When a hotel makes these moments possible, frames them, heightens them and allows the sharing of them with others, we naturally build strong associations in mind and memory. Collect magazine which you hold in your hand aims to be an expression of this unique connection, as a simple platform for sharing rich invitations to culture, style and experiences. It is somewhat of a portrait of culture in hotels, and a hotel in its culture – and a push towards opportunities that are extraordinary moments in the making. The Lansdowne Athlete THE LANSDOWNE ATHLETE 1st century B.C. to 1st century A.D. Made of Pentelic marble, 25.6 cm.(10 in.) high The striking, just under life-sized, head of a young man, with idealised features, is turned slightly to the left. His head is crowned with closely curled luxurious hair, he has a slightly parted mouth with full lips and dimpled corners, with a rounded cleft chin below and perfect straight nose above. The facial features are finely sculpted, with a hint of musculature, cheek bone, and delicate neck folds. The naturalistically modelled head encapsulates both power, innocence and boldness, displaying the skill and virtuosity of the unknown sculptor to incredible effect. Indeed the workmanship can be likened to the great Greek sculptor, Lysippus, whose many bronze masterpieces exhibited the same finesse Marble head of an athlete, Museo Archeologico and dexterity; characteristics often admired and emulated by others. Parallels with other known pieces include; the Head of an Athlete, Museo Archeologico Nazionale, Palestrina, Inv. no 568 (cf. illustrations), as well as reflecting such iconic works as the bronze Antikythera Youth, National Museum Athens, Inv. no 13396. Pentelic marble Pentelic marble is from a quarry complex on the slopes of Mount Pentelicus, some 16 km. north of Athens. The stone is characterised by its fine grain and pure colour; the white tinged with a golden hue.

An apt description of this remarkable, luxuriant flower piece whose fantastic, iridescent forms entwine into rich, intricate layers of texture and tone. Rising from a small, central vase, Chagall’s intense and exubrant flowers almost fill the canvas, the vibrant blooms exploding from their verdant, blue/green foliage like fireworks. A delicate balance of painting and drawing, the arrangement defines and densely layers a variety of flora, contrasting luscious passages of brilliant, opaque colour with bright patches of paper, revealing the artist’s sophisticated gouache technique and power as a colourist. A lyrical painter-poet in his own right, Chagall’s vital vision of miraculous bounty is framed, but not bounded by an open window on the left with two ethereal figures delineated beneath in a pale, otherworldly predella.

  • Why the Eternal City Could Become the Next Hotspot for Luxury Hotels
FEBRUARY 2015 | PRICE £350 IN FOCUS: ROME WHY THE ETERNAL CITY COULD BECOME THE NEXT HOTSPOT FOR LUXURY HOTELS Christof Bertschi Senior Associate Sophie Perret Director www.hvs.com HVS London | 7-10 Chandos Street, Cavendish Square, London W1G 9DQ, UK ‘Why should luxury travellers pay less for a hotel in Rome than in London, Paris or New York? We have the same guests here...,’ a General Manager of a luxury hotel in Rome asked me recently during an interview. His remark poses an interesting question: why are luxury hotels in Rome not able to charge similar rates as those in London or Paris, when they supposedly attract a similar clientele? A comparison with other European gateway cities illustrates that the business mix of the hotels in Rome is actually slightly different to that of London and Paris. Whilst the latter are not only tourism hot spots but also global business hubs, Rome’s client mix is more leisure and government focused. Although Rome is the political centre of Italy and benefits from demand generated from embassy and government-related events, Italy’s business powerhouse remains in the north in the area around Milan. As a must-see destination for every leisure traveller, Rome enjoys high popularity, but the city does not have the same status and perception as a luxury shopping and lifestyle destination such as London, Paris, Milan, Venice or the French Riviera. Additionally, supply related factors, such as underinvestment and a lower number of international luxury hotel brands, have so far prevented the Rome luxury hotel market from reaching comparable room rates with these other destinations.

The Independent Magazine September 2003 p. 6-10 Foreign bodies Think Nineties grunge-chic, and you’re probably thinking of a Juergen Teller Image. But, as the photographer tells Sebastian Smee, while he’s still fascinated with the wilder shores of fashion, his work is moving ever closer to home. Portrait by Gautier Deblonde THIS ONE will take some explaining. The photographer Juergen Teller pauses for a good 10 seconds, then ruffles his hair. I have asked about the circumstances that gave rise to the somewhat surreal image you see above. The sprouting flora, I have already learnt, is not an overgrown hedge: it’s a resplendent version of the artist Jeff Koons’s most famous work. Puppy. Nor is that a discarded Barbie doll straddling one of its ears: it’s the American supermodel Stephanie Seymour. This, as it happens, is Seymour’s place in Connecticut: her freshly mown lawn, her Puppy, and — not far out of shot — her 100 horses, her two swimming pools, her world- class collection of haute couture, her collection of late 20th-century art... “I guess I met Stephanie around ‘94,” begins Teller. We are on the ground floor of his studio and home in London’s Ladbroke Grove. A table in the middle of the room is piled with prints of photographs. There is a scale model of a gallery on the floor, which Teller and his assistants are using to plan the hanging of his September exhibition at Milton Keynes Gallery; at the far end of the room is a doorway and stairs leading up (to his studio) and down (to his living quarters).

  • Beyond the Existing Readings of Marc Chagall's Crucifixion Paintings
Resistance, Resurrection, Liberation: Beyond the Existing Readings of Marc Chagall’s Crucifixion Paintings A thesis submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Art in Art History in the Department of the School of Art of the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP) by Jennifer Horvath March 10, 2015 B.S. University of Virginia May, 1993 Committee Chair: Kimberly Paice, Ph.D. Abstract This study deals with a small body of crucifixion scenes that were rendered by the well- known Russian and Jewish Expressionist artist Marc Chagall (1887-1985). It closely reads these works, made between 1937 and 1952 when Chagall lived in exile in France and the United States. Extensive scholarship and The Jewish Museum’s exhibition Chagall: Love, War, and Exile (2013-14), have emphasized ways that these paintings speak to the then-current tragedies and suffering of Jews associated with the Holocaust. This study builds on this established research. Yet, it offers a nuanced reading of the iconographical and compositional strategies that Chagall uses. Here, the lyrical-expressionist style and dream-like spatial qualities of his early modernist works infuses his painted crucifixions with the condition of exile. By emphasizing the circulation of the affects of love and hate through a network of signs, Chagall ties the theme of the crucifixion to a life of perpetual exile and to the sense of not belonging that goes with such a life. As explained in the study, Chagall’s crucifixion scenes relate as much to the suffering of humanity and Jews in the Holocaust as to the hoped-for liberation and subsequent failed promises of the Russian Revolution, to Chagall’s childhood in the Pale of Settlement, and to his lifelong experience of exile and desire to find a place in the world.
