 No Rio de Janeiro, foi jornalista, cronista e funcionário público, mas destacou-se como autor de teatro. Arthur testemunhou a passagem do Império à República, fazendo desse conjunto de acontecimentos, matéria e cenário para suas crônicas, contos e peças teatrais, em especial, em suas Revistas de Ano. Quando chegou ao Rio de Janeiro em 1873, com o objetivo de trabalhar no jornalismo e no teatro, o jovem de apenas 18 anos, iniciou suas atividades na folha A Reforma, dirigido por Joaquim Serra,2 um dos precursores da moderna imprensa política brasileira. Periódico de cunho liberal tinha, entre os colaboradores, nomes como os de Joaquim Nabuco, Rodrigo Otávio e Cesário Alvim. A redação do semanário era ponto de encontro de políticos, como Francisco Otaviano, Afonso Celso, que posteriormente veio a se tornar o Visconde Ouro Preto, e Tavares Bastos, além de outras figuras ligadas ao Partido Liberal. Não obstante a baixa remuneração, o trabalho jornalístico abria as portas para jovens que desejavam seguir carreira literária. Algo muito comum nessa época, o apadrinhamento ou mecenato, para usar a expressão de Machado Neto, dava oportunidades na imprensa para jovens que desejavam ganhar a vida com as letras (NETO, 1973: 11). Com Arthur Azevedo não ocorreu de outra maneira. Recém-chegado do Maranhão, onde havia desempenhado funções de jornalista, encontrou espaço no periodismo carioca, por intermédio de seu conterrâneo, Joaquim Serra.

    International Journal of Communication 13(2019), 1167–1185 1932–8036/20190005 The Children Are Watching: A History of Age-Rating Television in Brazil LIAM GREALY1 CATHERINE DRISCOLL The University of Sydney, Australia ANDREA LIMBERTO The National Service for Commercial Education and University of São Paulo, Brazil Histories of Brazilian media regulation typically emphasize a major transformation with the passing of the federal constitution in 1988, contrasting censorship during the military period of 1964‒1985 with age rating, or “indicative classification,” thereafter. Contemporary conflicts among child advocates, television broadcasters, and the state as monitor of the industry’s self-regulation are grounded in a much longer history of age rating in popular media. Drawing on an examination of files from Brazil’s Ministry of Justice and interviews with current examiners, this article provides a history of age ratings for television in Brazil and of the processes by which classification decisions are made. We argue that the desire to limit young people’s access to television through age ratings has had significant ramifications in Brazil, evident in the formation of legal regimes, reform of institutional practices, and even the revision of time zones. Keywords: media classification, age rating, youth, minority, time zones, legal reform, Brazilian television, telenovelas The passing of Brazil’s federal constitution in 1988 was a central achievement in the nation’s transition from a prolonged era of military government to renewed democracy. Regarding media regulation, the constitution is usually understood as a shift from state-led censorship characterized by inconsistency, opaque decision making, and restrictions on political criticism to protected freedom of expression with media subjected to a system of differentiated age-based classifications.

Sex! Soccer! What do these stereotypes about Brazil reflect? Where do they come from? The Portuguese phrase país do samba e do futebol—“the country of samba and soccer”—expresses a sometimes ironic self-consciousness about these hallmarks of identity and perception of what Brazil is, both in Brazil and beyond. So, then, what is Brazil—or Brazilianness? In this class we will think about the ways in which people and cultures in Brazil have developed, been represented, been fantasized about, and why these things are so. We’ll explore where samba comes from and how it came to be Brazil’s “national” dance; why Brazil has so often been identified with sensuality and sexuality, especially sensual femininity; and what does make soccer important in Brazil. We’ll think about how and why ideas about Brazilianness range from deep, medieval Catholicism to oversexed libertinism; from “savage” and “underdeveloped” to urbane and techy; and from “Latin” to African to indigenous. At the heart of our stories will be questions about sexuality, gender, race, nation-building, and identity—we will use sources ranging from novels to sociological studies to films to analyze the ways these tropes have shaped the idea of Brazil, within and without.
