Is there still a spiritual dimension underpinning the demands of art? In order to reflect on these and other questions MAXXI, the National Museum of XXI Century Arts, is bringing together a number of leading figures from the contemporary art scene in the major group show on the spiritual matter of art, strongly supported by the President of the Fondazione MAXXI Giovanna Melandri and curated by Bartolomeo Pietromarchi (from 17 October 2019 to 8 March 2020). ART 2311: Art and Architecture in Rome Fall 2016 A Days (Mondays and Wednesdays), 11:30am-1:00pm Aula Magna (plus site visits on some Wednesday afternoons) COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course gives students the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the development of the city of Rome through a study of its art, architecture and urban transformation. It focuses on the major artistic and architectural movements occurring primarily in Italy (as well as their Greek antecedents) from roughly the 8th century BCE to the 20th century CE. In the study of each period we will strive to understand Rome’s artistic and architectural works within the contexts in which they were created. Our study of art, architecture and urban planning will therefore take into account the historical, political, social, religious and cultural contexts of the patrons, artists and viewers. Particular emphasis will be placed on ancient Greece and Rome, early Christianity, the Renaissance and the Baroque periods. We will also explore the reuse, borrowing and revival of ancient artistic and architectural themes in later periods. Italian Culture Newsletter Number 22 A Virtual Train Journey along the Mare Ligure from Ventimiglia to Rome. Marie and I have made this journey on a number of occasions. In doing so we have either made the journey in a single day albeit with a change of train, usually at Genova. On other occasions, we have spent an evening or even a few days at Genova and/or at Livorno or Pisa. The journey described will involve more stops on the way but could be more interesting on that account. The trip begins in Ventimiglia where we stayed overnight on our last day of our last holiday in Italy. This had been occasioned by the French railway strike which prevented any trains from running from Ventimiglia to Nice on the day of our arrival from Rome into the city at the Italian- French border in Liguria. Our first visit to Ventimiglia was in 2006 when some Italian friends from Cuneo, due north of Ventimiglia, in Piemonte, met us at the rail station in Ventimiglia to take us for a short stay at their apartment in Nice. On that occasion we didn’t see much of the city except for part of the old medieval town, which now mostly is the home of many of the southerners from Naples, Calabria and Sicily who moved north seeking employment after WWII. The old town is perched high above the new city with its long sea-front promenade and railway station. Ventimiglia is the ancient Albium Intemelium, the capital of the Intemelii, a Ligurian tribe which long resisted the Romans, until in 115 BC it was forced to submit to Marcus Aemilius Scaurus. -

Celui sur la gauche des marches de Michelange est le Nouveau Palais, qui abrite l'une des plus importantes collections de sculptures d'Europe. Il fut dessiné par Michelange et devint le premier musée public en 1734 sur l'ordre du pape Clément XII. L'autre palais, le Conservatori, abrite d'importantes peintures by Anthony Majanlahti comme St Jean Baptiste de Caravaggio et des oeuvres de titian, veronese, Rubens et Tintoretto. Une sculpture d'un énorme pied se trouve dans la cours, et faisait autrefois partie d'une statue de l'empereur Constantin. I). The monumental palace stretches for eighty ,five metres along the Western flank of the piazza from the Southern corner coward the Northern end. The exceptionally long fapde is organised into a symmetrical sequence of bays with a projecting central section and is buttressed, at the North end, by a distinct fapde with a large serliana win, dow (an arch with crabeaced sides). The exterior boasts a profusion of ornament that enlivens the surface and punctuates the horizontality of the building. Through sheer scale and abundance of form, the Palazzo Pamphilj bespeaks grandeur and authority. Architecture serves the rhetorical functions of communication and persuasion. In the early modem period (ca. 1500-1800), palaces in particular became synonymous with the statm of their owners. Today, the Palazzo Pamphilj houses the Embassy of Brazil in Rome, but until the government ofBrazil purchased the palace in 1960, it had belonged to the Pamphilj family. -
