Anthropozoologica 56 (5): 71-85. https://doi.org/10.5252/anthropozoologica2021v56a5. http://anthropozoologica.com/56/5 ABSTRACT In northern Italy’s Po Plain, Etruscan cities flourished during the Archaic period c( . 6th-4th centuries BC), thanks to an organized and dynamic commercial network that linked these centres with Italy, Europe, and the Mediterranean. This new urban network had a significant impact on the territory it occupied, and zooarchaeological studies document the emergence of a new agricultural strategy and livestock improvement. While there is ample evidence for how these Etruscan communities shaped their urban environments and agricultural hinterland, their relationship with wild resources – outside of prestige hunting – is poorly understood. As a result of taphonomic and recovery biases, zooarchaeological as- semblages representing small wild taxa like fish and birds are rare. In this context, the fish bone as- semblage from the Archaic harbour town of Forcello offers an exceptional opportunity to investigate KEY WORDS wild resource exploitation in an urban context. Here we present an initial analysis of the ichthyological Iron Age, Etruscan, assemblage and place results in their broader zooarchaeological and cultural context. Results suggest a subsistence, fishing strategy that privileged large, line-caught fish, with a significant degree of continuity in species palaeoeconomy, representation over pre- and proto-history. While the amount of food furnished by fishing was minimal biodiversity, Po Plain, compared to that from domestic livestock, wild foods including fish were the main source of diversity in fluvial environments. the diet: a role which may have influenced their relatively greater visibility in Etruscan ritual practices. RÉSUMÉ Alimentation sauvage en milieu urbain : consommation de poissons d'eau douce dans la ville archaïque de Forcello (Italie du Nord). Les villes étrusques de la plaine du Pô, au nord de l'Italie, ont prospéré pendant la période archaïque (c. vie-ive siècles av. J.-C.) grâce à un réseau commercial organisé et dynamique qui les reliait à l'Italie, l'Europe et la Méditerranée. Ce nouveau réseau urbain a eu une grande influence sur le territoire qu'il occupait et des études zooarchéologiques démontrent l'émergence d'une nouvelle stratégie agricole ainsi que l'amélioration de l'élevage.     Italian Culture Newsletter Number 22 A Virtual Train Journey along the Mare Ligure from Ventimiglia to Rome. Marie and I have made this journey on a number of occasions. In doing so we have either made the journey in a single day albeit with a change of train, usually at Genova. On other occasions, we have spent an evening or even a few days at Genova and/or at Livorno or Pisa. The journey described will involve more stops on the way but could be more interesting on that account. The trip begins in Ventimiglia where we stayed overnight on our last day of our last holiday in Italy. This had been occasioned by the French railway strike which prevented any trains from running from Ventimiglia to Nice on the day of our arrival from Rome into the city at the Italian- French border in Liguria. Our first visit to Ventimiglia was in 2006 when some Italian friends from Cuneo, due north of Ventimiglia, in Piemonte, met us at the rail station in Ventimiglia to take us for a short stay at their apartment in Nice. On that occasion we didn’t see much of the city except for part of the old medieval town, which now mostly is the home of many of the southerners from Naples, Calabria and Sicily who moved north seeking employment after WWII. The old town is perched high above the new city with its long sea-front promenade and railway station. Ventimiglia is the ancient Albium Intemelium, the capital of the Intemelii, a Ligurian tribe which long resisted the Romans, until in 115 BC it was forced to submit to Marcus Aemilius Scaurus.

    Women in Etruscan Tomb Painting By Sophie Isabelle Stefanovich A research essay submitted to the Graduate Program in Classics in conformity with the requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada September, 2018 Copyright © Sophie Isabelle Stefanovich, 2018 Stefanovich i Abstract Previous scholarship on women in Etruscan tomb painting has grounded its conclusion on a number of select, well distinguished tombs that have been used to support or disprove the claim that women held a prominent position in Etruscan society. This research paper aims to expand the literature by compiling an extensive catalogue of tomb paintings at the Etruscan site of Tarquinia, to examine the representation and iconography of women between the sixth and fourth centuries BCE. Of the 135 painted tombs known in the Monterozzi necropolis of Tarquinia, there are 62 tombs that contain the depiction of women in various settings, including scenes of dance, athletics, the journey to the afterlife, and most frequently, the banquet. By analyzing the 24 tombs that contain scenes of the banquet where women are present, through their positioning, attire, and iconography, it is evident that the elite women in Etruscan society played an important role in the family. In comparison to scenes of the banquet in Greek art, as well as the accounts from ancient authors who comment on the scandalous actions of Etruscan women, a different picture emerges. The women depicted on the walls of these Etruscan tombs are not entertainers or subordinate companions. Etruscan italy as seen by students Excursion participants, Volterra 2017. ENGLISH VERSION Brno 2018 Introduction The excursion to Italy was held from 29th May till 7th June 2017 and was organized by students of Department of Archaeology and Museology of Masaryk University in Brno. The main intention was to present the Etruscan landscape in its natural settings to students of Classical Archaeology and related fields of study. The excursion took place within the grant project FRMU ID-MUNI / FR / 1298/2016 (ID = 36283). This excursion completed following Classical Archaeology courses: AEB_74 (Etruscan and Central Europe) and KLBcA25 (Etruscans in the context of Ancient World - Etruscology), KLMgrA31 (Excursion) but it was considerably valuable as well for students of History and Ancient history. All students had to be active in the period of its organization in order to complete the course and get the credits. Before the field trip, they had to attend a seminar to get acquainted with each visited site and the individual essay’s topics have been shared with students. The selection of topics was based on their own interest. Students were allowed to work in smaller groups or completely independently.

We know them only from the probably biased comments of Greek and Latin writers and from the material remains of their culture, found mainly in tombs and susceptible to a bewildering range of interpretations. Etruscan bronze work is known to have been prized in Athens in the fifth century BCE, that is at the height of the Greek Classical period. At least one surviving work fully justifies this estimate – the famous She-Wolf of the Capitol. The extraordinary realism of the tense, watchful stance- ears pricked, brow furrowed, jaws snarling, hackles rising- epitomizes at tits finest and most vividly factual the unidealized, down-to-earth quality of Etruscan art. Chimera of Arezzo (Arezzo), early 4th century BCE, bronze This is another well-known Etruscan bronze work, discovered in the Tuscan town of Arezzo. Inscribed on its right foreleg is an inscription which has been variously read, but most recently is agreed to be TINSCVIL, showing that the bronze was a votive object dedicated to the supreme Etruscan god of day, Tin or Tinia. This is a representation of a beast from Greek mythology that had the head and body of a lion, a tail in the form of a snake, and a goat’s head protruding from its back.

    JUNO’S PEACOCK Or the Eyes have it Newsletter of the Wesleyan University Department of Classical Studies Issue 16 Summer 2011 When Argus, the hundred-eyed guard animal (and also the name of Wesleyan’s student newspaper) was killed by Hermes (Jupiter’s hit-man, and the name of Wesleyan’s alternative campus paper), some part of him survived death. His eyes were saved by Juno and set in the tail of her peacock. Argus, you lie low; the light you had in so many eyes is extinguished, And your hundred points of light are now all dark. But Juno saved the eyes, and set them in the feathers of her peacock: She filled its tail with jewels as bright as stars.
